Bounce House Release Party @ Beerland (11.26)

bounceWe’ve got a nice little community starting to reemerge in Austin, and one of our city’s photographers has a a rad little band that’s popping up on our radar.  The band is called Bounce House, and they’ll be releasing their first EP titled Hottest Day of the Year.  It’s filled with five rad tunes of punk rock that give you that fine blend between of bounce (as in the title) and grit; I’m really happy for these dudes.  You’ll also have other Austin heavy-hitters like Bobby Jealousy and Basketball Shorts filling out the evening at Beerland, so expect to get your money’s worth…and pick up the EP while you’re at it!

You’ll find a ton of shows in town on Friday, including the hipster-approved Miley Cyrus, I mean CHVRCHES, but here’s a show for those who are looking for something a little far left of the dial.  Canada’s Besnard Lakes are the headliners on the night, offering up their blend of indie meets psych meets folk meets jam.  Then you’ll have the band that I think cold steal the show, Elephant Stone.  They’re another Canadian act that have been on my list of reliable group’s for some time now; you should check out their most recent self-titled album.  And, as an added bonus, you get local opener, The Boxing Lesson.  So, if you’re not going to Cass McCombs, and you don’t like Miley Cyrus, then this is definitely going to be a good place to find yourself Friday night.

The season of rock n’ roll traveling shows is slowly drawing to a close, and there’s only a handful of really remarkable acts remaining on our Austin schedule (there’ll still be tons of great local shows as always).  One of the best acts to see, Cass McCombs, will be coming into town on Friday evening to play the Belmont. He’s touring behind his recent release Big Wheel and Others, which has some really incredible songs on it.  Personally, I find Cass to be really compelling live; I think the performances he gives make it well worth your time to make it out of the house on Friday.  Plus, you’ll get a chance to see Pink Nasty, one of our own local legends kick things off for the night.  Either way, it sounds like you win if you make it out!

Austin Spotlight: New Music from Abram Shook

Abram.Shook.1.300We’ve long been huge supporters of Abram Shook, one of the nicest musicians around Austin.  We adored his work with Great Nostalgic, but now he’s opted to go it his own, which might be for the best if you take a listen to this track.  I hear a bit of Bolan in his vocal delivery, but I like how that works against the twanging guitar that calmly sits in the background.  Sounds like he’s got things moving in the right direction, which we’ll all get a chance to hear when he releases his Sun Marquee, his new album for local label Western Vinyl.

Show Review: Nine Inch Nails ACL Taping (11.4)

NIN @ ACL TVBased on the throngs of people begging for tickets oustide of Moody Theater, Monday night’s taping at ACL Live was a pretty hot commodity. Myself, well, again I was fighting to reclaim my youth by revisiting the catalogue of Nine Inch Nails.

The folks at ACL should definitely be proud of bringing in Nine Inch Nails for a taping.  Sure, they’re huge in the grand scheme of things, though not necessarily the largest act to grace the studio.  But, what it did represent was the power behind the PBS program, as the importance of the show continues to grow with each act that comes to the venue.  It also allowed for many of us to get a version of Nine Inch Nails that me mightn’t have seen otherwise.

Show Preview: Laura Marling @ Central Presbyterian Church (11.6)

I first found myself drawn to the voice of Laura Marling when she participated in the original line-up of Noah and the Whale, but since her departure from the group, she’s only continued to rise to fame.  Her most recent album, Once I Was an Eagle, has received praise all over the world, offering listeners a chance to absorb her passionate take on stripped down folk music.  I couldn’t envision a better place to catch her than at the Central Presbyterian Church, where her voice is sure to soar into the balcony.  She’ll be joined by opener Willy Mason, adding to the nights powerful line-up.

So you’re bummed you didn’t get to see the Nine Inch Nails taping, or you don’t feel like going all the way East to catch Cults? Well, the best option out of all of these is still going to be the Nobunny show at Red 7.  Nobunny’s just released Secret Songs, and he’ll be bringing his sweaty live show to our local haunt in hopes of encouraging a joyous riot.  He’ll also be joined by one of my absolute favorite local bands, Pharaohs, which pretty much guarantees that you’re night’s going to be super rad, regardless of what plans you had. Hope to see you there.

Friday’s Local Austin Gigs!

austin-skyline-mark-weaverWe’ve been working harder this year on being sure we get more coverage going, not just internationally, but locally as well.  With that in mind, I wanted to point out a couple of shows that are desperately seeking your attendance on Friday night, in case you didn’t have plans. These shows all offer a bit of different sounds, but each features some of our favorite local acts, so be sure to do your best to support our local scene.  Or, you could go see Widespread Panic.  Seems like an easy choice to me, but it’s your life!
