The Persian Leaps Prep Drone Etiquette

I’ve always been a fan of Drew Forsberg’s work in the Persian Leaps; the project has consistently just dropped power pop gem after power pop gem, year after year. And, here comes Drew and the band with another release on the horizon, Drone Etiquette. This tune takes on a bit of a political bent, with Drew envisioning something catastrophic breaking through all the white noise and waking us all up (not sure this week has seen that come to fruition…but I digress). Musically, the band still land somewhere between the hooks of Fountains of Wayne and the riff work of Teenage Fanclub. Give it a spin, and look for the new EP on October 1st.

Roller Derby Shares Whatever Works

We’re working towards the weekend, yea? Well, I love to maybe sort of slink my way into with a sultry bit of pop, like this charming number from German band Roller Derby. It would certainly be hard to listen to Phline Meyer’s voice and not draw similarities to the likes of Alvvays or Camera Obscura. I love how those vocals seem perfectly matched up to the dreamier churn of the vocals that keep creeping through my speakers here. Oh, and you think they don’t know how to be playful? Just wait ’til the song’s latter half when those handclaps come join the fray to keep us all bobbing are heads.

TV Dreams Releases I.D.K Single

The Aussie scene probably knows Odin Franklin from his time in Viral Eyes, but perhaps his new project TV Dreams will provide some solid coverage overseas…I mean, we’re a big deal, right?! Today we’ve got the lead single from a forthcoming LP, toying with that brand of pop somewhere between dreamy and bedroom; it definitely has a bit more of a pronounced feel as the song unfolds before the listener. Vocals join up with Franklin and guitars sort of crash against the mix, giving a little bit of a punch the dreamy melodic vibe. Keep listening as we’re likely to hear more from this project in the next few months!

Parrot Dream Share Automatic System

I’ve been a fan of the work that Parrot Dream have been putting together since I first heard some of the singles from 2018’s Light Goes. The group, now slimmed down to a duo, have just dropped this delicious new number. It all begins with this real heavy beat, looped so that it kind of tricks your mind into following it along its darkened synth pathway. Christina Appel’s vocals hit all the right notes, kind of hiding a bit just behind the front of the song with this sort of smoky billowing. Inside the song you get a bit of a rise and fall, some moments swelling to this grand nature, while others moments pull back and play with nuance. Hopefully we get to hear more from the band as this year goes forward!

Cindy Share Lost Dog Single

Dammit! Why are you not listening to Cindy all day every day! The San Francisco band shared another single from their forthcoming 1:2 LP, and I’ll be darned if I’m not going to play this during my students’ free write time today. It’s this drifting piece of no-pop, almost as if it’s a song that’s just happy to merely exist in the world. The recording is so intimate, all the way to the crackling of the speakers and the little nuanced electronic notes toying with your ears in the distance. Every time I press play I’m just transfixed, rooted to this sort of other-worldly blank space where there’s nothing but me and this tune, drifting away into the unknown. Whatever. This better be on your year end list or you’re a fake. Look for 1:2 via Tough Love/Mt. St. Mtn. on September 1st.

Battle Ave Share My Year with the Wizard

Listening through to the latest tune from Battle Ave has me remembering the early days of Wolf Parade. Why, you may ask? Well, at times, the New York outfit seems like they’re hanging just on the cusp of being weird and out there, but they’re tethered by some melodic vocals, tying the song down to a more accessible approach. I like that it seems like the band could get really heavy and release some killer riffs, yet ultimately they’ve crafted a really solid pop song that you want to play on full blast. If you’re digging on it, keep your eyes and ears open, as the band return in October with their Battle Ave EP.

Hovvdy Share Two Brand New Singles

Another great record from Hovvdy is on the horizon, and with a little over a month away, the band opted to share 2 new singles today. I love the distinctive differences in the two tracks, setting up the album for a nice little mixture of sounds sure to charm. “Junior Day League” has this feel like it was leftover from the JEW Clarity demos; there’s something about the drum work and the vocals here that just feels like nostalgic emo pop. Plus, I love the spirit of the video; it’s got a joyous beat, so why not give it a little joyous nature…it’s a rarity nowadays. Then, skip to the next tune, “Around Again,” and you get a more melancholy approach, one that’s matched with a video that feels a bit more grainy, a bit more warn for this world. True Love is out October 1st via Grand Jury.

Ducks Ltd. Share How Lonely Are You

One of the things that I love about Ducks Ltd is that they up the jangle with this rushed presentation of those chords; it’s that skittering kick that really sells the start of their latest singles. Add in the rhythm section that the duo constructed together in various apartments, and you’ve got this incredible sound that definitely nods to Sarah (particularly some of those Another Sunny Day singles!). The video features Tom and Evan walking around the Niagra Falls area, though each doing it from opposite sides of the border…perhaps playing into the thematic message of the song itself. And all this before I even mention the lovely falling melodies of the vocals, which get a touch up from labelmates the Beths. Their new LP Modern Fiction will be out on October 1st via Carpark Records.

Dean Wareham Announces I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of LA

It’s been a little shy of a decade since Dean Wareham released some solo material, but just as his former bandmates returned to the fold this year, so too comes Dean with today’s announcement of I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of LA. But, despite some great arrangements that join Dean at the 41 second mark, this song feels really stripped down, almost like early Dylan-esque. There’s definitely something cinematic, too, that creeps into this song, be it the black and white imagery, occasionally blurry here and there, or the track’s general expansive feel, like an old Western with that deep throated narrator. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the album was recorded with Jason Quever (Papercuts), who creates a lot of wonderful tunes on his own right…so I’m all in here. The LP will be out on October 15th via Double Feature Records.

Good Rocker from Zozo Ginzburg

I always like to get a little fast start on Mondays, so it’s a good thing someone pointed me towards this great track from Zozo Ginzburg off the band’s latest album, Blue Mountains. I mean, if you press play, it sounds like a jangling version of Jay Reatard, with Zozo taking on some similar vocal approaches; the drum work also is very reminiscent of some of those late Jay tunes. You even get a great little guitar freak out in the end that kind of wraps the whole of the track up with this great emphatic guitar punch. If the Israeli outfit isn’t on your radar, maybe you should fix that.
