Mall Girl Share New Jam

When we think about post-emo jams, Oslo is not typically the first place to come to mind. All that may change though with the sounds of Norwegian outfit Mall Girl, and tunes like this new one called “Emo Shred.” Shocker, the title perfectly conveys what you’re going to get from the song with its bright, intricate guitar parts and dramatic, emotional drops. It bangs, for real.

Mall Girl has three more songs currently streaming on bandcamp from their upcoming new album entitled Pure Love. That one is out on January 26th.

New Music from Camille Benatre

I was checking in on one of my favorite French labels, Hidden Bay, seeing what they had coming out, as I knew there were a few releases in their 2024 like Petit Bureau and Radical Kitten, but I had no idea about this stunning Camille Benatre! I have no idea what the lyrics are detailing, but the natural playfulness and joy of this single is absolutely undeniable. You can fee the rolling drums and guitar lines tossing and tumbling you along with the natural groove. Benatre’s voice is subdued and charming, only furthered by absolute failure to understand French. Whether you be a Francophile or just a lover of great pop, keep an eye out for Dommage, as it already sounds like a winner; drops in March!

Cordelia Gartside Shares December Single

There’s something about Cordelia Gartside‘s new single that definitely evokes the feeling of “December.” For many of us, the creeping in of wintery winds aligns with the quieted whisper of her voice, seeping through your pores and filling your body with warmth. Guitars add to that quieted nature, seemingly tip-toeing through your speakers, attempting to fill the room with their delicate notes as they build tension. Still, they pull back, letting us wrestle with the song’s solitude as we patiently wait to hear what the UK artists will drop next!

Check Out the Latest Harmless Tune

I’ve been covering Nacho Cano’s work for a really long time on this site, so it only seems fitting that I jump back in on this track he dropped just before the New Year under his Harmless moniker. For me, there’s something entirely enchanting about the vocal performance; it has this timelessness that reminds me of listening to 50s rock n’ roll with my mom as a kid. Nacho’s production lets the melody hang out there perfectly, waiting for the musical elements to dive right in and make you swoon; the guitars hang right behind his voice, sparkling and adding this beautiful shimmer. I’m a sucker for this, and based on the slew of singles he’s been dropping, I’m hoping for a new LP in the new year.

CR&M Share Mondegreen

A lot of folks usually run the New Year with resolutions and lists of goals; I think on my end, I tend to write about my feelings and shit, which usually requires a good solid score. Today, I’ve been jamming this trippy bit of post-rock from CR&M. Admittedly, I don’t know much about the band, as they don’t even have a site or the like, but this track reminds me of that sort of atmospheric post rock meets IDM style popularized by the likes of Boards of Canada and such. It allows plenty of space for your brain to roam and wonder, yet it’s tightly wound, so you can feel the natural push and pull of tension that runs throughout. New year, new me, new song.

Royal Oakie Shares Greatest Hits of 2023

We covered a lot of ground in 2023, or so I like to think. And, while we were able to look back with our end of year coverage, Oakland label Royal Oakie opted to go their own way by dropping a Greatest Hits of 2023 collection, which features this really solid tune from Michael James Tapscott (among others like Half Stack and Jeff Moller). Listening, you’ll hear the rolling hills of Texas, with the twisting and turning of the guitars riding through backroads; Tapscott’s vocals have a friendly warmth too, carrying that fireside chat aura that makes everyone feel welcome. It’s a great way to hear what the label did last year, and keep an eye out for what they’ve got coming in 2024!

Aisha Burns Covers Chris Isaak

I shit you not; I received four different emails from four different projects, all of which were covering Chris Isaak, and all of them covering “Wicked Game.” But, I’m only running this Aisha Burns cover because a) she’s always been kind to us at ATH b) it’s being released by Western Vinyl, who have also shared a lot of kindnesses over the years c) Aisha’s voice almost betters Isaak’s (yeah, I said it). Burns, in the press release, looks at the spell of unrequited love in terms of what its like to be both an artist and an African-American woman living in the United States, drawn to art and humanity despite those things not being reciprocated. Well, played Aisha!

Luma Fade Share Spring Sobriety

There are still a few bands left dropping tunes for the world to enjoy up until the Holiday weekend, and I’m grateful Luma Fade saved this one before they drop their Lunar Decay album. This is one of those perfect wintery numbers, hanging on to some definite solemnity with the weight of the vocals. Now, that doesn’t mean there’s not this delicious melody lurking inside, but rather that you can feel the drift of the song blowing through the space left by the vocal notes, like a gust of wind blowing your hat off as snows roll into town. I loved the pacing too, perfectly resting in this moment that allows you pause and reflect as we look towards a new year. A solid way to get you ready for the release of their LP, dropping this Friday!

Last Week’s Jams (12.11 – 12.15)

Unfortunately, this is probably the last of Last Week’s Jams for 2023. Not because I don’t want to write about new tunes, but because, for some reason, folks just stop putting out music and let the world dwindle to a compilation of year-end lists. But, last week we still had tons of tunes to cover, with a whole lot of Austin represented. We revisited Fantastic Purple Spots, plus had brand new stuff from Big Bill, the Infinites and Fading Yellow. Got a bonus with one more Maureens track, which might be my favorite on their latest LP, and a fresh Club 8 hit that came out of nowhere. If you’re just looking for a playlist of new music, why not start here.

Solbore Shares New Track ft. Devin Yu

Clearly I’m in the mood for drifting pop music, like this track from Solbore. He’s crafted this really intimate moment that just allows the song to exist, sort of hanging in its own permanence. But, the track steps up a level when Devin Yu of Delta Sleep enters the pictures, calmly and coolly letting his voice fit in between the lines; those vocals have this sort of relaxed resonance that furthers the vibe, deepening the tune’s title, “Possibility Of.” Where can the song go? Where can it take you? Where can we go? If you want the answer, then stream below! It appears on the album, Never Alone, Often Lonely, out next year.
