FFF Fest Artist Spotlight: Alvvays

Alvvays. press photo. red. Gavin KeenMan, are we Austinites lucky. We just finished wrapping our coverage of ACL last Friday with B. Gray’s pretty photos, and now we’re getting ready to take on Auditorium Shores for the funnest of the fests. Kicking off our coverage, I’ve got an artist spotlight for one of my favorite SXSW stars, Alvvays. I caught this group a few times last spring, and each time they made me fall in love with their pop hooks and jangle rock sensibilities a bit more. They’ve simply got a recipe for delight– the impossibly pure vocals of leading lady, Molly Rankin combine with the crisp guitar work and are supplemented by bombastic drums. What more could you want in a festival setting? Nothing. So take a listen below, fall in love, and get ready to catch them on Sunday on the Orange Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest.

Say Hello To Sidewinder & Graham Williams

Red7It’s well known around these parts that our beloved music scene in Austin is ever changing, and though some may go into panic mode, we here at ATH understand that change is all part of the industry.  With that said, I’m sure many of you have heard the sad news about the closing of prized venue Red 7 come this September.  While we mourn the loss of one of our favorite venues in town, let us rejoice in the news of a new venue in the Red River District.  The newly crowned Sidewinder will open in October, shortly after the closing of Red 7, and will occupy a totally revamped and remodeled space formerly known as Red Eyed Fly.  With all the creative minds on the list of those involved, this is definitely something to be excited about.  The Chronicle was one of the first to break the news.

With all the craziness currently going on in and around Red River (Cheer Ups rock wall, closing of Holy Mountain/Red 7, new venues, etc.) it seemed like a great time to speak with someone in the know.  Step in Transmission Events founder Graham Williams.  We sent Graham a few questions about his new venue and the current state of the live scene in Austin.  He has a lot to say and any real music fan in town should take his thoughts into consideration.  After the jump you can get his thoughts.

FFF8 Lineup Leaked – 3Day Passes @ 10am

Date Nov 8,9,10
Location Auditorium Shores
Doors 11am (Show up Early)
Tickets On Sale @ 10am

The internet had the scoop overnight on the lineup for this year’s FunFunFun Festival, or as I call it, three-days-of-chasing-bands-with-a-camera-so-too-busy-to-catch-a-buzz Fest.

I am sure we will have previews galore, but the lineup this year has many alums of previous iterations with plenty of new faces to go along with the mayhem on three-by-two stages. The short list of jams – Slayer, Thee Oh Sees, Cut Copy, Kurt Vile, Television, The Walkmen, Johnny Marr, Delorean, Chromatics, Snoop, The Men, Descendents, Bonobo, Small Black, King Kahn, and oh soooo many more. If you can’t find a band you like in this line up, you suck at music listening and festivals.

Full list of leaked bands after the break…

Update: Poster is out, leaks are fun.

Music.

Comedy.

Ride.

Fun Fest Lineup Is Here

We’ve all been waiting for today, and we’ve all been super hyped on the 2011 Fun Fun Fun Fest. Honestly, the leaks and the info today on turntable.fm all seemed a little heavy on the hip-hop/electro side of things for me.  But, now that the line-up is on its way, there are some great gems. I mean, my man crush Ted Leo will be there. I’m stoked on seeing Cloud Nothings and Radio Dept, so much so, that I’d go alone for all that. But, as Transmission always does a great job putting this together, everyone’s going to find their own genre/niche of bands to get excited for.  So, do yourself a favor, head over to the SITE, and see who your favorites will be. Then leave us a comment and let us know…maybe you can give us a heads up on what’s hip. Also, don’t forget tickets go on sale for the 3rd round today.  Label me officially stoked!

From The Closet: Boyz II Men

boyz-ii-men-01Motownphilly’s back again, doin’ a lil’ east coast fling.  Boyz II men goin’ off, not too hard, not too soft.  You love this song.  I know you love this song.  I bring you this 90’s middle school dance hit because Boyz II Men are playing in town this weekend and we know you’ll be there then lie about actually being there.  The Motown boyz are playing Auditorium Shores on Saturday as part of the Urban Music festival and tickets are only $16.  You know you want to.

Keep Austin Weird Festival

The sixth annual Keep Austin Weird Festival & 5K will be taking place this Saturday(6/28) at Auditorium Shores. With us being a music website, we don’t really care too much about all that running so let’s talk about the killer lineup of bands for the festival. Bands will be getting started at 3 pm with Super Pal Universe and going until 8:30 pm with headliner Alejandro Escovedo. Other highlights include Austin band What Made Milwaukee Famous and my favorite new artist coming out of Austin Black Joe Lewis. Wristbands for the event are only $10 which is less than what you would pay to see any of these bands. Check out the website for the event for more information & band lineups. If that’s not enough to make you want to go, listen to “Gunpowder” by Black Joe Lewis and you’ll change your mind. Promise.
