One of the albums I’m most excited about hitting this next month is the fresh LP from Lewsberg. I’ve been following the band thanks to 12XU the last few years, and this new single ups the ante on the band’s sound, kicking in a joyous bit of bounce. Arie’s matter-of-fact delivery has a similar style to Stephen Malkmus or maybe even Bill Callahan, which is given this buoyancy by the chiming guitar work. Those riffs are razor sharp, encircling you as the drums push on with a snappy kick that’ll have your head bobbing in no time. This will be a release the cool kids at your lunch table, or water cooler, are talking about for the next few months. Plus! They’re coming to the US in September and October, with a October 5th date in Austin. Out and About hits on September 15th.

Holy Wave – Five of Cups

For the past however many years, Holy Wave has been working in the Austin music scene, often times as the sort of bastard step-child of heavy-hitters the Black Angels, and sadly overlooked more often than not. Careful ears will have seen that the group have been gradually moving away from similarities, and Five of Cups is the perfect statement album, making the group a powerful beast all their own. Broke it down into track by track for you all, with some trite final thoughts at the end.

Brita Phillips and Kramer Share Video for Dream #3

Earlier this year, Shimmy Disc released this incredible Rings of Saturn Box Set; it was a collection of collaborative EPs in 7″ format, featuring tons of incredible artists like Brita Phillips (Luna/D&B) and Kramer. Now we’ve got an accompanying video for their track, created by none other than Kramer himself. The wash, or film style, takes on the dreaminess alluded to in the song’s lyrics, building on that sort of sleepy haze in your head. Musically, this song’s all about the careful tip-toeing of the vocals, creeping through your ears with sparkling melody that you’ll definitely find touching. Plus, there’s added bonus points for Austin’s Thor Harris fleshing out the textures with light marimba work! Rings of Saturn is available now!

Indianna Hale Shares Another Single from Yesterday’s Glitter

Admittedly, I have a cliche opinion about what San Francisco likely sounded like in the late 60s, and perhaps that’s filled with Hollywood misinformation…but even still, it seems like Indianna Hale has channeled the ghost of her current hometown. Her latest single is filled with groovy psychedelia and stunning musicianship. That said, it almost feels like the musical piece is really just a fancy get-up meant to set up the listener to swoon when Hale’s vocals open into their delightful croon. In fact, it almost feels like Indianna is haunting the Hollywood version of paisley paths, and I couldn’t be more stoked to spend more time with Yesterday’s Glitter; it drops on September 1st via Perpetual Doom.

Red Pants Announce Not Quite There Yet

I love Red Pants so much that I had to send them a note to apologize for not getting the track up on Friday when they announced Not Quite There Yet. I spent a lot of time with their last LP, When We Were Dancing, but I’m super impressed with the immediacy of the first single here. Sure, you can definitely hear some Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, but I’m going to throw out some late-ear Low nods here. You can feel the noise element playing into the songwriting, but there’s still that almost meditative notion that seeps through the speakers, entrancing you with this brooding blast of rock. Tons of flair coming through too in the end of this jam. Look for the new LP to drop courtesy of Meritorio Records on October 27th

Jeff Moller Shares Still Intact

We’ve been covering a lot of music from Oakland as of late, though I’ll admit, Jeff Moller‘s sound feels a bit closer to home, sonically speaking. There’s something a little wayward Western to it, just the right amount of twang hanging on those sliding guitar notes that rise through the edges. Moller’s voice definitely feels like a classic rock bit of balladry, and it doesn’t hurt that you get Jason Quever of Papercuts cutting through here on the drum kit. Jeff will be releasing his debut album, Sigh Baby on September 22nd, with expectations riding high after listening to the handful of singles made available.

Okay, so I’m back in school and coaching women’s volleyball, which of course meant we couldn’t dare draw near the 40 or so tracks we covered the week prior. But, that being said, there were some really special tunes, and some of my favorites popping up in here. Blue Ocean and Seablite announced new LPs, while the Smashing Times dropped another stellar single to whet our appetites. Local favorites Single Lash and Sun June both announced new releases too, so it was a pretty solid week. Oh, and that Optic Sink jam was so good, we might have accidentally overlapped and posted it twice! Stream below!

Bobby Emmett Shares Sludgy New Single

Though Detroit based musician Bobby Emmett may be unfamiliar to you, it’s possible you’ll recognize him, like me, from his over the top performances as a touring musician with Sturgill Simpson. Well it turns out Emmett can play a bit, and also has a knack for songwriting as evidenced by his new single “See No Evil.” It’s a sort of boozy, blues inspired jam with touches of funk inspiration and spectacular drum work. The Native Cats Announce New LP, Share My Risks is Art

I was really stoked when the Native Cats got their whole back catalog up on the DSPs, but I honestly wasn’t expecting Chloe and Julian to jump out with a fresh record too! If you’re new to the band, you’ll hear them as the kindred spirits of modern post-punk, or maybe as a band looking back on that classic era of club punk from the early 2000s. For me, I find them straddling that territory, and as ever, making it entirely their own. It’d be easy to pull off the Rapture and throw frantic cymbal work all over this…and I’d love it. But, I love it more that that’s not where they travel; they seem more intent on using Chloe’s vocals to stake claim to the risks one takes as an artist, and more importantly, as a human being you can’t file or label. It’s bewildering and powerful, immediately making me run back and play it just to get it in my head again. They’ll release the Way on is the Way Off via Chapter Music on November 10th.

Mope City Share Eat Yr Promises Single

Mope City has long been one of those little secrets, but as they look forward to Population: 4, its time everyone else gives the group a listen. They would likely be filed under slowcore nowadays, mostly due to pace. This new single, however, continues the ominous push they’ve made shared with us this year, toiling in that sort of experimental hardcore territory, tied to the shores of melody. Discordant notes and heavy riffs intermingle here, though the vocals feel like a young Kim Gordon beckoning you to come into the band’s recording space where they pummel you with those riffs all over again. And, just as you thought you couldn’t take it, they tease you with one more melodic tickle of the ear bones…and we’re done. If this is something you’d dig, Population: 4 is out via Tenth Court on October 13th.
