Austin Weekend Show Suggestions

AustinMusiFlowsaThis weekend, above most normal weekends, is a pretty good reason to go out.  There’s a benefit being put on by sxswcares, raising money for victims of the SXSW tragedy.  A lot of these venues are saving up for donations, are hosting events, as well as directing folks to various on-line auctions to raise money, so be sure to help support the worty cause; remind people what a great community we are. So, with that in mind, here are my suggestions for great shows to hit up this weekend. Read more

Austin Spotlight: David & the Israelites

coverThis past Saturday night I attended a pretty incredible show at Cheer Up Charlies; I’ve covered many of the acts like Tele Novella, Daniel F. Doyle and Shivery Shakes, but I can’t, for the life of me, think why I hadn’t given more love to David & the Israelites up until now.  David Israel’s been writing music in town for some time, but he’s finally got the proper band to back his unique blend of oddball folk, making music that deserves more attention.  I hate to draw comparisons, but he’s Austin’s own version of Silver Jews.  He’s got that deep vocal and writes witty lyrics.  I’m including a track below that I believe came before the inclusion of the full band line-up, but if you’re seeing a show bill with this group’s name, or David’s alone for that matter, I suggest you dig through the couch cushions for enough change to this unique act.

Austin Spotlight: Hola Beach Ready New EP

1531766_384113795059583_1152856340_nMonday night I hit up the Mohawk to bid farewell to Gal Pals, but I was also treated to some excellent local talent with Hola Beach.  There was a wall of noise crashing into the ears of audience members, and while that may sound dangerous, everyone was tapping their toes. The band have been relatively quiet, recording-wise, since 2013, but you’re in for some great tunes folks.  They graciously handed out 24 copies of their new EP, with some artwork done by Mohawk employee Patrick Waites. This track below is pretty special, displaying the group’s balance between those gaze-y moments and a slow, yet special vocal delivery.  We’ll keep you up to date with more new about the band’s upcoming releases when we know more, but for now, rock to this new jam, “Anyway.”

Austin Weekend Show Suggestions

Austin Spotlight: Pop Rock from ZNTH

ZNTH Elevator 600pxIf you haven’t heard of ZNTH while living in Austin, then perhaps you’re living under a really large rock.    They’ve got a slew of influences, ranging from local acts like Ringo Deathstarr to Jens Lekman.  You’ll find bombastic noise elements backed by really neat little bits of pop.  You’ll find these powerful touches on their new album, Yr Damned Zenith, which was just recently released.  The music their crafting sounds perfect for those of you looking to catch a dynamic rock show.  Take a trip through their album by visiting their BANDCAMP page to see more of what the group is all about.

Austin Spotlight: The Late Joys

coverMan, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to IPSML for pointing me in the direction of this great Austin band, The Late Joys.  I don’t know where I’ve been hiding, or rather where this band’s been hiding, but apparently they’ve been making great tracks for quite some time.  I mean, the track below is from a free EP that came out back in 2009, but the band hasn’t quit.  They’ve got a slew of live recordings they’ve done recently you can also grab from them.  For my two cents, the band sounds like a cross between Mountain Goats and Hollywood Gossip (a sorely missed Austin act).  I’ll keep you up to date now that these guys are on my radar.

Austin Spotlight: Even More from Ghetto Ghouls

ggAlready with two song posts on our site, I think most are aware that local boys Ghetto Ghouls have our stamp of approval.  I’ve got even more great tuneage from these guys today in the form of this track called “Simple C”.  We are yet again treated here to some gritty, rough rock n roll sounds reminiscent of some of our greatest indie rock forefathers.  Get on the bandwagon now people.

Once again you should be buying the new Ghetto Ghouls self-titled album on April 8th via Monofonus Press.

Show Preview: Ringo Deathstarr @ Mohawk (3.31)

ringoThe folks over at Mohawk are dedicating themselves to keeping things fun and local on Monday nights, bringing you another great gig in their Showoff Series.  First, let me just tell you that the show is FREE, so you get to enjoy some great bands and spend all your money on booze and MERCH!  But, this Monday’s show has some incredible local acts, and one we’ll all need to say goodbye to.  Ringo Deathstarr is the headliner on the night, and the band needs no introduction; they’re one of the many rad acts across town.  But, you need to come say goodbye to Gal Pals, who unfortunately are relocating due to career opportunities.  We love the duo, and we wish them all the best on their new ventures.  Also, Hola Beach will kick off the night, rounding out a line-up that’s worth your time.  See you there.

Austin Spotlight: The Ghost Wolves

ghostwolvsI’m loving living in Austin right now; there’s so much incredible music out there it’s hard to know where to turn.  But, we do know one of the band’s on our list to watch is The Ghost Wolves.  The duo have deservedly earned themselves a strong following here in town, with wailing guitars and pounding  drum work.  Carley Wolf comes off with a strong personality, using her bratty tones to rock the crowds.  On May 27th the band will release Man, Woman, Beast via Plowboy Recordsit’ll include several live bonus tracks too! Enjoy jamming out to this track today, will ya?
