One More Single from A Beacon School

In case you weren’t aware, and I’m definitely invested in the release of the new LP from A Beacon School, as I’ve managed to cover almost every new tune leading up to Friday’s release of yoyo. In the end, that means little, as the journey we’re being taken on finds me grinning as the songs reverberate in my cranium. For some reason, there’s this one Aphex Twin track employing a rapid motorik beat, similar to the one here, though A Beacon School is employing a less metallic version, which allows more of this shadowy shimmer on the edge of the song that brings you a nice melodic sampler platter. It’s been a record that’s allowed me to lose myself in the moment, whilst still feeling the humanity in the craft. Yoyo is out Friday via Grind Select.

Juicebumps Share Edging in Heaven

If you’re looking towards a Friday purchase, might I suggest checking out the new LP from Juicebumps. On this last track, the band seem to be exploring the artier side of post-punk, with an edge cutting into the craft via sharp guitars sputtering atop spoken lyrical lines that are traded back and forth between vocalists. It feels frantic and teasingly playful, particularly when the horns slide in to match up with the giggling bass groove. JUMBO is dropping this Friday via Rocks in Your Head Record, and if it gets executed as thoughtfully in step as this one, we’re going to have a whole lotta fun.

Wurld Series Drop Rearing Wesley Single

In the PR for this latest Wurld Series, this new single is referred to as an “earthen ear wyrm,” and its definitely playing into that concept, particularly in the opening two minutes of the track. To me, it feels as if you’re walking through a Renaissance Fair as a merry band of revelers does their best to cover their favorite Clientele songs. The psychedelic guitar churning atop the primal rolling drums give off this hallucinatory quality that’s definitely taking you off into some spiritual landscape that’s filled with the bewilderment present in the video below. Stick around for the incendiary guitars at the 2 minute mark. The Giant’s Lawn is out November 17th via Meritorio and Melted Ice Cream.

Groovy New Tune From Jesse Kivel

While Nathan was holding down the fort for us and keeping it straight real, I of course missed a few hits over the last week. One such jam, comes by way of the Maine based artist Jesse Kivel and his new single “Overgrown Ocean.” This think packs a big punch of soul with a heavy groove paired with some slight hints of twang and delicate pop. It’s a jam.

This track is part of a new album entitled Death at Party Rock due out on November 11th via New Feelings. Pre-orders are live now.

Jared Leibowich of the Zoltars Announces New LP

If you read our site, you surely know the name Jared Leibowich; he’s long been one of our favorite songwriters from the Austin area (though he’s recently moved), working with the Infinites and the Zoltars; we even released the last Zoltars LP on our own ATH Records. Well, Jared’s also such a constant ball of creation that he’s got a new LP ready under his own name, and there’s a fresh single that warrants your attention here. Centrally, there’s a stomping march from the rhythm section, pushing the song forward, allowing for all sorts of space for Jared to excel. And excel he does; he’s working with two vocal tracks, one in the front of the mix and the other adding a melodic backing vocal; it creates this bouncing joy that’s reminiscent of Panda Bear or Brian Wilson, leaving you with huge pop feels. If you’re into it, as you should be, Jared is releasing Secret Spells on October 27th via Bruit Direct Disques.

Teenage Tom Petties Drop New Single

When Teenage Tom Petties dropped their debut LP it was filled with scuzzy riffs and all sorts of noise that made it a lo-fi masterpiece for Tom Brown. But, on Hotbox Daydreams, the hooks still came to chill, but there’s a whole lot more polish on these songs, as you’ll hear with “Bad Hire.” It might just be the production, but this feels like a record that has huge crossover potential, a la The Rentals. It’s definitely indie, particularly the way the backing vocals are employed in some of the verses, not to mention the fuzz swirling around. Still, I can’t help but hear the punch shining in every instant, destined to be sung along by everyone’s favorite little brother. Hotbox Daydreams is out November 3rd via Safe Suburban Home.

The Brights Share New Single

Trickling in over the weekend, you’ve got to be sure you spin this new track from The Brights. Having announced their debut LP, the group add another whimsical pop tune to their repertoire, hopefully enticing you to jump on board. For those that live somewhere in the Good Morning/Alex G realm, you’re definitely going to find that same gentle approach to the songwriting; I think there are some brighter melodies here, particularly as the vocals rise, only to drop in with a thud from the musical element. It’s weird, but for some reason, this Aussie bunch really feels like down-home Texans, just playing light guitar pop with a huge expanse behind them. Give a spin, then grab Oyster Rock from Meritorio Records on December 1st.

Baked and the Zells Announce Split on Crafted Sounds

Looking back at a few things I missed while folks are thinking of a “holiday,” I was shocked at my own faults as I missed the announcement of the Zells and Baked working on a new split release for Crafted Sounds, titled Queensburgh. For my two cents, Baked come across like a really heavy version of Pedro the Lion; the vocals have that similar syllabic fade, like a wave of emotion washing over you, only to ebb away. Still, there’s a heaviness in the riffs, keeping you cool. For their part, the Zells seem stoked to bring you the sunnier side of pop, kicking off a track that brings in a steadier toe-tap throughout, which for some reason reminds me of all the Wilco-indebted pop-punkers of years past. Totally cool. The split EP will be out on November 2nd via Crafted Sounds.

His His Share Ford Econoline

Wasn’t sure if tons of folks would be covering music today, so felt like the perfect time to slide this His His track into your day. It’s the sort of pop stuff that I adore, akin to Papercuts, where it straddles the world between murky and melodic, working with these light flourishes that seem just on the edge of fading into obscurity. I love the subtlety of it all, particularly when there’s a light uptick and the vocals get an added touch with some light backing work that really lets the song sink into your skin. If you’re digging, keep an eye out as His His has a North American tour working starting this October!

 

Last Week’s Jams (10.2 – 10.6)

Kind of a hectic week on my end over here, with RayRay being out of town, B.Gray getting ready to fest, and well, the usual life goes on. Managed to squeeze in a couple of phenomenal shows, so that’s a bonus, catching both Lewsberg and the Walkmen. Tons of fun songs hit last week, though admittedly, it seemed a bit thin in comparison to weeks gone by. Still, Onyon dropped fresh tunes, and Lower Plenty finally dropped their marvelous new No Poets LP. Loved that English Teacher bop, so chose it to start off the playlist. Unfortunately, one of my favorite tunes was that new Lightheaded, but it wasn’t streaming yet, so be sure to check in with Slumberland Records on that note. Monday is here. So is the music.
