Night Moves Show Preview + Ticket Giveaway

NightMoves_PhotoBy_NickWalker_3There’s something about the summer time that makes listening to folk music absolutely perfect.  I can’t explain it exactly, but I do know that Night Moves are one of those bands that seem to fit this bill; it’s a good thing they’ll be playing at Mohawk next Friday with locals Lord Buffalo.  Their recent album, Colored Emotions, has received tons of praise for its nod to folk history, which makes the setting of an indoor set at Mohawk ideal for an intimate show you and your friends won’t soon forget.  We’re giving away two tickets to the show, and all you have to do is leave a CLEVER comment. We’ll pick a winner next Wednesday at 5 PM, and let you know! You can also go the traditional route and buy tickets HERE.

Here’s a recent set from the boys at Bonaroo: Bonaroo!

Austin Spotlight: Love Inks Announce Album

loveinksThose of you who were elsewhere Saturday night missed the mesmerizing set by Love Inks that closed out the Rockaway Beach Party at Hotel Vegas.   On the heels of that remarkable performance I awoke today to find news that the group had announced the release of their new album, Generation Club; it’ll be released on September 24th.  Their lead single for the upcoming release has a hypnotic beat that vibes throughout, whilst lead singer Sherry Leblanc cooly let’s the warmth of her vocals float atop.  Songs like this one, and a live show to back it up, show that the band is poised for a really incredible end to 2013.

Austin Spotlight: Friendly Savages

1016657_480126135399015_1655698993_nWe ran a nice little punk rock jam this morning, so I wanted to bring you all something from the opposite direction, Austin’s Friendly Savages. The group dropped their album, O, Joshua, a few months back, and it’s an album begging for a larger audience.  On this track, I like the way the structure unfolds, opening slowly then moving to a full folk sound, but they have a nice little breakdown near the end of the track that should surprise you.  Those of you looking about for a new folk-rock act might have just found exactly what you were looking for today, and in the very least, you’ve got a great song to enjoy today.

Austin Spotlight: The Nouns Say Goodbye w/ New Album

thenounsIt’s a sad day when good bands have to say goodbye, but at least Austin’s The Nouns are going out with a bang.  They’ve just recently released their self-titled album, which features the gem of a track that we’re featuring below.  Fear not though, you can still get the album from the guys by visiting their Bandcamp page.  We’ve always enjoyed jamming with these guys, so we’re really going to miss them, but we assume they’ll have other projects coming your way in the future.  For now, take a moment of silence as another great local acts decides to call it a day.

Austin Spotlight: The Whalers Ready New LP

battleshipsartI’m really excited by the leaps and bounds that The Whalers have made in the past couple of years, and I think their latest single really demonstrates the growth, providing us with one of their best tunes to date.  The band does a great job blending mild bits of Americana with modern indie rock flare, adding both energy and their own unique touches.  Their new record will be available to the masses come this October, and as expected, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a listen.  And if you’re local, the group plays with our boys Tiger Waves on July 6th over at the Belmont.

The last time I caught Prince Rama in town, I was mesmerized by their performance, so it goes without saying that you should take it upon yourself to catch such an incredible show.  But, more importantly, there are a slew of local Austin acts kicking things off, such as Sleep Over and Technicolor Hearts.  More importantly, we’ll all be treated to the debut of new Austin band, Silk Rodeo.  A member of the live act has called the music “smooth wave” and promised lasers! You don’t want to miss that.  You can catch a video of the band’s single, “All Yr Own” right HERE.  Show up early, support the locals, and tip the bartenders; it’s going to be a special night from all the acts.

Sunday BBQ WTF OMG from Loteria

loteriaI realize that as an Austin blog, we’ve got to do our part to spread the word more often about the great acts all over our fair city, so I wanted to introduce people to Loteria.  They’ve been playing around for some time, and they’re currently working on finishing up a debut LP.  Musically, they’ve got a punk rock attitude, though their sound has allegiance to Texas history, incorporating twanging guitars and country-style solos into their catchy numbers.  Live, they’re energetic, whilst playing songs you’ll want to sing along to for the rest of the night.  Good music is both creative and fun, and I know these guys definitely epitomize those two aspects.

Show Preview: Torres + Lady Lamb the Beekeeper @ Mohawk (6/12)

torres

Date Wednesday, June 12th
Location Mohawk – Inside
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

If you’re looking for a show full of powerful female songwriters, then you better make your way out to the Mohawk on Wednesday night. You’ll be greeted by three incredibly talented ladies, and their accompanying bands.  Torres is the headliner and the project of Mackenzie Scott, touring behind her excellent self-titled LP.  She’ll be preceded by the incredibly talented Lady Lamb and the Beekeeper, who released Ripley Pine to rave reviews earlier this week.  And of course, we couldn’t be prouder to throw our support behind Austin’s own Dana Falconberry, who will open up the night for you all. It’s going to be an evening full of beautiful voices and intimate moments–you can’t miss out on this one. Here’s tunes from LL and Dana to get you in the mood.
