Fun Fest Interviews: We Were Promised Jetpacks

Man it seems like Fun Fest was ages ago at this point and we’ve been lagging just a bit behind on our post festival coverage as far as interviews go.  It probably has a lot to do with the complete lack of experience I have with video editing software…  So yes, the cat is out of the bag, ATH decided to do some video interviews over the festival weekend for the very first time and we’re hoping you’ll enjoy this new component of the site.  In the future, we’re hoping to begin incorporating more and more video with our interviews, lost in austin series, and more general videos featuring new music.  We’re like so 2011 now. Without further ado, follow the jump for our Fun Fest VIDEO interview with Sean and Mike from We Were Promised Jetpacks.

New Track from RACES

Frenchkiss Records has a pretty solid track record with me, especially since the label’s run by some of the bros from Les Savy Fav.  They just released a new EP yesterday from LA band RACES.  The EP is titled Big Broom EP, and I’ve really been enjoying this track here.  I don’t know why, but for some reason the vocal performance sort of gives me this Walkmen feel, but that’s also part of the overall song structure true.  Boiled down, it’s pretty much straight forward indie rock, which in and of itself is refreshing, since no one seems to be kicking it old school anymore. Give it a listen and enjoy your afternoon folks.

More New Music from Hospitality

I can’t tell you how excited we are for this Hospitality record.  When we first run their track “Friends of Friends,” RayRay and I were so excited, that we both wanted to post it, almost letting us post it twice.  So yesterday when Stereogum ran the second single from the group’s upcomingself-titled album, I got super stoked all over again.  Merge Records is going to put it out on January 31st, and it just can’t get here soon enough.  This band is clever and whimsical, but there’s definitely a lush pop quality to the music they’re creating.   It’s just a simple formula, but the perfect execution makes it perfect for what any music listener looks for in a hit. Try the new track out.

Show Preview: Holy Ghost! @ The Parish (11/17)

Location The Parish
Doors 900p
Tickets $15 @ Frontgate

DJ duo Holy Ghost! are stopping into the Parish on Thursday night and I know at least one ATH staffer who is peeing his pants in anticipation.  As previously reported, the band usually travels with a band so things should be a bit more interesting than just your everyday DJ set.  Support for the evening is provided by New York based groups Eli Escobar and Jessica 6.  Power.

New Music From PJ Bond

Here’s a cool new track called “I’m In a Bad Way” from New Jersey based PJ Bond.  I honestly don’t have a whole lot to say about it other than it reminds me a bit of Jeff Tweedy meets Jim James, and that is of course a positive.  The song is said to possibly be on a new LP out in 2012 but this has yet to be confirmed.  I’d suggest spinning this one right before bed on one of these rainy days we’ve been having recently.

Fresh Punk Rock from Throwing Up

Our good friend Kevin is legit.  Not only does he run What’s Your Rupture and Krazy Punx, but he always manages to send me these great tracks when I’m feeling like a sad bastard.  That’s not at all what he’s got on his plate when he releases a new 7″ titled Mother Knows Best by UK punks Throwing Up.  Immediately it’s brash and abrasive, banging away furiously at your ears.  All of a sudden, the vocals kick in, and you’re hooked on the female vocals, giving it a bit of jubilance along with lo-fi ferocity.  Turn it up and let it blast…then grab it from What’s Your Rupture on November 28th.

New Music from Frank Smith

Let’s get things straight: Frank Smith is not one man, it’s a band, and one of Austin’s brighter rising stars (though they’ve been about for some time).  While the official release of their new album, Before You Were Born, won’t hit until 2012, the band is slowly unleashing teaser tracks to build our anticipation.  This first track, which also has an accompanying VIDEO, is titled “Monsters.”  It begins with sort of a mellow dip into the autumnal/wintery quality accustomed to most indie folk, but as the chorus bursts, you’ll realize exactly why we think so highly of the group.  It’s just a blissful cascade of melody, placed perfectly in the song, creating a wonderful musical moment we hope you’ll enjoy.

Show Preview: Real Estate @ the Parish (11/16)

Date Wednesday, Nov. 16th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $13 from Frontgate

I have no idea how this show hasn’t sold out as of Monday night.  Opening the night is Big Troubles, who’ve released their Romantic Comedy just recently, and it’s done fairly well with the fans, not to mention this writer.  That alone warrants attendance, yet the big headliner is Real Estate. These kids have pretty much dominated the news headlines all over the Internet since their inception, and the band’s October release of Days, got all sorts of praise.  This is the type of show people dream about, so go on and get yourself a ticket.  Oh, and to top it off, it all gets played through the amazing sound of the Parish; now if I could only get them to lower their beer prices!

Straight Power Pop from The Marvelous Darlings (Ben from Fucked Up)

Most people associate Ben Cook with Fucked Up and the band’s hardcore roots, but his side project Marvelous Darlings takes on a different light altogether.  Throughout the last several years the band has released various singles and are now set to release a compilation of sorts combining all the music from those years.  The collection is titled Single Life and will be out on November 22nd via Deranged Records.  We’ve got the first track here to offer you, and it’s a solid little boogie through and through.  Once those lyrics kick in, you can definitely get ahold of the pop aspect.  With Fucked Up‘s future uncertain, I have a feeling we’ll see more from the band coming up.
