The High Water Marks Share Fantastic Machine

The High Water Marks are perhaps most well-known as a band led by Elephant 6 co-founder Hilarie Sidney; I think their glorious return in 2020 with Ecstasy Rhymes showed that the band is more than just the history of its members. Their newest single immediately should let you know the band mean business; it’s a quick pumping pop rock tune, gritty in its riff work when necessary, though all pulled together by the melodic notes that dominate the verses. There’s this emphatic moment in the vocals leading into the chorus like when it says “do you have to go” where the tones get this slight urgency, and it just gets me every time; then it leads into the chorus where Hilarie makes a nice vocal appearance in the backing ground. But, it’s not all melodic pop, with a fierce instrumental battle closing out the tune! This track features on Proclaimer of Things, the new album out on February 4th.

Bolywool Drops Brand New Single

It’s no secret that Sweden is a hotbed of really sweet musical sounds, and Bolywool is the latest group to pop up on my radar. Their latest single opens beautifully, crashing into your ears with this frantic mess of noise and bubbling undercurrent of melody. Those noisier bits seem to take control, until the smoky vocals come into the picture for the verses; the voice seems to bat away the wash of distortion, clearing up the tune just briefly before the chorus comes in with another smashing bit of discordant noise. This tune will feature on their new album, Dead Reckoning, dropping this March!

Yea-Ming and the Rumors Announce So, Bird…

If you’re looking for a track to put in your pocket and take with you into the weekend, please please please take this track from Yea-Ming and the Rumors. This is the newest single from their forthcoming So, Bird LP, and damned if its not the charmer that just feels like it fits into this week’s vibe. There’s certainly a nostalgic mood in Yea-Ming’s vocals, shimmering with just a hint of smokiness that might fit in alongside the Crystals or the Ronettes. But, the musical style is more modern, pulling form a realm where psychedelia and dream pop mix in the musical pool. So, Bird will be out March 14th courtesy of Dandy Boy Records.

Pintandwefall Announce Seventh Baby

Finnish outfit Pintandwefall, who dropped the stunning Your Stories Baby in 2020, return with their 7th album, aptly titled Seventh Baby. I love how the new tune opens with this heavy drum stomp and ringing guitar line creating this jagged wall of noise. Once the vocals catch up, they bring this powerful ballad feel, soaring boldly and directly. We get a quick glimpse at the chorus, but it quickly gets yanked away to let the tune go back to its core. You can feel the track picking up around the 2 minute mark, building vocal textures on top of one another as the song’s title is layered with various tones atop one another; it’s a feeling that’s likely going to have your stomach churning and turning in the best way. Seventh Baby will be released via Soliti Music on February 25th.

Silver Liz Release Until Lately

Sometimes you just need a soft pop ballad to kind of mellow out your day, and with everything going on out there, I’m grateful bands like Silver Liz are giving me a chance to take a breath and just enjoy a nice ditty. The Brooklyn duo’s latest single works over this light strum and Carrie Wagner’s sparkling voice, as little synth elements twinkle in the far off distance. Drums begin to enter the fray, furthering the textural depth of the track, and things seem to swell to hook-laden proportions, all the while Carrie’s voice keeps us grounded as listeners. Keep an eye out on these two, as they’ve got an album in the works for later this year.

ME REX Share Skin It Itches

As a big pterosaur fanatic, it seems required that I’ve got to throw my hat into the ring for ME REX‘s forthcoming Pterodactyl EP. It’s a good thing that the song’s they’re crafting are up to the challenge, particularly the latest single, “Skin It Itches.” When this one starts, there’s a noticeable calm to it, almost thoughtful. It’s a nice little tease, as the band’s frantic nature definitely makes an appearance as the tune trickles out. That chorus has this punch to it, though it’s not heavy-handed, with just the right balance of volume and backing vocals. Perfect jam if you ask me, particularly if you’re a fan of acts like Martha. The new EP is out on February 4th via Big Scary Monsters.

Methyl Ethel Drop New Tune featuring Stella Donnelly

You ever stumble into a track, and you’ve got one thing on your mind, then suddenly your just floored and rushing to press repeat? I should have known that anything with Stella Donnelly was going to win me over, but this Methyl Ethel tune just slinks its way and you can’t escape. Sounds like sampled strings stuck to craft this pulsating groove, and then Donnelly comes in and erupts in the chorus, certifying that this tune’s a damned fine hit you’ll want to play again and again. There’s just something so fun and playful here, yet still feels like its a fresh sound you’re not likely to hear anywhere else. Are You Haunted is out on February 18th.

Great Lakes Drop Last Night’s Smoke

Sometimes old habits are hard to kick, and in the case of my appreciation for Americana, I’m almost there…except when it comes to Ben Crum’s Great Lakes. Prepping the band’s 7th album, Contenders, Ben and company released this new single, and I can’t stop just jamming out to it at my desk. It’s got all the elements you’d expect from a Southern rock record, influenced by heavy jams and country licks, but there’s also something really intimate and personal about Ben’s vocal delivery; it sounds like you’re sharing a beer with your poetic best friend…and we could all dig on that vibe. Contenders will be out February 4th via HHBTM.

Holm Shares The Rope Single

I don’t know what it is about the latest tune from Yung frontman Mikkel Holm Silkjaer, aka Holm. There’s something that sounded so familiar in the opening minute, but the track kept kind of evolving, opening up these new layers that I couldn’t help but fawn over. There’s something in the chorus that reminds me a lot of Les Savy Fav’s Tim Harrington, so I kept diving in deeper to that moment, playing it again and again. But, I also hear bits of Brandon Flowers too in Mikkel’s voice, and you know what, it totally works. Plus, the guitar kind of dances all around the tune, jangling here, ringing out there, then breaking it all down as the track draws to a riotous close. Why Don’t You Dance is out January 28th via PNKSLM.

No Monster Club Drop Save the Circus

Irish outfit No Monster Club have a new record coming your way this year, and they open up that announcement with a really fun tune, trying to “save the circus” for us all! From the get-go, the tune introduces this jangling bounce, filling out the corners of the tune with little bits of horns before the vocals come into play. When those vocals do drop in, they dominate the tune, operating like a ringmaster, controlling everything about the track, even pushing the pace in step with the drums during the chorus. The band will be dropping deadbeat effervescent on February 11th via Emotional Response.
