Humpday Austin Shows: Our Austin Show Preview Spotlight

The great thing about our fair city is that with all the huge traveling shows drawing people out, we can also sneak off to our favorite venues to catch a lot of the great local acts. And, for those of you out on the town already…you’ve had a few drinks so far, so you may as well go the extra mile and catch one of these three suggested shows below. I promise you won’t be disappointed in your night. Check out these gigs:

Think No Think, A. Sinclair, Lowen @ Mohawk – 9 PM – Free if you’re already at the Future Islands gig.

A Giant Dog, The Stuffies, Trustees, DJ Andrew McCalla @ Hotel Vegas – 9 PM – Not a single bad band on this bill.

Tele Novella, The Sour Notes @ Stubbs – 10 PM – It’s a free show following the modern day version of Wilson Phillips, Haim.

Austin Spotlight: Weekend Show Suggestions

Looks like we’re in for a nice weekend, weather-wise, so that makes things perfect for a venture out to some of our great local venues to catch a show, or maybe even two. The 2014 Austin Music Blogger Awards

It was a great event. We were proud to be a part of it.

I have a list of winners and so many photos. Orthy sounded great, buoyed by Ian and Jeramy’s win for best DJs as Learning Secrets. Shivery Shakes ripped after their win for “Sidewalk Talk”. Jess was charming and haunting as ever, congrats. A Giant Dog stole the show with their set, while Mirror Travel may have given some voters buyer’s remorse. Magna Carda is hip-hop in Austin; go see them.

Announcing the Austin Music Blogger Awards – February 27, 2014

We’ve kept this a secret long enough! We’re here to announce the Austin Music Blogger Awards! This event has been carefully coordinated through the hard work of your local Austin Blogger Community: Austin Town Hall, Red River Noise, Ultra 8201, Side One Track One, Austin Bloggy Limits, Pop Press International, OVRLD, and Republic of Austin. We’re working with the excellent folks at Austin Music People, who’ll be running the show with the help of Fender. Not only will there be awards, but also rad bands to play all night long.

Here’s the details:

The doors will open at 7:30 PM on February 27th at SpiderHouse Ballroom. Bands will start at 8:30, with awards in between.

We’ll have Jess Williamson, Magna Carda, Shivery Shakes, Orthy, Mirror Travel, A Giant Dog + a Special Guest.

Austin Music People will present awards for behind the scenes folks such as Best Recording Studio and Best Poster Design. The Bloggers will present awards ranging from Best Band to Best DJ. You can read a full list of the awards and nominees HERE.

And, because we know that YOUR voice is just as important as ours, we want you to help us select our Readers Choice Austin Album of 2013. Cast your vote right HERE. Votes must be submitted by 5 PM on Friday, February 21st.

A lot of the folks in Austin filled their quota for January rock shows during Free Week, but in case you didn’t get your fill, there are some rad shows happening around town, including a few bands throwing an old school house party for your pleasure. Man. Austin had a pretty incredible year; it was a far better year than I’ve encountered recently, making my ears, mind and heart quite proud of our hometown. While it’s obviously difficult to get in on every single band in Austin, I made a list of the albums that were most impactful throughout the year, 2013. I purposefully left off EPs and singles, not because I didn’t enjoy those, but because this is a list of top ALBUMS! Show Review: Mikal Cronin @ Mohawk (6.27)

Sure, we knew it was going to be a sweat night, with temperatures still bordering on 100 when the bands took the stage at The Mohawk, but how hot would it get? Real hot. Sweat from bands, sweat from fans and sweat from our drinks. Regardless, the rock must go on, and rock it did. A Giant Dog, Shannon and the Clams and Mikal Cronin get commendations for valor in the face of hair dryer air.

Many of you know Mikal Cronin as one of the guys that makes Ty Segall sound so incredible live, but the guy’s been putting out music with various outfits, not to mention his own solo work. Recently, he released MCII, and I guarantee you that the album will end up on year end lists. But, there’s two incredible openers that need your support. Shannon and the Clams have been doing their own soulful garage rock for quite some time, always bringing the energy live. Finally, be there by 8 to catch local band A Giant Dog, who feature members of OBN IIIs and Bobby Jealousy…that alone should be enough to get you out. Plus, if you stay around afterwards you can catch local boys Sweet Talk and Act Rights.

Old Jam from The Best

I’m posting this jam from The Best just because, well, I can–you need to hear it. I feel like Austin, and beyond, haven’t had a great chance to fall in love with this band, although the varying parts of the group have definitely had their share of adoring press. Take members of OBN IIIs, A Giant Dog, Bad Lovers, Flesh Lights and basically any other band that kicks ass…throw them together and you expect big things. The Black Triangle 7″ came out last year, but there’s still a few floating about, so take a second to check out Twistworthy Records and get your hands on the goods.

Austin Free Week: Friday Night Highlights
