With the vinyl release of the Lucksmiths Naturaliste last month, it had me wondering, who is best suited to fill that void in my life? Seems like Dropkick are the perfect band to fill that void, especially with what we’ve heard from the forthcoming The Scenic Route. This new single is filled with understated jangle, just playfully crafting a warm melody that perfectly aligns with the delivery of the vocal lines. I love the vocal in the chorus; it feels like its sweeping down from above to carry you away in this blanket of blissful harmony. The new LP will be out on February 7th via Bobo Integral.

Dead Stars Announce Never Not Here

We’ve been writing about Dead Stars almost as long as we’ve been running this site, which says more about the band than it does about us. Today, they share a brand new single with fresh news of a new LP on the February horizon. In true Dead Stars fashion, it’s just a huge guitar pop rocker, balancing heavy riffs with the melodic nature of the band’s vocals; they’ve always sort of walked this tightrope between reimagined grunge and power-pop, in the best way possible. They’re just one of those bands that makes you want to turn the volume way up and hit the road with nothing but the wind at your back. Never Not Here will be out on February 21st.

While the Media claim Austin as their home base, this is an example of finding a pure gem in your own backyard. Honestly, the opening number is worthy of your time and energy…immediately. It has this delicate nature, this fragility like the song’s shattering in your hands that’s absolutely stunning. The song’s got this slide guitar fading away, leaving the strumming guitar far off, eventually leaving it isolated with the vocals. That voice takes on sort of this folk meets bedroom pop; it feels pained, but like that’s been accepted and welcomed…and luckily shared with us all. Globalist Blues is out now for NYoP, but had to share this stunning opener.

A Night At Free Week 2020

Nathan went out Thursday, I went out Saturday. We both got a dose of ATH Records goodness.

For me, catching Big Bill for the last time in their current form was of paramount importance. Sure there were several other great lineups, but drummer Alan Lauer is leaving our fine city. His wife is, too, and she makes amazing cookies so they brought cookies and they were delicious. The jams flowed. It ended up being a packed, raucous set with local celebs, plenty of shenanigans like jumping jacks, praying to the Hotel IndiGod and a pit during “What do you want on your salad?”…

Along for the ride was Exercise, Borzoi, Blood and Son of Stan. I also said hi to some folks next door at Mohawk. Click through for the big gallery…

No Museums Return with Moths

How is it that some bands get all the accolades and popularity, yet there are tons of working bands putting out brilliant release after brilliant release, and it seems like its only me listening over here. No Museums are one such band, occupying the larger indie rock space, though they’ve been mostly doing it on their own terms through their high albums. On Moths, their second LP this year, they draw on various sounds that have my ears alert…like the Blank Dogs (ish) Local Cold or the GBV style of “Things I Have Hidden.” On the latter, the sonics get drawn out into that tundra of negative space, filling it with chugging guitars and stomping rhythm, something you generally find in the works of a Gedge-penned number. Bits and pieces for everyone to love, and ultimately, another well rounded release from this Edmonton outfit.

ThunderStars Share New Single

This debut effort from Austin outfit ThunderStars has me spaced out in the best sense; I find that the song employs great usage of time, drawing out the edges of the tune in the best way, so as to let the song slowly craft its own path. The vocal seem to lurk just beneath the surface of the mix, almost daring you to dive beneath and see what will unfold. It feels extremely dense, and yet sparse at the same time; I guess it’s heavy without ever actually being heavy. The group are set to release Number Stations this Friday via Mariel Recording Company.

Pia Fraus Announce Empty Parks

In late November we brought you a fresh track from our favorite Estonians, Pia Fraus; and while we were gone, the band shared another great track from their forthcoming Empty Parks LP. While there’s definitely a frayed fuzz to this tune, the song’s natural propulsion via the rhythm section seems to obscure that factor, building on the toe-tapping joy of pop music. Eve joins Rein on the vocals for this number, melding their voices harmoniously, which allows them to hone in on their melodic tendencies, maximizing the emotional attraction we all seek in our pop tunes. Empty Parks will be released on January 20th via Seksound Record Label.

Did You Listen to Dummy?

There was tons of music passed over during our little hiatus, but one that I was really looking forward to sharing was this delightful track from Dummy (featuring members of Wildhoney). It’s a five second wait before the band reveal their pop-heavy sounded; I love the way the “ba-ba” backing vocals are almost used as their own pop instrument rather than just a vocal. The main vocal sits back coolly in the mix, kind of hanging out while the fuzz swarms and pulses in and out of your eardrums; the song’s filled with all these little layers and textures you’ll keep coming back to sample each bit. It’s the sort of ear candy that builds the anticipation for a future release, which we’re told is slated for later this year.

After a promising close to 2016 with a couple of singles we loved, Chicago based The Hazy Seas finally delivered us a much anticipated new single last month. Much to our surprise, the band sent over this new single called “Old Clothes” over the Winter Break season and I’m pleased to share it with you today. As usual, the band’s name once again offers a perfect description of their music with this one again being seriously hazy while still offering some weird pop elements to keep the listener engaged. Could the band’s upcoming LP be one of our first favorites of the year?

Strawberry Generation Share Recollections EP

Rhode Island outfit Strawberry Generation have been hanging around, at least to our knowledge, for several years, with a handful of EPs to their name. Today, the band are out to share their Recollections EP for Sunday Records; it collects remixed and remastered versions of early tunes, as well as throwing in a brand new track to tease what’s coming from the band’s debut LP (out later this year!). For those unfamiliar with the group, you’ll find the band a multi-headed indiepop outfit, capable of charming with understated melodic gems like the below “(My Love is Like A) Satellite” or punchy pop numbers like “Coffee.” Listening through, you’ll notice they switch up vocalists quite often, which builds in a diversity not always present in the genre. New tune “Kitchen+ Crisis” is the slow blossoming pop sort, billowing with backing harmonies and some lush arrangements. Grab the EP now from Sunday Records, and look for the full length debut come this Spring!
