Album Stream: Husky Rescue – The Long Lost Friend

huskyFinding yourself lost in the new album from Husky Rescue shouldn’t be much of a problem, yet that’s precisely where I think the music is intended to go. The Long Lost Friend (Special Edition) is brimming with electronic experimentation, symphonic flourish and the gorgeous voice of Johanna Kalen; each song takes you somewhere new, be it the pulsing throb of “Under Friendly Fire” or the oddball experiment of “Tree House,” each song sounds different. Each tracks leaves you somewhere new. If anything, the collection of songs take you all over the map, yet the album’s design is cohesive, leaving you precisely where you left off. It’s available this Friday via Catskills Records

ATX Spotlight: Stream the Sweet Talk Album

DoublePerfectCover_iTunes-300x300We’ve already rocked a few singles for you, but now that Sweet Talk‘s new LP is finally on the streets, it’s time for you to see what a great listen it is. Not that my voice matters too much, but I’d have to say that this is one of the city’s top LPs in 2015. Double Perfect is fueled by high energy rifts, and it holds some interesting musical turns in the album’s continuity, like “Wrong”” moving into “Tightrope” for a change of pace. It’ll also become pretty clear to you that while you can lump the band in with the ATX punk scene, there’s a whole lot of talent behind the guitar work…making the record more than just your average fare. You’d be smart to pick it up immediately via 12XU.

Stream (and buy) the New LP from the Ocean Party

11856249_10153084418697263_15473172251284196_oUntil earlier this year, we’d kept out ATH Records label rocking the Texas scene, but I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to step out and take on the Ocean Party for their US release. Front to back, Light Weight is a remarkable listening, showing the maturity and the pop sensibility the band has long been honing in Australia. If things go the right way, this should be one of those records your friends will tell you you should have grabbed before it went out of print. To see where I am right, stream the entirety of the LP below. If you’re in love like I am, you can grab it HERE or HERE; it should arrive and ship out this week

Stream the New Album from Knifepleats

knifeI’m an admitted fan of Rose Melberg and her work, so when we heard about a new project, Knife Pleats, I was really excited to hear what it had to offer. As expected, it’s every bit as glorious as we thought, and the full length is now available to pick up on your own. If you’re looking for something that’s just slightly hazy on the sound, but adheres to the delightful side of indiepop, then I think you’re going to want to pick up Hat Bark Beach. It’s available in the US via Lost Sound Tapes and Jigsaw Records.

Stream War Tuna from The Lochness Mobsters

wartunaIt’s been a pretty good month for ATH Records, with our releases of Rose Selavy/Templo X split 7″, the Ocean Party announcement, and of course, the debut of The Lochness Mobsters.  Things rolled along pretty quickly, and while the Austin trio is out on the road, we wanted to make sure the rest of you folks were able to hear their excellent debut, War Tuna.  There’s touches of surf, garage, soul, pop, garage, and ultimately just good times. You can stream the jams below, and grab your own copy on all white vinyl HERE or HERE. Also, if you happen to be living out on the East, check this spot for their TOUR DATES. Austinites can welcome them home to the Grand on August 30th.

Blast Some Falling Stacks

stacksonstacksI’m feeling a little antsy and a little angsty, so this new album from Falling Stacks is the perfect place to find myself today.  The UK act seems to draw from all my favorite acts of days gone past, hitting vocal marks a la Dead Kennedys or stuttering discordant guitar licks a la Fugazi.  All that being said, No Wives, is not for the weak of heart; you’ll find a this underlying tension that has you on edge as the group knifes their way through the entire LP.  The album is out now via Battle Worldwide Recordings.

Shivery Shakes/Bop English Tour Kickoff @ Cheer Ups (5/12)

Shivery ShakesAs if two great bands weren’t enough for you all, you should go out and support a couple of great local acts getting ready to head out on tour.  You’ve got to fill their pockets with gold, buying merch and throwing spare change their way.  Shivery Shakes and Bop English are hitting the road, kicking off their respective tours with The Rotten Mangos, Texas Never Whispers, and The Inscape at Cheer Ups tonight. I’m still really proud of the Shakes album, Three Waves and a Shake, which you can grab right HERE; I’m happy to have my name associated with that LP. You can find all their tour dates right HERE, but if you’re living in Austin, head out and support all the bands tonight.

ATX Spotlight: Secret Daughter Release New Album

secretTrying to cover all the great music in Austin is pretty near impossible, so I was completely caught off-guard when I came across Secret Daughter.  They just released this incredible new record, 2, and I can’t do anything but beg you to go and listen to it right away.  There’s some elements of the dreamier side of indie rock here, though there’s other construction pieces…some more experimental, some gaze-y that fill out the band’s sound.  I’ll admit that I’ve done nothing but consume the music that’s below here since I found it…so don’t be an idiot like me and miss out on this band.

Have You Heard John Galm?

jgWell, just in case you didn’t know, John Galm is the man behind countless bands like Snowing or Slow Warm Death, you should take a listen to his work now.  While those acts have their own distinct style, he’s taken a much more stripped down approach with his solo work.  Late last year he released Sky of No Stars, which I passed on for some reason or another…but I won’t be passing now that the LP is getting an album release via Square of Opposition Records. You can preorder it HERE and stream the LP below.
