When summer hits, there seems to be an infinite amount of music bouncing about these parts, particularly in the Austin scene, as we saw this last week. We had new album announcements from A Giant Dog and Jordan Moser, new singles from Cast of Thousands, Marry Cherry and Genuine Leather; BLK ODYYSY also dropped an album. But, there was still plenty of music outside of Austin we loved, like new stuff from Gaadge, Wombo and Your Heart Breaks. Tons of music to absorb below, so feel free to indulge in all stuff you might have missed.

Today is one of those weird days where you look through your email and everything reeks of Austin. Feel like it’s our duty to spend some time and give a little coverage to those working in our city, even if its just the littlest bump. We’ve got old friends, old standbys and an artist I’ve just been getting into, so I’ll let you decide which is which!

Certain Times Share Spectral, Release Desire

I have made sure you were more than aware of Desire, the brand new LP from Brooklyn’s Certain Times; today is the actual release day, so we’re celebrating by offering a glimpse of another tune, “Spectral.” When listening through the whole of the record, the band’s brand of synth pop plays with the contrast between the dark and playful sides of the genre, with this new single living more in the darkened side, slowed down by the pulse of the tune. You can see this juxtaposed with a track like “Power,” which holds this incredible bounce that pulses and grooves; it’s like Sleigh Bells, but good! All of Desire is filled with tunes bouncing back and forth with catchy groves and textured synth work, so stream the whole thing HERE, or grab it from Double Phantom Records.

Your Heart Breaks Shares New Single with Kimya Dawson and David Christian

We are just over a month away from the release of the new album from Your Heart Breaks, and they continue to amaze me with the incredible voices who’ve lent their voices to the project. Having already brought in one of my favorites in John Samson, they seem intent on upping the ante by adding Kimya Dawson and Comet Gain‘s David Christian. The song’s set to a steady gallop, with little accents hanging in the background, but it leaves plenty of room for great lyricism and vocal work. I forgot how playful and charming Dawson could be, but David’s performance transported me back to the late 90s when I first heard Comet Gain…it should say enough about their songwriting that Clyde Petersen was able to get all these great voices together to life their craft. I’m thinking the Wrack Line might be a secret charmer you should all put on your radar; it drops on July 7th via Kill Rock Stars.

American Trappist Share Nobody’s Laughing, Drop Poison Reverse

Today is the day you can immerse yourself in the splendor of the latest LP from Philly’s American Trappist, offering up a solemn bit of slowcore. I love all the space the band leave in this song, letting the emotion just drop through the speakers and seep into your skin. There’s something about it that reminds me of Mazzy Star in the vocals, even with a male lead as opposed to Hope; it has something to do with the way the notes just kind of hang in the air, floating like bubbles, waiting to pop as the melody hits your ears. Give Poison Reverse a listen and let the slow burn start your weekend.

Marry Cherry Share Colors Single

A little over a year ago we introduced you to new psychedelic bangers Marry Cherry, who gave us a rad video for one of their early singles. This past week, they dropped “Colors,” picking up on those heavy riffs and wailing walls of noise, sonically tying the song into the track’s title as it encourages you to see that wash of ROYGBIV. Although they bring in the headstrong brand of psych, I love how they’re always flirting with proper melody, giving just the faintest hint of pop sensibility to the layered rock n’ roll swagger they’re pushing through the speakers. Drop in to this tune today!

Chapter Music Share Another Single from the Particles Reissue

Slow days mean you can dive to the bottom of your emails and pick out the true gems, like this track from the Particles. You can immediately hear why everyone in our circle is so excited to get their hands on this 1980s Bubblegum reissue. A nice little shuffling guitar line runs underfoot, with the bob and weave from the bass lines while the drums play it extra snappy. It all reaches its apex when you toss it in with the candied vocals, just in case you needed something to sweeten the deal here. In addition to this single, Chapter Music have also made two other tracks available, giving you a total of 5 tunes to hear for those who are just being introduced to the charms. The reissue will be available on July 7th, with US folks able to grab it from Seasick.

Fleur Bleu E Prep Debut Album, Share Single

If you find yourself drifting a bit today, then might I suggest you dive into this new track from Parisian outfit Fleur Bleu E, accompanying the announcement of their debut LP. Almost instantly you’re steeped in this almost ambient vocal; it’s as if you’re ears are being caressed ever so carefully from the inside. It’s likely we’d probably file this under dream pop, but the way that it creates this cinematic vibration seems to supersede the genre…could just be me. Anyways, escapist pop music is at its best here, so keep an eye out for Unrequited Love this Fall via Pan European Recordings.

Bingo Boys Release Freak Out & Leave, Share Stuck

Sometimes you just need your hair blown back by a furiously paced track, and there aren’t a whole lot of bands doing it better than the Bingo Boys. They’ve just dropped Freak Out & Leave, drawing comparisons to bands like the Spits, likely owing to that darkly tinged punk that kicks the track into gear. While I’m on board with that, I appreciate how things open a slightly poppier feel as the vocals push the pace too, all the way to the howl just before the 1 minute mark. Quick and punchy, give the tune a listen then dive into the rest of the record!

Sprints Share New Single and Video

Clearly I’ve been on a more upbeat and rocking kick lately and this new single “Adore Adore Adore” from Dublin based artist Sprints will surely add another song to my summer rockers playlist. After a brief video intro, the song kicks off into a whirlwind of 2 and a half minutes of sheer energy, screaming vocals and tons of in your face bravado. I am here for every ounce of it.
