Announcing the Austin Town Hall vs Side One Track One Party

Every year, for the last forever, we’ve teamed up with our frienemies over at Side One Track One to throw a great big Austin party on the Sunday before SXSW music gets going. It’s a celebration of Austin acts…something of great importance to us…as the rest of the city is about to get swept up in whatever the next big thing is. Plus, John at SOTO is the curator at 101x Homegrown, so you know he knows his stuff…and rumor has it that we run a label…so maybe that’s cool too? The party takes place Sunday, March 15th over at Hotel Vegas; this year we’ve got a wide variety from Mobley to Lola Tried to Blood to Zettajoule to BLXPLTN…and so many more. Click HERE for more info! See ya’ll then!

Collection of Best of Austin for 2019

Clearly, based on the name of our site, we’re always down to represent Austin, and while I feel like releases were down in the city this year, there was tons of great stuff to be devoured. Rather than rank and file our friends; we’re just here to uplift the scene, and maybe remind you of some Texas music that might have (it shouldn’t!) slipped under your radar. Black Pumas got the deserved love, but there’s tons bubbling beneath the surface. I mostly broke it into labels, as they’re the heart and soul of this city. Comes with a fancy playlist.

Song Premiere: Western Youth

Howdy.

We’ve got a local-flavored premier here, the second single by Western Youth from their upcoming release. “The King Is Gone” kicks off with a big guitar making a big guitar noise and settles into a groove that wreaks of Austin. If you ever wonder how one started an evening downtown in the early 90’s, it often sounded like this. Flourishes of piano and organ interplay and harmonize with the guitar and vocals; it is a sound you can only have when you have enough people on stage, enough instruments, enough pedigree lending their voices as the song ebbs and wanes through choruses and solos.

You can preorder the album due September 21 by clicking here, or have a listen live and pick up the record at the release party at Spiderhouse. It reset my headspace and now I can get on with my Friday.

BTS: ACL Live and 3TEN

Sometimes, we get invited to little functions here in the business end of the music industry in Austin, TX. We are quite fortunate to have one of the great venues in the world in our backyard, a venue that takes its name from one of the great music television program in the world. ACL Live is coming up on seven years as the home of Austin City Limits show tapings and has not rested on their reputation. Small tweaks have been made throughout the years, but the first major overhaul of the show experience was just completed. The lighting system has been fully revamped, all LED with more and better housings with variable colors, new pattern and motion capabilities and less power consumption and downtime for maintenance.

This seems as good a time as any to take a little tour ACL Live and little brother venue, 3TEN, and learn what’s up in the bat cave.

ATX Spotlight: New Youth

13015687_1120524571302003_116653170245744106_nToday I’m excited to be one of the first to share this new single by Austin native Silas Acosta and his new solo project entitled New Youth. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, Acostaused to play drums for previous ATH favorite Swim Team. Now that he’s stepping out on his own, I’m digging this shoe gaze vibe here somewhat similar to fellow locals and favorites LUDGF. One could certainly get lost in this dreamy new single “Soft Eyes”.

No word yet on a full length or EP, but stay tuned.

ATX Spotlight: More From Sharks in the Deep End

unnamed-2I am really beginning to find a whole lot to like about Austin band Sharks in the Deep End. The songs are essentially simple pop songs with catchy hooks and distinctive vocals to create something of their own. “Crash Test Doll” is the latest offering from the group and yet again I dig the pop sound with a bit of an edge to it. I suggest we all start paying attention to this band now as a local sure to blow up before we know it.

Killin’ Machine is out on April 16th.

ATX Spotlight: New Indoor Creature Video

1454832_1437394216488421_1779311965_nThough I currently know very little about Austin based band Indoor Creature, I’m looking to remedy that as much as I can starting now.  Caleb, ring leader of the group, just sent me an email with some information about a new video and single the band has been working on for awhile.  The track & video found below, called “Present Thinking”, is a beauty of a pop number filled with all kinds of fun jangly vibes and good times.  I’d say you check it out below and start paying attention to locals Indoor Creature.

You can also purchase and download the new LP from Indoor Creature entitled Present Thinking over on bandcamp.
