Austin Spotlight: New Music from Daniel Francis Doyle

dfd-t-shirtDaniel Francis Doyle is an Austin musician that deals with the more playful side of pop music.  There’s always been interesting time signatures or non-traditional instruments used in his craft, yet that’s always been carefully wrapped around warm melodies.  Lucky for us all, Daniel has just put up a batch of new tunes; it’s the first I’ve heard from him since 2011.  According to my sources, the music was recorded at The Owl, one of Austin’s best kept secrets, so you never know who popped up to help record.  I like this particular tune for it’s light-hearted guitar stutter, not to mention I’m a fan of his vocal delivery.  There’s 9 new songs, and Daniel’s gracious enough to share them with you all. I’ll keep you posted when we near a release date for these tracks.

Austin Spotlight: Simple Circuit Release New Album

simplecircutiThose following the undercurrent of the Austin scene have surely heard of Simple Circuit; they’ve released a few 7 inches to rave reviews.  Good news comes today that the band has released their debut, self-titled, LP…and after listening to it all day long, it’s exactly what I expected.  The whole record is brimming with energetic songs with excellent guitar work and steady drumming; you’ll want to have your speakers up  loud for the duration.  There’s even a few mellower tracks to keep the LP catchy for everyday listening.  Right now the band is offering it up for the NYP, but I highly suggest you donate, as these guys (and this record) deserve it!

Austin Spotlight: Mini Dresses

minidressesLate last year I posted a tune from the first 7″ by Austin dream poppers Mini Dresses (released on Manic Pop).  Just last week they dropped a brand new two song EP, aptly titled Two.  While it might only be two tunes, it’s just the sound I’ve been looking for lately.  It’s got this bubbling guitar/bass line that works excellently throughout, occasionally jangling off.  Female vocals float cooly throughout the tune, though in an airy sense as opposed to some sort of haunting dreamscape.  This is definitely a band we should all keep our eyes on in the near future.

Dead Gaze Returns w/ Another Album

deadgazeJust a few weeks back, Dead Gaze released some early recordings that he compiled together; I enjoyed those all for the most part.  But, now things are coming quick for Cole Furlow’s project, with another new album, Brain Holiday, slated for release by Fat Cat on October 22nd.  This new single definitely shows the pop sensibility shining through, despite a bit of fuzz added atop the vocals.  There’s a melody that runs central, emphasized by the vocals throughout, getting me rather excited for more tunes from DG. The band will also be coming to Austin on September 13 with Dent May, but I’ll remind you of that in a few weeks.

Show Preview: Young Girls

younggirlsI know a lot of you think that heading to My Bloody Valentine is the smart choice Friday night, but we’ve got something better for you…at least as far as your wallet is concerned. There are some great local acts playing over at Parish, including up-and-comers, Empire Machines, as well as 3D Friends and El Paso’s Mattox  But, my money is on our friends from Young Girls stealing the show.  They’re in the process of recording new tracks, and they’ve already been playing some of those new hits for us all–guaranteed fun! Not only should our recommendation set things going, but it’s only $5! Super cheap, super fun. We’ll be there.

Austin Spotlight: The Villas

villasPRESSphotoThe Villas are an Austin band that have been working hard in this town for awhile now, but have been relatively quiet over the last year or so.  As a fan of the band since their inception, I was excited to get a taste of some new music the guys have been working on.  This track “Life Goes On” is part of a new two song single from the locals that can be streamed over on soundcloud or you can download the one song below.  When discussing straight up pop music in Austin, it’s rare that you find a band that can create tunes such as these.  Well done sirs.

shesirLong have we supported the dream pop of local Austin band She Sir, and it’s about time that the band has their new record ready for you!  Good news comes your way, in that regard, with the band streaming their second single from the upcoming LP, Go Guitars.  On the latest single, you can hear the work of a band who’ve clearly honed the art of writing sensational pop.  There’s steady drum work in the background, with strokes of synth placed in all the right places, maximizing the enjoyment for listeners.  Looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer to hear the beauty in its entirety!

Austin Spotlight: New Crunchy Track from Not In The Face

Not In The FaceAustin’s Not In The Face has been making quite a name for themselves for the last few years, melting faces with their brash rock n’ roll and outrageous live shows.  They’re wrapping up work on a brand new EP, and they’ve let us share one of these new jams with you all.  Now that the band has moved up from a duo to a tight-knit four piece, their sound is huge, as witnessed in this track.  The vocals have the classic rock swagger, but the music just sounds ready built for arenas–in a good sense.  This is definitely a track that’s going to burst some ear drums, so keep an eye out for a great rock show near you; the band has dates in Ft. Worth, Austin and Houston in early August.

Haunting Folk Themed Tune From Jesse Woods

81385df9d5007ab135be1d818d1c99047cc0fc21Singer/Songwriter Jesse Woods took a very unique road on his path to becoming a musician.  His story tells us that he hails from Katy, TX, played some college football at Texas A&M (boo), suffered one too many injuries, and decided to pick up a guitar.  Lucky for us, the music currently being created by Jesse is some of the most heartfelt and almost haunting songwriter music I’ve heard in quite some time.  I’d liken him to guys like JBM or a darker version of Tallest Man on Earth.  Anyone who reads this blog knows that those are two of my own personal favorites.  Check out new song “Lazerburn” below and let us know what ya think.

Debut album Get Your Burdens Lifted will be out on August 6th via Guns in the Sun.
