Killer New Track From Wilding

Having been damn near 5 years since we last heard from our Melbourne friend Wilding, I was quite excited to receive some new music from him a few days ago. His latest effort, “Speed King of the Commonwealth” is more of a loud, indie rock pop song worthy of dancing and head banging. It reminds me of early singles from Kaiser Chiefs with it’s chant inducing “la la las” and breezy guitar sound. This song is out now on all formats via Half Cow Records.

Only the beginning, Wilding is currently hard at work on his third album entitled The Death of Foley’s Mall coming sometime later this year.

Electro Pop From Vola Tila

While not always my personal style of music, I can always appreciate some electronic pop with a solid beat and driving sound. If you can get behind the style as well, I suggest you check out this banging new track called “Turn Back Time” From Swedish based duo Vola Tila. It reminds me of Drive soundtrack music from Cliff Martinez made more accessible with dark, electronic elements of bands like The XX. I am already looking forward to jamming this one as I drive around town today while pumping my fist in the air.

Vola Tila will be releasing their deput EP Personality Apocalypse in the next few months.

The Sour Notes Share New Single

The Sour Notes, always adventurous, have decided they’re going to release their new album one 7″ at a time, and today we’ve got the latest single from the series for you to enjoy. This one should come as no surprise if you listened to their ambitious collection This Is Not Our Music; I mean, if you don’t hear Galaxie 500 in here, I don’t know what you’re thinking. I love the softness of Jared’s voice on this, matched up against the heavy riffs that sort of billow in and out of the mix. It’s the sort of slow churning pop music you wish they had at your middle school dance, so you could fall in love and feel totally cool while doing it. Austin folks can get their hand on the new 7″ on June 13th at Hotel Vegas for the release show!

Moist Flesh Release Total Erosion of Meaning

Remember when we released David Israel’s The Year That Felt Like Two? Well, the drummer for that project (Julia [Gulia] Hungerford)is also the drummer behind this gorgeous new Moist Flesh. For starters, Johnny Hillbun’s voice is flooring me as I listen back through it; at times it has this deep operatic tone, while I can also hear this slow churning country sound. Musically, it’s a contemplative album, allowing you plenty of space to let your mind wander, hanging on Hillbun’s notes or those guitar lines that dangle at the end of the world. It’s this broad-sweeping brilliant pop album, the sort I can just feel that Austin will overlook, so here’s to hoping some of you outside our bubble fall in love with Total Erosion of Meaning.

As Night Moves prepare to release their new album Can You Really Find Me later this month, the band is dropping more new music in anticipation. Today the boys sent over this new track “Recollections” which is more of a mellow, slow grooving song when compared to previously released banger “Strands Align”. The track is helping to set up what will surely be on the best, and most well balanced albums of the year.

Can You Really Find Me hits streets on June 28th via Domino.

Christian Paul Philippi Shares Oahu 97

LA based Christian Paul Philippi caught me completely by surprise; I didn’t know anything about the songwriter other than he has an LP coming out on Forged Artifacts in late June. A few rounds of listening and its clear that we’ve got a new pop balladeer to fawn over; Philippi offers this natural softness in his voice, like he’s singing you to sleep. Behind that voice he’s textured the track with layered guitars, some strumming and some shooting off like stars in the distant night sky…it’s even closed out with this sort of brilliant ambiance. Strangely, the song leaves you feeling satisfied, charmed, which works in contrast with the thematic element of the lyrics. Grab a little joy here; Gem will be out June 28th via FA.

Another Pop Gem from Azure Blue

The hot streak that Tobias has been on with his Azure Blue project just keeps on rolling forward. This track, off his forthcoming LP, hits hard almost immediately, darkly pulsing with synth work once you press play. But, then things get pulled back just a hint, allowing for Isaksson to lay on his thick blanket of pop crooning atop the song. Listening through, I think I like, more and more, the fact that the chorus is barely discernible; there’s a little bit of a twist on the percussive beat, but overall, everything blends together so seamlessly that you’re just washed over by this charming tune. DD Island Shares Sawtooth Sunshine

I don’t really know how to describe Nashville songwriter D.D. Island other than to say that his music is really, really good. Even with that praise, it’s hard to define his sound; it takes on elements of current dream pop, but also looks nostalgically upon groups such as Galaxie 500. It seems sort of down-trodden and forlorn, though there are these bright little guitar lines that pop in the mix adding just a glimmer of hope to the listener. There’s even a breakdown of sorts in the song’s latter half, giving hope via the lyrics. If you’re into it, his debut full-length Lost Dog drops this weekend.

Possible Humans Announce Everybody Split ReIssue

Okay, so maybe this Possible Humans isn’t exactly a reissue, per se, but maybe just a world-wide release so you can all enjoy what those 200 folks over in Australia were able to get their hands on back in April. Everybody Split garnered raves from P4k, and of course, ever with a finger on the Aussie pulse, Trouble in Mind jumped on board to give the band’s debut a broader release. All that leads us to the track below; it’s different than say your Twerps or your RBCF, at least here. Weirdly, this track sounds an awful lot like what GBV would sound like if they found/wanted a proper studio recording; the chords (both guitar and vocals) sound worn out, like their on their last breath. That modest pace builds the tension, allowing for the song’s latter half to really let the guitars/vocals free, taking off on their own before returning home. If you have this LP, you’re lucky, but if not, TiM has you covered on August 2nd.

Beautiful Tune from Jordan Moser

It’s kinda rainy here in Austin, and been sort of a shit morning, so it was nice to hear a stunning new number from one of our own, Jordan Moser. Jordan’s got a really striking voice, at times has that smokiness of M. Ward, but it has this ability take that then suddenly stretch it to more angelic tones when necessary; it doesn’t help that the wonderful Molly Burch is back there providing backing vocals. Musically, I think there this brilliance in the sort of understated nature of the whole thing; the drums are steady, but never rocking, while the guitar sort of courses in and out on its own journey. It all leaves this empty space that allows Moser and Burch to drop their vocals inside your ear channels. Long Night will be out in July courtesy of Keeled Scales.
