Another Hit from Non La

Near the end of last year we heard the first tune from the Not in Love EP from Vancouver’s Non La; I was struck by the earnestness of the tune, but also how brazenly catchy the track was. Here’s another tune off said EP, equally hook-laden as the first tunes we heard. There’s just something freeing about everything DJ On is writing at the moment; I can just envision going to a show and bouncing up and down around the club, screaming at the top of my lungs along with everyone else in the room. These are sing-a-long hits that make you feel good about the world, so go ahead, make the world yours today. The whole EP is out on February 14th via KingfisherBluez/Lost Sound Tapes.

New Pop Tune from Tugboat Captain

I’ve written about Tugboat Captain previously, and with the London outfit scheduled to show up in Austin for SXSW, I thought it would be a nice time to check back in on the band. They’ve just offered up this new tune in demo fashion in hopes of raising some funds for their 3rd LP, as well as that trip across the sea. Personally, I’m not sure what else they could really add to make this more than a demo, aside from punching up a level here and there in the mix. I love the breakdown at the 3 minute mark; it’s the perfect way to cap off a promising tune. If you’re inclined to support the group, you can go HERE to throw a buck or two their way.

Melenas Share 3 Segundos Video

I was starting to get worried this week wouldn’t offer a whole lot of hits, then I remembered that Spanish quartet Melenas were dropping this great video from their forthcoming new album. This tune’s a jittery little rocker with this hook built in by way of backing vocals and a pounding drum beat that sets your toes tapping away furiously. There’s a middling section where the band flex their skill with a small psychedelic voyage before returning to the insatiable “ba ba ba” line that keeps ringing out in my head. Plus, if you haven’t met the band, you get a great introduction via the sitcom style presentation in the video. Their new album Dias Raros is out May 1st via Trouble in Mind Records!

Half Dream Share Celia Video

It’s Monday, so I don’t want to ruin your musical week, but you’re all going to love this brand new track from Half Dream; it’s going to keep getting played in your head all week…sorry about that. Paige Berry owns this song; her voice falls somewhere between Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten, mixing heavy tones with angelic sparkle that rises in the mix. I love how the band sets the song up, Berry and a few riffs riding through the Texas countryside before the drums drop in to thicken the mixture, adding in a natural hook to bury the song deep within your subconscious. This track appears on the band’s forthcoming Monster of Needing EP, which drops on April 2nd. Check Out Flat Earth

It’s been sparse on the music front, so I was checking out some of my favorite, most reliable labels, which is how I stumbled on the latest release from KingfisherBluez: Flat Earth. I think they’re best described as conspiracy punk; I mean the band name and lead single off their new EP should tell you enough. All the riffs are gritty and fun, and while I can hear the angst in the vocals, they don’t do enough to obscure a nice dosage of pop sensibility. I keep laughing at the line “everybody knows that quite a lot of dogs are secretly raccoons;” it gets me every damn time. They’re also selling Flat Earth globes with music on them (they look like CDs), so grab one!

European Sun Share the Future’s Female

Man, WIAIWYA is on an incredible roll these last few weeks; they just announced new Jeanines last week, and now we have European Sun. The band is comprised of Steve Miles and a bunch of friends, including the likes of Amelia Fletcher (Catenary Wires, Heavenly, etc) and Sarah Corrie (Velocette, Comet Gain). Unfortunately, the story behind the song’s first verse is a bit distressing, which Miles says he thought of while thinking upon his mother’s childhood; the message gets hidden beneath playfulness and dry humor, but the sentiment remains. For this reason, the John at WIAIWYA is sending folks to donate to Refuge, a center helping women and children fleeing domestic violence. Yet Another Jam From Monad

Well I think I’ve made it fairly clear that up and comers Monad from Tel Aviv are likely my new favorite band of 2020. We’ve shared a few songs already and today I’ve got yet another new one in the form of this track called “Dawn Chorus”. I am once again pleased to find some wonderful elements of a shoegaze style blended well with a more psych-pop vibe. One can even pick up a few hints of disco and R&B undertones which really create some special sounds here.

Seazoo Share Video for The Pleasure

When Seazoo graced us with their presence at our impromptu SXSW show last year, we had an absolute blast…and got to hear a few of the new jams that we’re thinking will show up on their forthcoming album Joy. For me, my infatuation with the band revolves around their combination of energetic riffs and cool pop structures. It’s like having your hooks and feeling soothed all at the same time, which is really what all us pop fans want anyways. This is a straight up bop, keeping it with our Friday theme of hits. The new LP drops on April 3rd via Big Terry.

Waves of Dread Share Deja Vu Single

It’s been a minute or so since Waves of Dread have shared anything new, but they’re back today with a brand new single, “Deja Vu.” Immediately, the song comes pounding in, smashing drums with fuzzy swirling through your speakers. But, more prominent is the band’s inclination to include some pop sensibility in this effort; it might just be the distant “ooh” in the chorus, but there’s surely an uplifting energy here. If you can’t hear it, just wait for the slowed little breakdown mid-track to hear what I’m hearing. I always enjoy what this bunch push out, so let’s hope we get more from the outfit in 2020!

Lisasinson Share Infectious Single, Atasco

This is going to be a hard pill for you to swallow, but I absolutely guarantee that the best song you’re going to hear today is this new jam from Spanish quartet Lisasinson. The first 40 seconds, I was sold, but also sort of on pins and needles wondering where would this song go? Little did I know it’d drop in and rock my socks off! I nearly jumped out of my chair and started flailing around the room; I’m old now so I just tapped my toes super hard. It’s scuzzy in all the right places, and filled to the brim with melodies you can’t get out of your head, no matter how hard you try. Their new single is out today via Elefant, and I’ll probably listen to it another twelve or thirteen times before I even post this.
