Don’t Sleep on SUEP + Stream Shop
Bands like Porridge Radio, Joanna Gruesome and the Tubs have gotten lots of press in the States, but I’ve been surprised by how many folks have slept on the SUEP stuff’ the band interestingly shares members with all the same acts, plus a few other thrown in to the mix. That said, I promise you, you can’t really pigeonhole what they’re working on. Their latest Shop EP feels like its got bits of ESG and Blondie and Talking Heads all butting heads with one another; I think my favorite is the darkened dub-ish number “Misery.” From track to track, they’re taking risks and never hanging in just one spot, so feel free to go on a journey with this lot. Their new Shop EP is available now via Memorials of Distinction.

While we all chill inside today here in the ATX, why not take the time to check out some new tunes and listen to a few just released 2023 albums. My personal suggestion for your streaming pleasure today comes from London based outfit 
RayRay turned me onto 
With the Elephant Six documentary floating about in limited theaters, we’re lucky that the historic label is adding another act to the roster…The Rishis. The duo of Sofie Lute and Ranjan Avasthi have fleshed out their band with members of the collective, so in a sense, this if a full Elephant 6 family affair. Musically, it’s not too far off from that either, moving back and forth between explorative folk and fuzzy rockers, with this new single hitting more on the folk side of the realm. The whole of this single works over a light strum and this familiar vocal, as if you’re sitting in a guitar circle with a bunch of close friends. And, as would only make sense on the label, the track is elevated by the atmospheric nuances that float in just beneath the surface. We’re getting a cold freeze down here in Texas, but when the band release August Moon this April via Elephant 6/Cloud Recordings you can already tell that this will be perfect vibes for blossoming trees and cool breezes.
We’d like to formally apologize for some outages last week. One was our old server, the other was the process of switching 15 years (!) of writing and such over to a new server. But, we definitely still ran a ton of tunes, you just might not have been able to hear them all! So, let’s rectify that with our weekly playlist. Ran a premiere for a fresh track from Animal Scream off their new LP, plus we were excited by another new Whitney’s Playground track. Personally, I liked the babybaby_explores single a ton, despite that name driving me nuts. RayRay ran a Bratty tune to get you excited for the return of Austin Psych Fest. Plus, I had to throw in a Tom Verlaine track, as it just feels right; RIP sir.
What? Another day and another track from Meritorio Records? And from San Francisco no less?
