Parker Longbough Shares Burbank Safari

Parker Longbough is a band, not a person. In the end, that doesn’t matter much, as what matters is the quality of the band’s songwriting behind leader Matthew Witthoeft. While the style might leans towards lo-fi tendencies, the band don’t shy away from building their sound with this blessing production. It might be one of the more rocking tracks I remember from the group, with the guitars harkening to a slight Hammond Jr’ inflection; the softness in Witthoeft’s voice here does remind me faintly of Jens Lekman, which is never a bad comparison. Green and Gold/Drink the Hemlock, the band’s latest LP, will be out on November 22nd.

Stream Alaska from Ultim Cavall

It’s Friday, and people are all about those streams, but I want you to be all about those pop songs; the kind that instinctively make you swoon, like the entire LP from Ultim Cavall. I’ve given you a few of these tunes already, and I know that the non-English lyrical content is a bit of a stretch…but dammit if these songs don’t just you want to learn new languages. The entirety of Alaska walks this line between bouncy indiepop and the dreamiest of dream pop numbers. “Els Ilacs” is a jam and a half, but I’ve really grown partial to the title track, “Alaska.” Just ten solid pop tracks to make your life infinitely better. Brooding Indiepop from Ultim Cavall

What’s that? You missed New Order? Well, luckily, the band have left a lasting impression on many across the globe, and the latest to bring that to mind is from Barcelona outfit, Ultim Cavall. I mean, if you don’t hear the NO in the opening 20 seconds, perhaps I need to first introduce you to them because this is a pretty spot-on homage, albeit one entirely in Spanish. I love the little breakdown just after the two minute mark where the group flirt with the atmospheric side of things before happily bounding back down the hook-laden line. They’ve got a new LP, Alaska, which will be released by Discos de Kirlian this coming October.

A Rocking Number From Relative Ways

It’s Monday morning, it’s hot as hell, and it’s time to kick off the week with a little rock n roll to take the edge off. Today my rock music is coming from Aussie Matt Finnemore and his relatively new project known as Relative Ways. For sharing today is his new single “This World” which features several elements of the 90s grunge rock movement combined with a somewhat brighter sound of modern day rock bands like Wavves or Surfer Blood. I love the edge and grit shown by the vocals and the music from Matt.

Relative Ways will release new album Alaska on August 10th.

Quirky Number from Parker Longbough

You’ll find multiple reasons to enjoy this new track from Parker Longbough, and perhaps part of that relies upon the distant wilderness of Alaska that Parker calls home. Musically, he’s writing this witty bedroom folk tunes, similar to what we heard on early Coma Cinema records. But, for me, the fact that he doesn’t seem to be taking himself too seriously, draws me nearer; I mean, who else is going to write about Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan? Sometimes it just feels right to be charmed by your pop music. Like Jeffrey Lewis? Then you’ll really enjoy this; this tune features on Left on Tri, which drops on April 20th.

You Need Parker Longbough in Your Life

It’s been quite sometime since we’ve heard anything from Matthew Witthoeft and his project known as Parker Longbough. He has returned from the abyss today and is bringing this new jam of a single entitled “May Kasahara”. I’m immediately reminded of some old school indie rock like Modest Mouse or Cursive, especially with the aggressive vocals during the chorus. The lackadaisicalverses play off the heavy and emotional chorus perfectly. Down.

10/18 Portugal. The Man @ Emo’s

The city of Wasilla, Alaska is best known for one of two things: The first, and the one we keep hearing about in the news, is how the city was once home to vice presidential candidate Sarah Pallin. The second, and much less widely known fact, is that Wasilla was also once called home by members of psych-rock band Portugal. The Man. Regardless of where they came from, the one time Alaskan outfit (now in Portland) known as Portugal. The Man rocked the house at Emo’s on Saturday night. Follow the jump to read more about the show.
