Great Earthquake Share I’m Hiding Behind a Mask Video

I first got turned onto Great Earthquake when Thinking & Making was released. I immediately fell in love with the songwriting, so when Organized Religious Sounds quietly dropped on Friday, I was rushing to listen to it. This great song is the perfect introduction to the record; it’s like this steady pop meditation on identity…do we want to be noticed or hide because its easier? The song’s unassuming, but I love that about it. It almost seems too subtle to be noticed, like hiding behind a mask…but there are these slight little tonal shifts the give the song its natural little charm. If you’re looking to spend some time today, you should probably stream all of Organized Religious Sounds, out now via Lost and Lonesome.

Rock Out with Heavy Lag

Brooklyn’s Heavy Lag aren’t signed to Dirtnap Records, but if you’re a fan of that label and its brand of furious pop punk, then you’re going to love this bunch! They rock forward almost immediately, blasting with some heavy riffs at breakneck speed. Of course, the vocals seem like they’re screamed atop the whole of the song, kind of like they’re crowdsurfing through the tune itself. And just like that, 2 minutes have blasted right through your speakers, you’ve punched danced across your living room with your 2 year old…wait, maybe that’s just me?! Whatever, this rips and you need it!

American Watercolor Movement Share Single

Having mostly been quiet for the decade, New Jersey outfit American Watercolor Movement have since begun releasing a collection of unreleased material titled Rooftops, Rifles and Honey (there’s 3 volumes!). Listening through these releases, it seems that the collection really had something unique they were working on, at least to my ears. There’s this natural pop sensibility, something you might have heard in early Arcade Fire or even Broken Social Scene. But, I’ve also found this unique sort of post-emo feel to certain bits, with guitar lines feuding and drums rolling in and out as vocals overlap one another. Just imagine if ATDI had wanted to sound gorgeous! Just been super into this track today.

Luna Keller Shares Prophecy

As of late, the majority of my listening habits have delved into the indiepop realm, but I still fawn over a great melodic ballad, like this track from Luna Keller. I loved the song and its bare presentation at the beginning, drawing you into the vocals as strings resonate in your speakers. Still, what made this one stand out was when those little vocal flourishes raised up Keller’s voice in the front of the mix. And even then, the song still had a final change, adding in some light percussion to cement the song’s memorable quality! Just another in a string of great singles from the songwriter this year!

Stretch Panic Announce Glitter & Gore

Our friends in Stretch Panic have great news for you; they’re finally going to release their debut, Glitter & Gore; you might remember our adoration for their “Ouija Boy” tune on this year’s Slack Capital 3. They’re still out here jamming infectious pop rock ditties with themes of vampires and ghouls, but don’t let that fool you, as MJ Haha says the song begs us to ask “Am I in a toxic relationship;” those can drain your life blood just as much as any good old vampire. One thing that spills out of this song for sure are those damned hooks; they get you immediately…so if you like a little of the occult, dark humor and good old fashioned pop rock, then be sure to check this out!

Trs Oui Share New Video

Really quietly, Tres Oui dropped a few new songs this week, though these tunes have been in the work for some time. Luckily, one of those jams gets a nice little video treatment, featuring some live footage with Nate textured atop with various effects. The song itself is a great jam, with the vocals pushing this emphatic tone in just the right spots; it feels like its a story about maturation, but I won’t go throwing words in anyone’s mouth. It’s never a bad day at the office when this lot throws a a dreamy jangle our way…and besides this video you can also find another new tune, “Oh Guitar.” Listen, won’t you?

Bumping New Track From The Ninth Wave

Glasgow based outfit The Ninth Wave truly came onto my musical radar during SXSW in 2019 when I interviewed them as part of our festival guide. Since that time, the band dropped their critically acclaimed debut album Infancy and released an EP entitled Happy Days! earlier this year. Staying ever busy, the band just released this banging new single today called “Everything Will be Fine”. If you were looking for a little Friday morning motivation, look no further, as this tune is full of fun energy, hope, and an overall danceable vibe. Hit play on this one and get your dance party started early.

Cool Sounds Announce Bystander

It seems like just yesterday that Aussie outfit Cool Sounds released More to Enjoy (or Sleepers EP), which was one of my 2019 favorite Aussie releases…but they’re back today with the announcement of Bystander, a new LP for 2021. It begins with almost a forlorn outlook, almost presented like a soft ballad with just these careful little vocal notes. But, keys start to bounce, just before the 1 minute mark; you can feel the ground swell of full band pop rock, and we’re so lucky when it hits. I love the guitar cutting a rug across the front of the mix, giving a little old school classic rock a nod…at least in my ear. The new LP will drop in February of next year…and I have a feeling it will be every bit as rewarding as this song here.

Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts Share Head North

I’ve been sitting on this song from Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts for a few weeks now, waiting to share it, and it feels like the perfect way to start off a Friday…the last Bandcamp Friday of the year! In the first minute or so, you get this soft pop vibe, perfect for cruising through immense landscapes and “heading North.” At the 1:30 mark, there’s a twist, a jump up if you will, just a brief moment in time for the duo to employ some really strong hooks that soar, blowing through the song like the breeze when your windows are down. This is definitely one of those songs that just stays with you all day long.

Have Another Jam From Yung

The entire ATH staff has truly embraced the young Danish band Yung over the last several years, having consumed everything they send our way. A testament to this fandom, Nathan shared a new album announcement from the band earlier this month, and also let go on a new single called “Above Water”. Well today I am climbing aboard the hype train of the new Yung album by releasing to the masses this slick new song, “Such a Man”. I’m continually stunned by this band’s ability to offer dashes of indie rock, but with this dark, post-punk, somewhat aggressive, and majorly in your face vibe. Dig on that.

Yung will release new album Ongoing Dispute on January 22nd via PNKSLM.
