Couchboy Share New Single, Prep Singles Collection

David MacDonald is just hanging out in Massachusetts, cranking out jam after jam, so much so that he’s even dropping a Singles Collection covering the last couple of years of his songwriting as Couchboy. But, one track that I’ve been digging on isn’t making the cut, as it might be too new! Treason jumps right into, stomping hard before letting the fuzzy guitars go off on a nice ride through your speakers. MacDonald’s vocals have this sugary melodic nature to them, which is the perfect counterpoint to the driving rhythm of the track, splitting the vibe into the traditional quiet loud quiet dynamic. His songwriting is steeped in a classic alternative song, and you’ll be all the better kicking the volume up super high here!

Semiwestern Share Pose Single

I meant to get this new Semiwestern track up last week; it was released on Friday, brandishing a very particular brand of Texas slowcore. When I listened, I was struck by how lonesome the song felt; it feels like you’ve been sort of isolated or suspended in space, yet your not quite complaining. As I spent more time, the details surrounding the core give the song this cavernous feel behind, still making you feel small, albeit part of something larger. That’s the thing that keeps me coming back here, its like you get to soak in your solitude, take a bit of respite from all that’s around you. Lost Film Announce Keep It Together

I’ve been jamming to Lost Film for a long while now, but Jimmy’s mostly been quiet the last few years, save for the odd single here and there. I reckon he’s been working on the Relief Map label side a bit. But, none of that matters one bit as Lost Film is back with its first new full length in about 4 years! Those of you who’ve followed the project will notice the jangling guitar lines, twisting and turning around Jimmy’s voice, though they do seem a bit more patient here, moving the sound more towards a more modern bit of guitar pop. There are some snappy drum bits and emphatic vocal turns to tether the project to its origins, but absolutely nothing is wrong with a bit of growth! Keep It Together is out on September 15th.

Sea Lemon Shares Vaporized

Seattle’s own Natalie Lew and her project known as Sea Lemon really caught my attention during SXSW last March with her brand of dreamy and airy indie pop. Today I am delighted to share why she caught my attention with this delightful new single called “Vaporized.” Lew builds this delicate pop sound, but then also builds on it with a slowly driving and intensifying sound along with perfectly placed, and expertly written, lyrics. It’s sure to improve your day with every listen.

This single is part of a new EP entitled Stop at Nothing due out on August 25th via Luminelle Recordings.

Holy Wave Share New Single

If I went back about ten years to the first time we heard Holy Wave, I’ll be honest, I might not have expected them to end up where they are now, musically stepping outside of the traditional psych realm they long championed as part of the Austin scene. Their latest track, seems like you’ve taken some nod to a jazz-infused krautrock and blended it with the foggy atmospheric pop of acts like the Clientele; it feels like a track perfect for a day drenched in rain and clouds (something we’re not quite accustomed to down here in Austin!). My fascination really circles this incredible rhythm pulse it gives the song this thick life that allows the rest of the tune to swell and ebb; it’s a beautiful piece that has us really excited for Five of Cups, which is out August 4th via Suicide Squeeze. The 1981 Share Make It Right Video

We’ve covered lots of stuff from Dandy Boy Records the past few years, and the 1981 are definitely an act I think we’re going to get behind. Honestly, I loved the way the song started out, using this brooding darkness with light guitar jangles to turn in my ear; it set up the song perfectly for the vocals to have their first entry, almost like a ghostly whisper through your speaker. But, after the 1 minute mark, the song takes a turn into this more blissful pop structure; it’s like a sedated power pop moment, completely sealing this song as an absolute hit. Give me a hook, wash it in synths, then throw in an emphatic power piece at the end to add some emphasis? Yeah, I’m in. Move On is out August 18th.

Pia Fraus Release Sunny Afternoon Single

For a band so rooted in the Estonian rock scene, it’s been really great listening to all the various changes in the sounds of the new Pia Fraus record. Sure, I can hear where their latest “Sunny Afternoon” flirts with bits of dream pop or even that sort of psychedelic tinged pop (a la Stereolab). But, even with those nods, which mostly come from the musical element, the track takes on a jazzier bit of focus, spinning into this grand territory where you feel like you’re just sailing away on vacation, drifting out to see with nothing but the sun on your back. Can’t wait to hear it all pieced together when they drop Evening Colours on July 28th via Seksound.

I’m sure you missed our weekly re-runs of all the fun stuff we post, but I was on vacation! So, I hurried this week to play catch up on all those tunes, then hurried with RayRay to get them up for your ears. We had tons of stuff covered, from ATX faves A Giant Dog to a premiere of the new track from Pretty in Pink; there was nothing short of a bunch of bangers to run…and some aren’t even up on the DSPs, so we couldn’t get those in the list. Owsley. Now there’s a name I hadn’t heard in a while. I knew I knew them/him, but I couldn’t remember any songs off the top of my head. Then, I put the record on, the first pressing of his 1999 self-titled debut, and it all came back. Ahhhh, that’s right. I recognized track 1, “Oh No, The Radio” immediately, but the real banger (if you can have one on a late 90s pop/indie adjacent record from a guy named Owsley) is track 2, “I’m Alright,” which has now been stuck in my head ever since I first gave this a spin. Advertisement Share Victory

Seattle based outfit Advertisement blew up onto the scene back in 2020 with the release of their stellar debut LP American Advertisement. Since then, only a few singles have dropped while the band toured extensively and prepped for a follow up to the debut. Well now your wait is over as the group just announced their sophomore effort Escorts with the release of this new single “Victory.” You’ll find a pure form of rock n roll that seems somewhat lost in the current landscape but is certainly welcome and fresh for this listener.
