New Jamz From Speedy Ortiz

40

Who knows what it is with me and rock music accompanied by driving female vocals.  It’s been documented multiple times on the site so I’ll save you the re-hash of my love for the genre and get to the point of sharing with you this new tune by Speedy Ortiz called “American Horror”.  It’s a straightforward rock number with the aforementioned sweet lady vocals giving us something to hang on to throughout.  Dig it.

Check out new EP, Real Hair, on February 11th via Carpark Records.

Austin Spotlight: Summer Swells

944816_682268098470608_177123419_nOur apologies to those in Austin who knew about Summer Swells before we did.  This shit happens sometimes man.  With that out of the way, check out this track from the local boys called “House on the Edge of a Hill”.  To me, the band combines this crazy mixture of The Walkmen’s best guitar melodies with modern country twang.  Sounds like Austin to me.  If you’re a fan of the tune, check out more from these guys on their bandcamp page with recent EP Old Gold

Rock Out with Cheatahs

995807_542357282467041_1095715952_nThis tune, “Get Tight”, from UK based band Cheatahs has struck a chord with me today and I wanted to share it with you guys.  It’s a great washed out rock tune from a band prepping their debut release for late winter times.  I’m expecting great things from these guys in the future.

The band’s new self-titled debut will be available on February 11th via Wichita Recordings.

New Music from Hospitality

hospitalityWhat a difference an album can make!  The first effort from Hospitality was a joy, filled with catchy folk-influenced tunes that you could sing whilst still feeling a bit introspective.  But, as evidenced by their latest tune, which is slated to be on their new record, Trouble, they’ve taken things into a more sinister place, at least in so far as the mood created.  I also think their sound has expanded, filling out some of the empty space that may have been present on their first effort. This tune definitely has me intrigued, wondering if they can maintain their exuberance while going darker (you can hear another tune HERE).  I guess we’ll all find out when Merge releases the album on January 28th.

We Like The Men

The MenYeah we like The Men so let’s just move on here.  This new track was floating around the interwebs quite a bit yesterday, and we haven’t had the time to get to it until now.  We apologize for our tardiness, but I think you’d agree that the track is just too good to not post.  Of course it rocks, it rolls, and it leaves us desperate to hear more from the new album.

Pick up new album, Tomorrow’s Hits, on March 4th via Sacred Bones.

Coachella 2014 Lineup

Coachella 2014I am sure all of you have posted this on Facebook, but I figured we need to add it here just in case someone can’t find the pic later on…

Coachella is again using the two weekend format and will feature Outkast, Muse and Arcade Fire as headliners. I get Outkast and Arcade Fire, but please stop booking Muse at every festival. Please. It has to stop. I walk out when I hear Muse; it is my “you’re drunk, go home” alert. Or maybe that is why they are booked as headliners. “Hope you had fun, this is your queue to leave and rest up for tomorrow.” So many lasers. So many.

The festival is getting spendy, passes are $375 and $435 with daily shuttle service. Yikes. Weekend One only has the passes with shuttle service available. VIP will run you $799 with $150 more for parking.

Notables for me on the lineup, as with most festivals, are further down the list: Flume, Jagwar Ma, Dum Dum Girls, Wye Oak, Holy Ghost!, Blood Orange, Mogwai, Chvrches, STRFKR, Daughter, Poolside, Surfer Blood. Mid-levels I’d be stoked on are Bryan Ferry, The Knife, Pet Shop Boys, Beck, Neutral Milk, Motorhead and Little Dragon. You going to the desert? You wearing flip-flops?

CONTEST: Abram Shook Sun Marquee Vinyl Giveaway!!!

Abram.Shook.1.300As long time supporters of Abram Shook, we’re overly excited about the release of his new album, and you should be too! Sun Marquee has already shown its promised with a few incredible singles (which you can stream below), but we’ve got a steal for you! For the price of a simple comment, you can get your hands on a vinyl copy of the record, courtesy of Western Vinyl (and us). I figure since it’s an Austin artist, we should make you leave a comment about the best place in Austin to get a taco.  What’s your favorite place? Comment, and it could win you a free LP!

But, if you’re not able to win, and you live in the Austin area, you’ll have a chance to get your hands on a copy during his release show on January 24th at the Mohawk.  Tickets are $6, and opening acts Royal Forest and Good Field aren’t too shabby either.  Stream the tracks and leave a comment. Contest ends Monday at 11:59 PM.

Power Pop Gem from Spirit Kid

spiritkid Spirit Kid is the working moniker of Boston’s Emeen Zarookian, who gets a little help from his friends (Bent Shapes & Babydriver) on his forthcoming release, Is Happening.  Those of you in need of a powerful burst of pop will definitely find yourselves in love with his first big single, “Slow It Down.” In just under three minutes, the song pushes hooks and energy right down your throat, making it nearly impossible to ignore the joyous possibilities that await us all with his release.  You can grab your copy of the album when it sees a national release on March 18th.
