Michael Robert Chadwick Share Dirt Nap

Felt like waking up this morning with some easy listening from Michael Robert Chadwick would be the best way to ease into your Tuesday. He’ll be releasing his latest LP, Illusions of Touch, next Friday, offering up a jazzier brand of indie rock than perhaps you’re accustomed to cranking up. Horns blast in the background throughout, but they’re smoother and sexier, rather than wildly skronking at us. Chadwick’s voice also has a faint resemblance to Sufjan, sort of quiet in the mix, hoping to pull you in through his lyricism and song arrangements. A careful approach to pop, and a welcome reward for us all; be sure to grab the new LP from Anxiety Blanket Records on June 20th.

Asha Wells Releases Title Track from The Lesson EP

Let’s slow things down a bit this morning, take a minute to breathe and bask in the glow of Asha Wells‘ new single. Musically, it’s a pretty minimal piece, working atop a simple electronic beat throughout the verses, building with a little more light instrumentation as the chorus opens up. What that means is that Asha has to carry the song on the wings of her voice alone, letting heavier tones soak up the entirety of the negative space; the chorus gets a little bit of an aid from Stephen Steinbrink adding a little backing accent to the party. Look for the Lesson EP to his on May 30th via Anxiety Blanket Records.

plu Drop Debut Single

Anxiety Blanket Records has a knack for uncovering really rad acts, and it seems like plu might just have what it takes to capture our attention. For my ears, there’s a bit of Electrelane meets Dry Cleaning, albeit with a jazzier inflection. There’s a bit of an up and down, waiting patiently to let the noisier elements unfold. But! That’s what I love about this act, as they aren’t going to fulfill your musical expectations, holding tightly to their own style; it gives you a different vibe in the long-run, allowing you to settle into their sound as we await the next single on the horizon.

Breezy New Tune From David Robert Pollock

It’s been a bit of a slow week for me on the new music end as I still try to shake off the Spring festival lull. Los Angeles based artist David Robert Pollock is helping ease me into a chill Thursday with his lovely and enchanting new tune “I Want the World.” I am totally mesmerized by the delicate, intimate, and brutally honest nature of his approach to songwriting. What a lovely way to start your day.

This track appears on a new EP of the same name which is due out on April 30th via Snack Shack Tracks/Anxiety Blanket Records.

Spencer Hoffman Announces Roses Fly

I really enjoyed Spencer Hoffman‘s 2002 LP, Apple Core, so it’s exciting to hear that there’s a new EP on the way this May. Our first listen has a bit of a ghostly western vibe to it, offering up a slight twist on modern cosmic country. In a sense, it’s almost as if the tune’s struggling on the turntable, warped through the years of being played; you can hear that sparkling twang, but as it fills the air, it seems to sort of hang eternally. Ultimately, it allows for Hoffman’s voice to hang in there and almost whisper its melody into your ear, which worked to great effect. Looking forward to the release of the Roses Fly EP; it’s out on May 10th via Anxiety Blanket Records.

Daniel Brouns Shares Lizard Killer

RayRay and I are DJing an emo night over at our favorite spot Oddwood this week, and over the last several weeks I’ve been diving through my own collection, digging for the hits. It’s brought me back to some certain styles that may even be considered emo-adjacent, but I feel like this tune from Daniel Brouns slides right in, particularly when you put it alongside acts like Pedro or early Good Life. The beat is sampled, with guitars carefully woven into the tapestry, as Brouns distinctively croons atop the mixture. It definitely feels like early Saddle Creek with bits of home recordings sampled within the song’s confines, adding to the personal narrative being woven. He’ll be releasing Stock Music for the Cosmos via Anxiety Blanket Records on May 17th.

Kisskadee Shares Brother Video

Currently playing this new Kisskadee track on repeat. There’s something magical about the looped piano line and underlying string/woodwind pieces that provide the track with a nice little background to match the synced up beat. I’m loving how Kasie Shahbaz has built texture after texture behind her, though her vocal performance is also quite a marvel, at least in this song’s presentation. At times its calming and then out of nowhere it gets looped into soaring heights, rising in your ear as striking cacophony encircles the listener’s ears. “Brother” is just one of the various stages of life that we get to witness on Black Hole Era, as Shahbaz takes on the cycle from childhood discover to adult loneliness; the album drops on May 6th via Anxiety Blanket Records.

La Bonte Shares Don’t Let This Define Me

I guess today I’m really into these slow burning tracks, the sort that kind of drip with endless emotion, like this new track from La Bonte, the songwriting project of Garrett La Bonte. When it opens, it definitely feels like something hanging in the territory between late 90s Jade Tree and Bedhead, both things that I’m perfectly fond of on my end. In the middle the song gives you a bit of respite, letting you breath for a moment before taking on a more pronounced jam mode; it recalls that sweet spot where slowcore burning tunes erupted into these delicious rock opuses that erupted and crested in your ears. Don’t Let This Define Me, the debut LP from La Bonte will be out Friday via Anxiety Blanket Records.
