It’s Friday, and the release schedule has picked up around these parts, and a couple of my favorite artists are dropping new LPs today. It’s definitely not an end-all-be-all list, but just wanted to give you something worth jamming to all day long. No need to get long-winded here, just offering advice for Friday.

Announcing the Annual SOTO vs ATH SXSW Show

Two long running music sites based in Austin unite again at this year’s SXSW to kick off the week of shows over at Hotel Vegas. You guessed it! It’s us (ATH) vs Side One Track One! This is our annual event, where we try to reach as deep into the Austin scene as we can to bring folks visiting, as well as our locals, a really great show that spreads across the scene. We’ll be holding it down across three stages, mixing all your favorite genres into the party mix. And, thanks to Hotel Vegas/Volstead Lounge, the whole thing is absolutely free! New Slammer From Dreamwave

After absolutely tearing up things with new music in 2022 and then relentless touring last year, Bristol based Dreamwave really churned up some totally deserving buzz. This year looks to be full of more straight jams from the band, as evidenced by this raucous new single called “Mindcave.” For me, I dig it when a band doesn’t mess about and just gets right into the power and energy. No fussing about here. Stay tuned as this is surely just the first of more to come in 2024.

Billy Bonbon Share Paradise Video

Somedays you wake up and you just need a song to run along side you, something to carry you to the next level; I definitely needed Billy Bonbon today, as I crawl out of a Thursday funk. This one caught me instantly, playing that sort of surf meets indiepop vibe, using quick rushing guitar lines to introduce the track; I loved the bubbly nature that just had my toes tapping beneath my desk. When the vocals join the fray, they’re coated a bit, giving them that sort of misty wash that alludes to a dreamier tendency in the group’s songwriting. Just watch the video, as they’re definitely embracing the joy in this tune, and I hope you do too!

Baby Blue Drop Human Race Single

I loved the first track from the forthcoming Baby Blue LP, and now there’s another one that feels like a stoned bit of sunny pop. You can hear the sun shining through the structure of the guitar lines, but the steadied beat of the drums keep the track locked into this sedated pace. That crafted weariness seems to perfectly connect with Rhea Caldwell’s lyrics as she seems exhausted by the existence of the human race…and sadly that’s a feeling a lot of us align with, so you find yourself sinking into the song as it chugs along. They’ll be releasing Of My Window via Lost and Lonesome on April 17th.

System Exclusive Share Click Video

I’m a huge sucker for an easy hit, but that’s not what you get when you turn on a System Exclusive tune, like their latest, “Click.” Sputtering electronics and crawling vocals bring you into the track, waiting for the guitars to glide underneath the mix, met by drums and an electronic wash. Ari B’s vocal performance remind me of an early Karen O when she felt super dangerous, yet you can’t pull yourself away here. Throughout, the song moves in and out of its organic nature, letting tension build as it plays with the negative space behind Ari’s voice, always rolling in with this pulsing groove. Really stoked on this tune. Click is out on Mt. St. Mtn.and Le Cepe Records on May 17th, with a big Spring tour working through the US.

Bolis Pupul Shares Ma Tau Wai Road Single

For an album centered around family, it makes perfect sense that Bolis Pupul gives his sister an appearance on his latest single from the record dedicated to his mother. This go round, the groove carries a natural bounce to it, almost springy. That’s all juxtaposed with Salah Pupul’s voice, which has this bedroom pop dreaminess to it, almost crafting like a more pop-oriented version of a Fever Ray tune…which I don’t mind one bit. There’s lot of samples that also feel like they naturally fit into the scenery of the video, furthering Bolis storytelling in the album, which can sometimes be difficult in this genre. Letter to Yu is out on Mach 8th via DeeWee.

Pop Hit From Royal Otis

As previously mentioned, that indie pop label seems to be thrown around a lot these days, and often the song is either a big pop start hit, or lacking an pop sensibility whatsoever. This new single called “Foam” from Syndey stalwarts Royal Otis somehow lands perfectly in that indie pop zone with subtle hooks and what can only be called an Aussie sounding beat. It’s looking like this may be the year of a return for true indie pop so get your ass ready for some awkward dance floors. Dig it.

ATX Spotlight: Grackles Share Top of the World

Austin based band Grackles is a conglomerate of sorts featuring an astounding eight member group all of various big name projects in and outside of town. The ATX super group features members who have toured with the likes of The Chicks, backed up Ben Harper and even had involvement with some of our favorite local indie bands like Megafauna. All of that star power combines beautifully on this twangy and southern soaked new single called “Top of the World,” which features guest vocals from Kat Edmonson. I think you’ll find it a lovely addition to our ever growing Austin alt-country scene.

Grackles have also announced an Austin Record release show on February 24th at The Pershing. Tickets and more info can be found HERE. See ya there!

Sheer Mag Share Eat It and Beat It Video

For years folks praised Sheer Mag, and with their signing to Third Man for their third LP, we’re expecting waves of adoration to wash ashore. For my two cents, I love the latest single, particularly the growl of the guitars, a missing link to that period of early American punk circa the New York Dolls. Tina Halladay has this bit of brattiness to her vocals too, adding that feeling of a band really pushing back against any and all expectations; they don’t give a damn what you think, they just came to lay down some rock n’ roll. But, they needn’t worry, with songs like this folks are going to be all over Playing Favorites; it drops on March 1st.
