Wand Announce Double Album

How does Wand keep growing and evolving, all the while still sounding wholly incredible? As they announce their new double LP, Laughing Matter, it comes with this wondrous new single. It begins by teasing you with this measured guitar line over piano and drums, all before Cory even enters the picture just after the 1 minute mark. Once he makes his vocal appearance, backed by Sofia in the distance, the song takes on a more elegant tone…like a far less pretentious Radiohead; it’s accessible, yet still relies upon the musicianship that’s made the band so powerful over the last few years. It’s a musical adventure, and we should all welcome that. Look for the new LP via Drag City on April 19th.

New Music from Made-Up

Imagine that you took bands like the Clientele, Animal Collective and Elvis Depressedly…then throw it in a blender and see how fucking beautiful the world could be…that’s what this new track from Made-Up sounds like to me. It has this warped, warm coating that intoxicates the listener, while still making nods to our love of pop sensibility. Still, it has this natural intimacy that lends itself to the vibe we often get with bedroom recordings; it’s sort of the perfect blend of all your favorite things, allowing you, encouraging you, to get swept away in the world. Look for the Made-Up EP, out March 8th via Forged Artifacts.

A New Single from Quin Galavis

I think if you go back and listen to some of the Dead Space tracks from long ago, you’d hear that Quin Galavis always had a penchant for pop hooks; that’s pretty evident even on his newest work. There’s this fuzzy churn of guitars from the get-go serving as the driving force behind this number. He really pushed himself on the vocals, in a different manner than we’ve seen previously; it almost has this howling prog vibe in the way it stretches to reach those high notes. I just always appreciate how you can’t really define his music; he’s always got something different cooking. This track appears on Victim/Non-Victim Pt. 1, out February 15th via Super Secret Records.

New Jam from La Fille

While the Pacific Northwest has always been a hotbed of great music, I feel as if Seattle has been picking up the Portland slack as of late; lump La Fille in as just another hit-making pop act. Just recently the group dropped this crunchy pop tune, part college-rock and part power-pop; it probably doesn’t hurt that Michael Lerner of Telekinesis recorded the act. If you’re looking for an afternoon pick-me-up, then you’ll feel right at home with this cranked up loud in your stereo…just beware of those huge hooks. The band release Alright Already March 15th.

Marijuana Sweet Tooth Share New Single

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything from Austin’s Marijuana Sweet Tooth, but they slink back into the music scene as if they’ve never missed a beat. They offer up some desert imagery on the single’s cover, and they ride off into the horizon on the back of a dark-tinged Americana. Vocals are traded between male and female counterparts, as guitar chords bend behind in the mix, softly accented by light percussion. It’s a welcome return in my book, and one that I hope comes with the promise of more new music in the very near future. Until then folks…

Sometimes you’ve got to slide into the week, and I can’t really think of a way to do that better than encouraging you to listen to that Lens Mozer album that just dropped Friday. The album definitely has some upbeat vibes, though I love how they’re sort of subdued behind this haziness, like in “Sometimes.” You’ll also find these delightful slow burners such as “Such a Drag,” which really reminds me a lot of Papercuts, crafting this haunting pop vibe. Don’t Stop feels like a collection of really huge bedroom pop sounds, as if they were knowingly written to reach out into the galaxy to make everyone’s lives better.

Brand New Daniel Francis Doyle and the Dreams

Daniel Francis Doyle has been one of my favorite Austin musicians for quite some time. He’s always been a unique part of the fabric of this town, whether that’s his looped projects, his bass in Deep Time or his current project Daniel Francis Doyle and the Dreams. Today’s shared single opens with ambient noise, like the onslaught of the tides washing upon the shore. But, at the 40 second mark, the song turns into a pulsating ditty where synths and guitars dance about your ears as Doyle delivers his vocals; I love the way he seems to let his voice rise and fall, depending on the emphasis of the note/lyric…like the stop right before the 2 minute mark. It’s too arty for dance music, but too good to ignore. Look for Unrecognizable on February 15th via Self Sabotage Records.

Bright and Sunny Indie Rock For Friday From Photo-Ops

Most of the country is cold and frozen, but in the ATX all we have is a little bit of gray skies and some rain on this Friday. Wherever you may be, we’re getting to that stretch of winter where we’re itching for March, ready to shed those jackets and get out in the sunshine. We are pretty blessed in Austin to get to experience that year round, but until it’s bright and shiny again here, I’m going to just push repeat on this track from Photo-Ops, as it’s almost four minutes of pure bliss. Photo-Ops is the moniker LA based singer/songwriter, Terry Price, who has been making alt-folk tunes for some time now. The biggest change in this new sound is the pivot to rock and Price’s vocals are like a splash of cold water on a hot day in, well, July. It’s difficult not to be drawn back to this track over and over, so give into the warmth and jam right along.

We in Austin are lucky, as Photo-Ops will be making their way to 3Ten ACL Live to play alongside Tracyanne and Danny, so get ready to boogie with them on Feb 8.

 

New Single from The Leisure Society

It seems that all your favorite musicians love the Leisure Society, from Eno to Davies, so may as well join in the fun, right? The group, have just announced an ambitious double LP, with Nick Hemming spurred into songwriting mode as he came to terms with a break-up. The song seems to mimic the band’s name, taking a leisurely pop stroll right through your speakers, with the crunchy distorted riffs muted in the background behind Hemmings voice. For me, the string arrangements add to the song’s magnificence, building this emotional underbelly you can’t hide from; hats off to ambitious pop music. The album, Arrivals & Departures will drop on April 12th.

Elva Announce Debut LP

There’s been whispers of an Elva full-length ever since they dropped their first single, but they’ve picked up over the last month…and that time is apparently near. The group, featuring former members of Allo Darlin and Making Marks, have announced Winter Sun via Tapete Records. At this point, we’re only getting snippets, but they’re lengthy snippets, so it warrants a post…not to mention it’s always wonderful to hear Elizabeth Morris voice coming through my speakers. It looks like she and Ola will be trading vocal duties for the band’s forthcoming release, or at least that’s what we get here in these teasers. So for now, just over 4 minutes to show you how wonderful Elva can be…and then we wait until April!
