Let your mind drift a little by listening to this tune from Thailand’s Salad. It’s brevity is striking, as it feels like the band have packed this stunning emotion right into your ears. It’s a light little wayward battle, with hints of guitar sliding through your speakers, and these really gentle notes that are so delicate and charming that I couldn’t help but to share with you immediately. That said, there’s really not a lot out there in terms of the band, so hoping you can enjoy what little we have, as they’re definitely winning me over with this single.

Stranded Drop Aftermath Single

A love for old school Britpop and dance-oriented pop is turning Stranded into an absolute force to be reckoned with, at least in my ears. David Mansfield project will be dropping Velvet Trace at the end of September, but just let this new single wrap itself around your brain. It begins with this heavy bit of beat work, that sort of trip-based groove that resonates with electronica and psychedelia fans alike. Thumping drums and beats build, only for this guitar line to knife its way in, joined by another that jangles and dances within the confines of the track. Mansfield has these weary vocals, almost as if they are coming from a faint distance or run through a tin-can-with-strings; it adds this sort of musical texture that deepens the heavy trip you’re going to take when you click play. And, add to that, the brevity, and you’ve perfected the craft; there’s no need to take that song beyond four minutes, as some acts are wont to do. Velvet Trace drops September 25th via Grey Market Records.

Slow Burning Electropop from Fake Fever

Wednesdays always feel like you’re half way there, yet you can’t quite take that step to get to the weekend…that could also just be my general state of being with one foot straddling the past and the present. Anyways, my mood this morning gets a little accompaniment by way of this Fake Fever tune. Andrew Barnes days in heavier bands has definitely lefts its mark, as this track is all about the build; it adds textures that make you feel as if you’re slowly climbing some treacherous mountain. The weight is heavy on your back, but you keep trudging forward, and when you get glimmers of vocals, you can feel the sun on your face, the brightness of the pop structure shining through. Fake Fever will release Inside the Wall via My Pet Flamingo on September 1st.

Diners Release Someday I’ll Go Surfing

You ever come across a voice and it just feels like somehow its speaking to you? Well, each time I press play on a track from the new Diners LP, I can’t help but think of Blue Broderick’s vocal charms. Musically, there’s this sweet simplicity, with the focus stemming on the steady chug of those twinkling guitar riffs; it makes sense that the new LP was produced by Mo Troper, as this track completely builds along similar Troper territory, twisting good old fashioned rock styles into undeniable hits you can’t get out of your head. Classic pop rock never goes out of fashion, especially when its executed this well; Domino is out August 18th via Bar/None Records.

Onyon Announce Last Days on Earth

If you’ve not got German band Onyon on your radar yet, might I suggest traveling back in time to revisit their self-titled debut from 2022. If you’re already hip to it, or just looking for something new, Trouble in Mind Records just announced a fresh LP is coming from the group in October. Personally, I love the way the song sort of hits you with these thumping drum beats and this warbling wayward guitar line; the guitar line continues while another more angular note rings in, adding to the tension as the track seems to pogo about in your brain. When the vocals first enter, they do so in this cavernous mode, creating this ominous feel that pervades due to the growling bass line. As the track progresses, there’s a little more emphasis hitting, with the vocals almost operating as a call and response to the musical textures bounding in your ears. If you’re into cool vibes, then check out this ripper; Last Days on Earth is out October 13th.

Sundozer Shares Debut Single

We’ve always gotta keep our ears to the speakers in terms of Austin acts, as it seems there’s constantly something we can dive into, like Sundozer. Honestly, I don’t know a bunch about the project, other than its relatively knew, considering this is their debut single. This track has a bit of that late night chill to it, albeit washed over with hints of dream pop and jangling notes; you can hear the guitars dancing all around as the wash of synths coats the song’s core. Whispering vocals crest and fall into the track, sinking into the mix while the rhythm hits giving off just a bit of a kick to the tune. It’s a bit of everything, be it bedroom pop or indie pop, perfect for late night chills or daydreaming at your window.

Will Johnson Announces No Ordinary Crown

Back somewhere in the very late 90s, maybe even like 2000, I remember a friend dropping this Centro-Matic CD my way; I was hooked on Will Johnson‘s voice that day, and have followed his work avidly throughout his distinguished career. Today, our buds over at Keeled Scales have announced his new LP, No Ordinary Crown, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic. There’s a heaviness to the riff work that’s living under Will’s voice; it’s matched by the thunderous drum hits smashing through your speakers. But, like a some magical gravitational pull, Johnson tugs us into his world with his distinctive voice. Then, the tune takes off and smashes into this rocking moment, stomping the floor with a huge burst of explosive energy that’s sure to have you turning the knob all the way to 11. No Ordinary Crown drops on September 15th.

Animals in Exile Share Fresh Single

I really love the swagger that rocks in this brand new Animals in Exile tune; it sets up the track as this heavy riffed bit of alt rock. But, where I got hooked was the sucker’s chorus. The bravado is shunned here, letting the song shift gears into this more melodic stretch that’s sure to have you thinking of late 90s British pop rock, which is exactly my cup of tea. This tune, along with several others, will be featured on the soundtrack from the forthcoming film Publish or Perish; that soundtrack is available today, but be on the lookout HERE for an accompanying video tomorrow!

Zum Audio Compilation #5 Shares Baus Tune

Zum Audio is celebrating 25 years in the biz, and with that, they’ve also got a new compilation on the way in mid-August. Personally, I love a compilation. You find one or two acts you love, then you get turned onto a half-dozen new bands to fawn over. Today, we’re fawning over this new Baus track, which is part of Zum’s Volume 5 Comp. It’s a frantic tune, cutting along the lines of all your favorite post-punk, though tossing in bands like Wire and Pylon isn’t necessarily a bad place to start for comparisons. I love how the sharpness gets erratic in nature, sharpening the sound as the rhythm grooves and moves beneath you. And just as you jittered into love, the song ends, and you’re left catching your breath. You’ve got time, as Volume 5 doesn’t drop until August 18th.

The Smashing Times Announce This Sporting Life

Feel like I would wrap up my coverage on this Monday with another apology tour, but this time for the Smashing Times who announced This Sporting Life this past Friday. Bloom was one of my favorite LPs in 2022, so to see a new record hit so soon has me salivating here. And, if this song’s any indicator, then we might be in for one incredible musical ride; they cite Television Personalities as a big nod on this go round…I love the jittery nature of their amped up psychedelic pop, riding around with the constant shake of tambourine hitting my ear drums. Oh, and did I mention those sugary vocal harmonies working throughout the tune, creating this gratifying warmth that’s likely to raise the hairs on your arms. K Records will release the new LP on October 25th.
