As the year winds to a close, coverage wise, I’m still turning over these tunes I’ve had lurking in my inbox; the tunes I loved but just never quite got to in that moment…such is this track from Chris Rovik. I was drawn to the vocals; they had this vibe that made you feel haunted in the best way, drew you into the song’s cavernous construction. When the voice sort of rises, it’s a freeing moment, allowing the track to venture into this more cathartic territory…tied to the song’s themes of love that got away. Start your day here.

Field Music Share Another Tune

I feel like I always take a good Field Music jam for granted, but I just got hooked on this brand new single shared today. There’s something that sort of sounds like it’s got a Byrne influence, all the way from the jagged guitar riffs to the way the vocals come across in the mix. Plus, one thing we all love about Byrne (and the TH for that matter) is the inevitable hook that comes in the lyrics; here you get the line of “money money money is a memory” to secure that same memorable moment in the tune. Making a New World is out on January 10th via Memphis Industries.

Nada Surf Announce Never Not Together

Throughout my various twists and turns as a music fan, there have always been a handful of bands that have remained staples in my listening rotation, and Nada Surf has always been one such act. Today they announce that they’re back with a brand new album, and the opening single has that melodic guitar buzz that’s been there going on 30 years; it’s balanced by Matthew’s voice, giving the song that emotive softness. They do switch it up to offer a spoken word moment at the song’s forefront just before the 2 minute mark; it offers the band’s critique on the state of the world and how we can participate to make it better for all of us. Hooks and a message? Never Not Together is out on February 7th via Barsuk.

New Music from Hurt Valley

You ever come across one of those tunes that sort of makes you look out the window and just sort of think back on the whole of your life? Well, if so, then perhaps you’ll understand the nostalgic feelings that flow from this new Hurt Valley track. Something in the song just feels like an eternity that I’d willing live over and over again, like they’ve tapped into my own consciousness; it has something to do with the way the vocals were recorded, part whisper part friendly fireside chat. This new track will appear on Glacial Pace, the new LP out on December 6th via Woodsist.

Mellow Number From Sipper

Sipper is the new musical project from New York based artist Joe Beerman. Having already released the acclaimed debut EP Adam Driver earlier this year, it appears Beerman is not ready to settle into cruise control on one success story. Today he is returning with this new single called “Ghost”. This one is a layered piece of instrumentation that seems mellow at first, but continues to unravel new layers of driving pop sounds. We have ourselves a hit on our hands here folks.

Bright New Tune From Stray Fossa

The sun is out in Austin and I was looking this morning for some tuneage to match the bright and sunny mood here. Today I need look no further than my new amigos in Charlottesville based band Stray Fossa and their new single “It’s Nothing”. It reminds me a bit of my old pals in Grand Archives if they added some dreamy, pop elements to their sound. Clearly this band has taken a bit of a dated, overdone genre and taken it into a new avenue with a refreshing, bright and airy style.

Seattle’s Night Hikes are new on my radar, though I’ve now got my ear focused on the act going forward. They’ve just dropped their new album Chalice, and in order to get you caught up in the storm, I thought I’d share one of my favorite tunes from the LP with you. It’s an atmosphere of dreaminess, with sharp guitar notes hinting at a positive energy flowing through the core, which leaves the space for Olivia Goodby’s vocals.Her vocals are the central force, serving as the glue that holds the whole tune together as things jangle and churn behind her, adding a calm melodic touch to it all. Pleased to Meet You: CLAMM

It’s always good to follow your friends, as they’ll always turn you onto something good, which happened to me with CLAMM. It might not be the first thing that pops into your head when you hear Melbourne, but the young trio offers up this riotous rocker that punishes from out the gates. Drums start pounding amidst this nervous wall of feedback, then meet the stalking of the lyrics, almost as if we’re being circled by this dangerous force about to tear through our ears. The group are set to release their debut Beseech Me in January.

Mo Troper Announce Natural Beauty

I’ve been completely onboard with the first two Mo Troper LPs, so it only seems fitting to jump on board with his new one Natural Beauty, just announced on Friday. It’s clear through his growth that Mo’s intent upon banging out hook-laden pop songs, not too far off from where the early works of the New Pornographers dwelled. Even then, some of Troper’s devein-may-care attitude from his early days seeps through, which ends up sort of leaving you with this fuzzy guitar pop stomp that you’ll have spinning in your head for hours. Natural Beauty will be released by Tender Loving Empire on February 14th.

Pure Beauty From Pure Moods

It’s Friday afternoon and I can’t imagine a better time for some fantastic tunes to take into your weekend. Today our weekend vibe tune comes by was of Melbourne based artist Pure Moods and the new single “Tide”. This one has an absolutely lovely grooving vibe with some slacker rock tendencies and some bright guitar numbers. It’s my favorite song of the week.

Pure Moods will release new album Upward Spiral on November 29th via Tear Jerk Records.
