Weird Numbers Announce S/T LP + Share Soda

For some reason, there’s something in the beat of this new Weird Numbers song that makes me feel like stalking about in my classroom right now (don’t worry…no students are present). There’s something dark and dangerous about it, until those buzzsaw guitars start to rip their way through the rhythm of it all. It’s like the song’s tossing and turning you like a dingy at sea amidst a storm, with the vocals serving as the rope that tethers you to the dock. All of it just feels dark and dangerous at once, with hints of hooks bubbling carefully beneath the current. The band release their new self-titled LP on March 3rd via Dandy Boy Records.

Mary Anne’s Polar Rig Share Latest Single

Every time the folks at Rama Lama Records send us a new song from Mary Anne’s Polar Rig, I have certain expectations. Good ones, mind you, but expectations. Their latest single, however, threw me for a huge loop. The first minute or so sheds the abrasive nature they usually bring to the table, favoring a bit more of a clean shimmer, almost sparkling with Malin’s vocals carefully moving the song forward. Elements of noise begin to creep in, though done with restraint to elongate the emotional pull; even as the volume seems prominent that shine on the melodic center is clear, almost shielding the listener from the barrage in the distance. It’s a nice little mixture of everything the band excel at; Makes You Wonder is out on March 24th.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Announce Crumble EP

After releasing last year’s excellent IV, Austin’s Letting Up Despite Great Faults return today with the announcement of a brand new EP. That, of course, means we get a brand new single (with a Mobb Deep reference no less!). When you press play, you’re immediately greeted by this cacophony of melodic noise, matched with Annah’s vocals running through the middle. Suddenly, the noise drops off and you get the melody clear and open, sparkling with the immediacy of a great pop hook. Back and forth goes the song, balancing on the tightrope between an abyss of noise and pop. The band are set to release the Crumble EP on April 4th, with rumors of tour popping up online.

Constant Smiles Share Gold Like Water

This new Constant Smiles stuff is sounding pretty spot on, in terms of where my listening brain is at currently. It’s just really subtle, well-executed pop songwriting, just a bit left of the dial. That light keyboard bounce that trickles in atop the bubbling beat is perfect; it creates this realm of relaxation, allowing me to sit back and let the song wash over “like water.” When the vocals cruise in, they’re lapping at your toes as you stand ashore, nipping at you with little twinkling melodies. A little percussive mix-up offers just enough differentiation to keep the song rolling interestingly along, particularly as more accompaniment pieces flutter in from the background. The band release Kenneth Anger on March 3rd via Sacred Bones, with some dates throughout March, including a stop at SXSW.

Spiral XP Share Another Ripper from It’s Been a While EP

This Friday you’ll be able to stream all the songs from Spiral XP‘s brand new It’s Been a While EP, and with that, it seems only fitting that we hit up the latest single. For me, this song’s all about those churning riffs, ringing out in the front of the mix here. Sure, the jettisoning notes that shoot off into the horizon are great, but there’s something primal and rhythmic about the lead work; it’s like you’re running full steam ahead, almost out of balance and about to fall flat on your face. Except the vocals keep you steady; they’re calmed indifference in the midst of the noise holds you upright, keeps your ears and guarantees you get a taste of enough melody to come back to this track! Look for the EP this Friday courtesy of Danger Collective.

The High Water Marks Return with New Single

If, by some odd chance, you missed out on last year’s Proclaimer of Things, you can certainly rectify that by running to listen to last year’s hit LP. But, if you just want to jump right in to the new new, give a listen to the High Water Marks latest single, with the promise of new LP coming later in the year! I won’t even mention the ties to Elephant 6 (oops!) because the song’s just a straight pop rock tune that you’ll want to play again and again. It brings about just the slightest heaviness in the riffs, with a solid bop going on in the percussive element keeping your toes tapping. Oh, and if your band is doing dual vocal approaches, please make them this delightful. We’ll keep you posted on Your Next Wolf when we hear more!

Going Back to Belhoss’ Hiding EP

The great thing about running a little small site is people hit you up from time to time, just looking for an ear, which is how I hit upon Belhoss‘ Hiding EP from a year or so ago. When I played the song below, I relished the slow burn of the musical elements; it’s got this fuzzy cavernous vibe to it, and the movement is just slow enough to let the melody sink into you. In the vocals, they’re almost too distorted, just on the cusp of coming across like another instrument, which I don’t mind one bit. So, if you like what you hear, be sure to check out the full EP!

Holy Vision Share New Single

Don’t you just love it when a song hits you right in the face upon pressing play? That’s exactly what you’re going to get from Jackson’s Holy Vision; the band offer up a blend of ambient shoegaze smattered with forceful blasts of discord and noise. The vocals get to hide just behind the curtain, lurking somewhere in the song’s shadow, creating an almost textural feel to what’s in store here. Musically, the chorus is where you get the guitars back up to speed, furiously clawing at your speakers to let the volume bleed out. Happy Hump Day!

Daiistar Release Debut Single

Those of you looking for nostalgic 90s rock n’ roll vibes need look no further than the work of Austin’s Daiistar. Their sound definitely has some interesting bits to it, which perhaps owes to production work by Alex Maas of Black Angels fame. You get the sort of acid house meets BJM psychedelia in the rhythm section, offering up that sort of hip-shaking thunder beneath the surface. Some fiery riffs rip through in between various riffs, pulling back to let the vocals get the focal point. In that, the vocals here seem to be channeling Brit rockers Repulica on their hit single “Ready to Go.” Give it a spin and if you’re on the West Coast they’re on tour this week playing some shows.

The Golden Dregs Share Vista Single

Having followed The Golden Dregs since around, I’m really excited that I’ll finally get to catch Benjamin Woods’ project live this year at SXSW. But, before that date, I’ll get to spend some time with On Grace & Dignity, the new LP out this Friday via 4AD. Woods possesses this deep tonal quality that’s certainly reminiscent of Bill Callahan. But, while there’s certainly a sort of folk kinship there, The Golden Dregs seems to add a bit more swing to vibrancy to the genre, which has a lot to do with the way Benjamin controls his voice. Sure, there are little Western flourishes in the guitar work, but this new single almost has this killer swagger, an assuredness that the songwriting is some of his best work to date. Looking forward to Friday when I can dive into the whole album!
