Austin Spotlight: Xetas Break Out

XetasHonestly, there wasn’t an Austin label that kicked as much ass in 2014 as 12XU…they had three of our Top 10 Austin LPs.  So, anytime the label offers something you’ve gotta take note, especially when it comes to local act Xetas.  If you’ve caught their live set then you’ve probably been warned, but this single from their upcoming The Redeemer LP is one of those tracks that manages to capture the band’s live fury, whilst still boasting of solid production value. It’s a track with a  breakneck pace, with slaughtering guitar riffs that cut through your speakers. I figure there’s only a matter of time before a band with such tenacity and killer licks breaks into the consciousness beyond Austin. Look for the LP in stores at the end of February.

New Tune from Obnox

Obnox_BoogalouReedI’ll admit, I was a little late to the Obnox discovery; I got turned on via the band’s Louder Space LP (12XU).  But, that being said, and accepting my faults, I’ve come to appreciate the work of Lamont Thomas as one of the more gratifying discoveries, for me, in the last few years.  He creates this wall of noise that probably gets dumped in the trash pile of garage rock, but there’s a much more classic sound of straight ahead rock music here, with vocal touches that grab listeners, pulling them into a world of noisy enjoyment. Look for the new album, Boogalou Reed, on January 27th via 12XU.

Flesh Lights – Free Yourself

10658972_727475723954210_6969944611352798152_oRating: ★★★★½

Modern punk rock seems to have gotten a bit stale, in my opinion.  You get tons of reverb on the vocals, you get guitar riffs galore, but you never get a band that embodies everything, until you listen to the new Flesh Lights record.  Listeners will find songs that are brash in parts, or tracks filled with arena rock riffs, but most impressive is that Free Yourself shows true musicianship.

You couldn’t ask for a better opening track than “Just About Due.”  It’s a power pop gem filled with this huge guitar stomp that really emphasizes the band’s skills with their respective instruments.  Every riff begs you to pump your fist, and I’m in love with the solo that breaks through briefly near the end, not to mention the growl of the vocal.  Such a tune would fit perfectly alongside “I Wait,” if we were to look at modern album structures, but the band holds off on offering that hit until later in Free Yourself.  The lead guitar works its way through a great mini-solo, but the chorus is best appreciated by people screaming at the top of their lungs with their best set of buds.

Still, this isn’t a power-pop record; it’s a record of great rock songs.  Flesh Lights kick you in the teeth with tracks like “Middle Age” and “We Go Off.”  The former takes a knock at middle-aged wannabes and hangers-on, all the while rocking things with a swagger all their own.  Can’t believe these guys are calling me out!  “We Go Off” is perhaps one of the record’s most dangerous moments, knifing it’s way through your speakers with these jagged guitar riffs and a ferocious vocal that nears going off the tracks.  There’s a stuttering approach that sort of reminds me of the stylings you’d find on an ALL album; just listen through this track to hear the band’s talent.

One of my favorite tracks, “Time Thief” seemingly comes off like an outlier, jamming out in a semi-Ted Leo fashion, at least in regards to the vocal delivery.  But, in the spectrum of the album, it fits in perfectly, displaying the band’s willingness to fill Free Yourself with nothing but their twelve best recorded songs.  Honestly, you can’t throw a single song on this album to the side; every single song is great in its own right, so sticking them all together in perfect order is yet another reason while Flesh Lights should be considered by all as a band at top of their game.

Austin Spotlight: Another Flesh Lights Tune

fleshlightsOur first listen to the newest work of Flesh Lights (Just About Due) had this striking power pop sound that definitely grabbed our attention.  But, their new single, “Middle Age” is a blistering tune, both in its sonic quality and it’s verbal attack on “middle age youth.”    The guitar work here is sublime, especially when the solos blast through your speakers; I’m also partial to the call and response vocals that come through the chorus.  If you’re looking for a rock n’ roll record that never stays in one place, then you better get your hands on Free Yourself; it hits streets on November 4th via 12XU. Seriously. You’ll hate yourself if you don’t buy this LP.

Austin Spotlight: Jonly Bonly Back with New Tunes

jbSeems like a rad day for Austin bands, as we get to hear the first official single from Jonly Bonly today after earlier rocking out to Spray Paint.  We’ve talked about JB before as the project of Jason Smith (OBN iiis), with friends Stephen and Marley filling out the sound. They’re releasing their debut album, Put Together, on September 9th via 12XU, and I have a feeling it’s going to be one of my favorite records of the year.  If you’ve met Jason, you’re likely to note that he’s got some of the most eclectic tastes around town, and while there’s a bit of a Wire feel in the opening lines, the warmth of his guitar playing definitely takes the song further away from that sound.  I’m excited to hear what the entire record sounds like…hopefully you are too.

ATH Interview: Sweet Talk

sweet talk bannerThe Austin Music Blogger Awards is less than a week away, so we’ve got a few more interviews to help you get to know your local artists.  This time I caught up with my friend Stephen Svacina from Sweet Talk; his band is nominated for Best EP with their Flash of Light EP (12XU).  Stephen’s a good dude, and in one of Austin’s great pop-punk bands (just don’t tell him that or he’ll threaten you with pyrotechnic violence). Don’t forget to pick up one of the few tickets remaining HERE, and join us February 27th for the festivities.

Austin Spotlight: Ghetto Ghouls Get Noisy

ghettoghoulsWhile there’s a certain amount of classic indie pop coursing through our veins in Austin, our city is also known for it’s grittier side; you don’t have to look far to find a band slanging straight up rock n’ roll with no pretense.  One of those acts who’ve been on the rise is Ghetto Ghouls; they’ve been around for awhile impressing the locals with their aggressive sets.  They’ve just signed on with Monofonuss Press to release their self-titled album in April, with a another 7″ coming out via 12XU at some point during the Spring.  Seems like these guys are only going to continue making waves in Austin, and hopefully beyond our city walls. Turn it up and take a listen.

Austin Spotlight: Sweet Talk Offer New Jam

sweettalkI spend a lot of my time at record stores, and one of my favorite clerks has to be my buddy Steven; he just happens to also rock in a rad local band named Sweet Talk.  Earlier in the year the band released Pickup Lines, which is a necessity for locals…and beyond!  The group is about ready to release a new EP titled Flash of Light, which comes out next week, so you can preview one of the tunes right now!  Apparently the EP is being released by 12XU, home of Gerard Cosloy; he’s a big deal, or so I heard. Anyways this is a good jam to mix up my indiepop rotation for the day; it’s gritty, poppy and totally worth your time.
