The immediate hook of the guitars in this Lazy Daze tune had me swooning; I was sold before the vocals even came into the picture…such is the infectious nature of what’s at play here. As the song progresses, I’m stoked on how playful things get, with the vocals; they toy with the listener, rising up joyously, then falling back down to match up with the delicious melody that courses through the tune. Feel like the song’s too sweet for you? Well, there’s a steady little calm at play in the song’s middle, giving you a bit of a moment to catch your breath before getting caught up in the song’s joy. The Great Electric Return with the Greater Electric

We take a break from our regularly scheduled brand of rock n’ roll to bring you an instrumental tune from one of our favorite, The Great Electric. This last week the band have announced that they’ll follow up last year’s debut with The Greater Electric. Here you’ll find the group texturing with layer after layer, and it all seems to slow to a halt right near the 2 minute mark, but the electronic pulse beckons you to stick around, and the sounds come falling back into you, looping around your ears with a wonderful groove that you just can’t run away from. Tam Vantage Announces New LP

Tam Vantage, aka Tam Richards-Matlakowski, has played in some of my favorite Aussie outfits, whether you’re talking his old act Pop Singles or more recently, Girlatones. Now we’ve got Tam back at it with solo stuff, and he’s just announced Laughing Gas & Apple Pie, a new long player slated for November 5th via Still Traveller Records. This song finds Tam working his way in and out of a 10 chord cycle, letting the drum work punctuate the riffs, all the while his voice calmly soothes the listener. There’s certain moments when I hear this pristine old school pop, but other moments where I hear the track taking on a sort of GBV feel, but perhaps that’s down to the clever guitar work. Whatever the case, it’s never a bad day in my neck of the woods for a new Tam tune!

Sex Park Share Obligation

Well, just another case of the Mondays here, so feel like getting wrapped up in some sort of dark electronic blanket to cozy up next to my computer before my kids come in today. This new Sex Park tune just dropped, and it’s got some great things working for it, which works for me. The tune kind of takes on this shimmering sort of electronic pop, akin to maybe Black Marble at current. But, what really drew me in was the vocals here; I’ve heard tons of bands doing dark electronic pop after all. I love the deepness of the vocals; they remind me of Majical Cloudz and a voice I really miss. This tune appears on the band’s forthcoming LP, but it’s also on a split 7″ for Dowd Records!

Let’s start off Monday right, sneaking right in with a great track from the latest Flowertown LP. The rest of our playlist is pretty solid too, as there were some jams last week. I’ll admit I kind of feel like too many people are sleeping on Cindy still, so be sure to check out their latest single in this weeks hits. Plus, it’s great to hear our friends Letting Up Despite Great Faults drop right back in where they left off years ago. Ease into Monday with a playlist of jams we were digging last week…and have a decent day.

Flowertown – Time Trials (Paisley Shirt Records)

1 part Cindy + 1 part Tony Jay = Genius. Seriously, the first LP this band put together was great. But, they were like, you know what? We can totally do better. And they did. Not a bad track here. Just imagine yourself loving pop music but getting stuck in your best dreams. That’s this record!

BRNDA – Do You Like Salt? (Crafted Sounds)

Why yes, I do like Salt. I also like this record from BRNDA a whole lot. All of you kids that are super into that Dry Cleaning LP, but secretly hoping for a little bit more of a groove have come the right place. This band takes that post-punk/no-punk brand and gives it a swift kick in the ass. Your Friday needs it!

The Suncharms – Distant Lights (Sunday Records)

Having mostly been quiet for the last 30 some-odd years, legendary act The Suncharms recently started to pop back up in 2018, with a couple of tunes for the heralded Slumberland 30 Series. Today, you get treated to an entire record of delightful pop tunes, perhaps a little softer around the edges, but I promise you’re all the better for it!

The Arctic Flow – Lost You Long Ago (Sunday Records)

Sunday Records thought releasing one great was fine, but releasing two in one day is even better, so here we are with the follow-up to Umbrella (2017). Brian Hancheck’s songwriting has always had this incredibly strong emotional pull to it, and it doesn’t seem like he’s holding anything back on this record. It’s like a softcore jangle pop record, certainly built to woo you as your drift into a Friday afternoon.

Japan Review Announce Debut LP

Feel like it might just be a solid day to kind of hang in the corners of this darkened brand of dream pop/shoegaze notes, so here’s another to follow that Letting Up tune; it’s the album announcement from Glasgow’s Japan Review. The duo have evolved from the bedroom project of Adam O’ Sullivan into this creative duo fusing cavernous sounds to create a bit of melodic topsoil for your listening day. This announcement of a new LP comes with the single “Competition Winner,” which is dominated by this propulsive drum sample, allowing the band to sort of throw anything on top. Here’s there’s a blend of noise and melody, Adam’s voice lurking somewhere in the song’s purgatory; it all reminds me of the early days of Radio Dept. Kvetch Sound will be out on October 29th via Reckless Yes!

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Return!

You thought they were done! But no, one of my favorite Austin bands, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, have found the time to come up with another album, and we’ve got that first single below here. I love the dense nature of this tune; the way the synth work stabs through the walls of guitar noise creates like this extra outer layer you have to swim through just to find Mike Lee’s melodic whispers in the dark. While the guitars have that dreamy front, a careful ear will reveal just the slightest jangling underbelly, which you know gets to the heart of my listening habits. What a stellar way to make a return to the fray. Be on the look out for more news about a forthcoming LP!

Jessica’s Brother Announce Just Rain

As a Wave Pictures fan, it was easy to get into the first LP from Jessica’s Brother (Jonny Helm plays in both bands), but honestly, I feel like with one single, they’ve already topped that early affection. Today they announced Just Rain, and this ripper of a tune is the perfect way to kick off your Friday. The crashing guitars sound absolutely huge, like this stormy wave of distortion (and occasional soloing) bashing us over the head. That said, the trio, pull back in all the right spots, letting you take a breath before smashing you right in the face. And more fun, you can enjoy the noise, but it operates entirely separately from the generous pop moments that course throughout the tune…be that the backing bops or the core vocals from Tom. Just Rain drops this November via Fika Recordings.

Philip Frobos Shares Vacant Street

I’ve always been an Omni fan, so it’s been a lot of fun listening to the tracks from Philip Frobos‘ solo record, like the latest single “Vacant Street.” You can definitely hear some of the ties that bind the two projects, particularly in the bass and opening guitar licks on this tune. But, as the track progresses, the way Philip aims to kind of obscure and challenge his craft is really intriguing; at times it feels like the electronic elements work merely to obliterate the song, other times, they seem to add emphasis to the song’s twist and turns. His debut solo album, Vague Enough to Satisfy is out October 1st via Upset the Rhythm.
