ACL 2025 in Photos: Saturday

Today, we have the big gallery from Saturday at Austin City Limits Festival‘s first weekend. It is another big one and features our chosen headliner for the fest, The Strokes. Yes, Julian was being inconvenienced by being on stage. But, any other behavior would be unexpected and signs of trouble at home.

The big list of performers captured, whether with intent or as a way to have some fun holding my camera, is as follows: Inoha (San Antonio getting it right early), Next of Kin (perfect tent set), Ocean Alley (Aussie pop), Modest Mouse (nice), Magalena Bay (buzzy blue), The Backseat Lovers (not my jam, but I get the appeal), Japanese Breakfast (festival set is getting super tight) and The Strokes (Julian’s parole hearing).

I’ll take a moment to give props to ACL for the sound this year. The Strokes were loud all the way to the hill. Also, the crowd for Sabrina was not what I thought it would have been. Is there fatigue setting in for fans of the girl pop jet set? Anyway, click through…

Joyer Are At the Movies

The much anticipated Joyer record is just two weeks away from the drop date, and with that, they’ve got one more album sampler for your ears. Of all the tunes they’ve dropped this might be the one that hits closest to my daily listening habits, hanging on the edge of an atmospheric piece that takes an acoustic structure and stretches it into this pensive realm where your able to sit in the middle of the tune and soak the melody up. Really enjoying the previews we’ve got, and looking to On the Other End of the Line, out October 24th via Julia’s War.

Cistern Announce Debut Album

Canadian outfit Cistern have been on my radar for a few years, featuring members of Nov3l and Crack Cloud, so when news broke of their debut album on the list for October releases, I was ready to jam. On my first several runs through of this lead single, I was instantly drawn to the sharp groove that hits, cutting the dancefloor up with these high kicks and just a little playfulness; you’ll get a little vocal treat that’s reminiscent of their hit “Crisis” too, so stay with your ears locked in. The group worked on the album by piecing the tunes together, working in notes here and there, and you can certainly hear that in the back half of this tune. If you’re ready to rock to this tune, then you’ll be ready to rock to Rhizomes when it drops on October 17th.

Speed Week Return with Automate Me

A few weeks ago we brought you the lead single from the forthcoming Speed Week LP, and now here we are with another growling bit of indie rock that solidifies the band’s place in my listening rotation. Musically, they shift into snapping rhythms and angular knife cuts on the guitar, providing the listener with a jittery sensation while Elliot Gee stalks the audience. The song’s swirling about you, but Gee keeps things centered, like the gravitational pull with an emphatic delivery that matches up with the modern world; I do love how he pulls a little bit of Johnny Rotten in the line “I want you to automate me!” Look for their Weak Speed LP on August 16th via Endless Recordings.

Wavepool Return with Blue Moon

French outfit Wavepool are offering their own take on the modern shoegaze/dreampop genre, and while the lineage is clear, they bring a slightly different vibe, which I’m always appreciative of on my end. As the track begins, it comes across as one would expect, but something in the way the vocals hit just comes across completely softened, using backing vocals to create a silkier delivery. Then, what caught me was the brightness of the guitars as they shot off into the ether; they take a sunnier tone, contrasting to the genre’s penchant for walls of noise; it’s not a huge digression but one that allowed for the depth in the band’s process to rise to the surface. New single comes at you courtesy of Howlin Banana.

Trash Man Share Cool Until It’s Not

Tony Molina better watch his back, as Trash Man are sliding into that 1 minute power-pop territory; I think there’s both as long as they keep cranking out infectious earworms for us all. “Cool Until It’s Not” jumps right in with a grinding guitar swells, met my Alex Majaverian’s voice. Those vocals seem to climb the stairs along the way, tip-toeing along the melody as the song rises to meet your ears. The fade out into the refrain of “cool until it’s not” is met with some swollen keys too, buoying the hook and making sure you come back for more. This is the title track to the new Cool Until It’s Not LP, which is out this Friday via YK Records.

Dedstrange Sign Sunset Images

Today we bring you news that two of our favorite things are uniting: Mexico City and Dedstrange Records. RayRay and I love DF, and we’re really excited that the the label has picked up industrial noise makers, Sunset Images. Below you’ll find a new single, which is a remix from A Place to Bury Strangers. The drum work bites at your heels, forcing you to run through a shadowy hallway filled with reverberating riffs of noise; those moments get an emphatic punctuation from time to time, highlighting the intensity of the sound coming from the group. Their new album Oscilador will be out in January of next year, so expect more noise coming your way soon!

ACL 2025 in Photos: Friday

Right back at it after three days of Levitation, I spent last weekend out shooting Austin City Limits 2025 Weekend One. Admittedly, the lineups don’t suit our norms around here, but there are some throwbacks, a few locals and a some new names to create eye candy. After all, how can I turn down a chance to photograph Empire of the Sun?

The Friday edition brings photos from around grounds, including some bonus stuff that looks cool, of Asleep at the Wheel (tradition), Spill Tab, Good Neighbors (britpop), Amble (Irish folkpop), Nike Youre (flyby shots at BMI), Panda Bear (vibes), King Princess, The Favors (Finneas and Ashe), MJ Lenderman, Role Model (tiktok C&W?), Cage the Elephant (fire and jump shots), Empire of the Sun (costume changes) and Dr. Dog (all the hits).

New Jay Som Single featuring Hayley Williams

While the pop world has their Taylor Swift album, the indie world will get their equivalent this Friday when the new record from Jay Som drops. Melina Duterte has spent the past several years working in the studio, bringing other people’s crafts the special touch her ear can bring. But, as we turn to her work and latest single, it’s clear that she’s mastered the balance that makes indie folks listen into her work. This song begins in a benign fashion, sampled drum beats and a trickling guitar while the vocals embrace a bedroom pop fashion. When the live drums come into play, you can feel the craft begin to build, though Duterte holds it back, letting the listener sort of thirst for more. They’ll get that in the latter half of the tune where the heaviness is unleashed, backed by Hayley Williams joining in to lend her own vocal strengths to the Jay Som project. Belong is out this Friday via Polyvinyl Records.

A New Bee Bee Sea Single

The Italian scene is one I like to circle back to, unearthing some gems that probably skip the masses here in the States, like this new single from Bee Bee Sea. It’s a sloppy bit of frantic garage rock, the sort that would have made Thee Oh Sees really proud. The drum work gives the song this steady beat, while the guitars provide this jittery energy that shakes the tune and the listener to the core. As a band, they flirt with the song’s edge and energy, while also getting in just a bit of playfulness that makes the whole thing a joy. I’ve included the 7″ link, as the B-Side is a power pop gem you’ll want to also spend a minute or three with! It’s out now via Wild Honey Records.
