Hope You Didn’t Forget Architecture in Helsinki

archIt’s been awhile since we last heard from Aussie’s Architecture in Helsinki, but good things come to those who wait.  In the last few days, the band has popped their head up with a catchy new single that should definitely make the end of your Wednesday a good one.  I figured since we’re all taking the day off to celebrate 4th of July festivities tomorrow, we’d leave you with this one last track to get you smiling on your way out the door.  This is the band’s latest, but no word yet on when a full-length will come your way…we’ll keep you posted as news comes our way.

Brand New Music from Comet Gain

CometGain2Make no mistake about it, Comet Gain is one of my Top 5 bands of all time.  The poetry, the song construction, the style and the diversity consistently surprise and entertain.  News came just recently that they are working on a 7″ for WIAIWYA (via my man Howard), which is always exciting as you never know when the group is going to pop up with something new.  I’m pretty sure that the rest of my day is going to be spent playing this tune over and over.  If you’ve not followed this band before, and this song catches your ear, please go check out the back catalogue of one of the most overlooked bands in the world.

Win Tickets to see the Whalers @ the Belmont (7.6)

whalersNo! This is not Bob Marley’s Wailers, but the great Austin act, the Whalers.  They’re celebrating the release of their new single by throwing a great show over at the Belmont this Saturday night.  What’s even better, they’re letting us give away a pair of tickets to the show!  If you’re not convinced yet, check out the incredible Austin talent supporting them: Tiger Waves, The Baker Family and Jesse Woods.  I’m pretty sure anyone with good tastes will want to make their way out.  All you have to do is leave a comment with your 4th of July plans, and I’ll pick a winner.  Our contest will close at 5 PM on Friday, July 5th. Good luck….and if you don’t win, you can still go check out great Austin music.

Start The Party With Cold Blood Club

Sometimes, you just want to be happy and get your groove on. Seems the Cold Blood Club is here to provide you with some vibes to vibe to. The track streaming below is called “Goodbye To All That” and it is thick with claps, breaks, builds and jangly guitar goodness needed to start a party. It has a Shout Out Louds feel to it with transitions into brit-pop happy pants jams.

Did any of our New York friends catch the show at Bowery Electric last night? Give me deets. Seems this track is made for the stage…

Austin Spotlight: Big Bill

0001548526_20As previously mentioned, we’ve been striving hard to better represent this great city we live in with spotlights on some of our favorite up and coming musicians. Today I’m bringing you all a band called Big Bill that could be the newest and freshest bands we’ve over posted about in the Austin scene. These guys create would I would call quirky and weird punk rock music similar to maybe Terry Malts or No Bunny if those guys were even more weird. I find it irresistible. Below you can check out new song “Free Dumb” which appears on the bands latest and only release A Hard Days Bill (EP). If you like what you hear, you can download that entire EP for free at a name your own price deal.

Crowdsourcing The Scene – Hardly Sound

Hardly Sound is trying to document things going on in Texas, highlighting and profiling musicians and telling some stories. Second best music show on PBS? Perhaps. It is well shot and has featured a few ATH favorites already like The Bad Lovers and Royal Forest. Support the local projects, right?

This project is a labor of love, self-funded for the most part. Randy Reynolds and Christopher Kim want to step up their game this season and are looking for a little help. Head here to check out the options for supporting, including one very cool t-shirt design thumbnailed as the story pic.

Summer Rock with The Denzels

denzelsI’ve posted on the Denzels, so it only seems fitting that I’m running their new single.  Almost from the get-go you can feel the energy, as they blast off into a quick-paced jam that speeds  through in less than 2.5 minutes.  The vocals have a nice bit of grainy darkness to them, which really shows that you can blend the line between lo-fo garage rock and pop sensibility; this is definitely the rock of the future.  As of now, the band’s working on new material after last years Easy Tiger EP. We’ll keep you posted as more news comes our way.

Obits Return and Rock Out

ObitsWe’re a little late on this new jam from Obits that dropped yesterday, but we love the band too much to pass on posting new tunes just because we might be a bit tardy.  So with that out of the way, here’s the new power rockin’ number from Obits called “Taste the Diff”.  Of course it’s about what you’d expect to hear from these veterans, it’s a jam with screeching vocals and a no BS attitude approach to songwriting.  We can all get behind that right?

A new album entitled Bed & Bugs will drop on September 10th via Sub Pop Records.

Austin Spotlight: Friendly Savages

1016657_480126135399015_1655698993_nWe ran a nice little punk rock jam this morning, so I wanted to bring you all something from the opposite direction, Austin’s Friendly Savages. The group dropped their album, O, Joshua, a few months back, and it’s an album begging for a larger audience.  On this track, I like the way the structure unfolds, opening slowly then moving to a full folk sound, but they have a nice little breakdown near the end of the track that should surprise you.  Those of you looking about for a new folk-rock act might have just found exactly what you were looking for today, and in the very least, you’ve got a great song to enjoy today.
