Final Single from Frank Smith

We’ve tried to keep you close in the loop as Frank Smith has released several singles from their new album, Before You Were Born, which will hit on January 19th.  We’ve got the final single from the band, and it continues to build on the strength of the earlier singles.  For me, there’s a darkness that lurks beneath this track, but the attention to details is what really grabs me–just listen for the trickling keys.  This song seems to wander a bit, giving you the feeling that this track’s a haunted traveler, perhaps leading up to some abstract association with the title.  I’m just guessing.

Free Week Recommendations for Wednesday

Ah, have you had yourself a little blast thus far? Who doesn’t want to enjoy Free Week?  Wednesday, in my mind, seems a little slower than the rest of the nights, perhaps giving you a breather before a most excellent weekend line-up.  Still, there are definitely some acts that you need to check out, if you know what’s good for you!

Residual Kid (8 PM) @ Antones — This is one of the youngest and most talented acts in town, so you definitely need to be there as these guys make the town proud. And, if you stick around, you can catch the Rocketboys.

Literature @ 29th Street Ballroom — Literature is perhaps one of the best up-and-coming bands, and you’ll be hearing more from us in regards to these guys in the next few weeks, as we’re working on editing an awesome video of the band. Oh, and there’s some other great groups like No Mas Bodas and Milk Thistle.

Free Week Recommendations for Tuesday!

So, by this point in time, Free Week in Austin is upon us, and I hope you’re all out there enjoying the great local music our fair city has to offer.  There’s too many great shows and great bands to hit up, so I’m going to try and help out by suggesting the big hitters every day.  The following list is for tomorrow night, that way you can plan accordingly:

The Midgetmen (10:30) @ Red 7 — Good old rock n’ roll from a band who’ve been banging it out for years–plus they gave me $5 to put them on this list.

Guns of Navarone (Show Starts @ 6:30) @ The Mohawk — RayRay swears by this band’s alt-country sound–says they’re the best in town.

Frank Smith @ The Mohawk — We’ve talked to you about Frank Smith before, so we’re not going to go on and on about this band, but if you haven’t heard em’, go see em.

Leatherbag @ Skinny’s Ballroom — They’re one of Austin’s hardest working acts, and their album in 2011 made our Best of Texas List.

New Music from Peter and the Wolf

Personally, I think that Redding “Red” Hunter is one of Austin’s best-kept secrets.  For me, this is a good thing, as I’m in on the secret, but for a lot of people, it’s horrible as they miss out on a lot of incredibly written songs.  Red’s project Peter and the Wolf has a new album out titled Easy Mountain, which you can pick up now.  His music has always been intricately personal, soft and all the while supremely inspiring.  There’s something about his recording process that gives him an intimate emotional appeal, while he carefully crafts melody with his guitar.  You’re not going to find a more enjoyable listening experience this week, I guarantee!

Show Preview: NYE 2 @ Cheer Up Charlies (12/31)

New Years Eve is upon us, and I doubt any of you people have really solid plans for what you’re doing to celebrate.  Well, let us assist you in that department with news of a party we’re helping sponsor going down at Cheer Up Charlies on the East Side.  The show features an awesome “locals only” line-up in the form of Gold Spine, TV Torso, Ringo Deathstarr, Young Girls, Marmalakes, Sleep Good, The Zoltars, The Sour Notes and a Mouthfeel DJ set to end the night.  Giveaways will also be handed out out in between each set by Fricano’s Deli, Strut Boutique, Birds Barbershop, Tiffs Treats, and The Highball.  More information on this badass event with complete set times for each band can be seen over on the event’s facebook page.

New Music From Black Books

While we sort of creep further into hibernation during the Holiday season, it’s nice to receive a solid track from local band Black Books.  The track, called “Out the Door” is available for free below and will be a part of the group’s upcoming debut full length album due out on Valentine’s Day 2012.  It’s a great tune full of those reverb laden vocals and slow burn we’ve grown to love about the band.  Black Books also recently recorded a cover of classic tune “Love Fool” by The Cardigans which is available to stream over on soundcloud.  Should be a big year for this band.

Brand New Jam from Literature!

If you’ve been following this year, you’ve probably heard me hype up local Austin band, Literature.  Well, prepare yourself for a whole lot more, as the band’s about to release a phenomenal record for you all to enjoy.  The record is titled Arab Spring, and pretty much every song is an absolute gem.  The band’s been kind enough to let us pick our favorite jam, which, believe you me, has been a difficult task this weekend.  I chose, “Grifted,” as there’s a bit of elegant charm, and immeasurable catchiness to go along.  This song should definitely demonstrate why I’m so excited about this band! The record’s so solid that I’m sure someone will pick it up once the band self-releases the album here in the next few weeks, and if they don’t, fuck it, I’ll do it.

Great New Song fromTiger Waves

If you checked out our Top Texas Albums List, you might have noticed a little known band, Tiger Waves.  In my opinion, the band deserves all sorts of adoration, and this new track should definitely prove to you that you basically need to spend your weekend getting your hands on their old works, falling in love, then enjoying this new track. Word on the streets is that 2012 should feature a new record from the Austin/Chicago based group.  In this new song, music sort of trickles in carefully, then the vocals harmoniously dance atop it all, creating this dreamy song that you won’t want to miss.  Do yourself a favor and spread the word; bands like this deserve all the love they can get.

More New Frank Smith Jams

We’re getting closer and closer to the release of Frank Smith’s brand new record here in January of 2012.  The group has already leaked “Monsters,” and in their promise to release three of the tracks, they’ve got “A Decline” for you this time around. From what we’ve been given so far, Before You Were Born will feature a more ornate sound, carefully crafted to evoke maximum emotion from the listener.  I really enjoy the way this song unfolds, seemingly alternating the pace of the track without ever losing a bit of the magic.  Seems like it should be a great 2012 for Frank Smith.

New (ish) Tune from Tiger Waves

Often times I get a bit saddened, thinking that the Austin music scene seems to be in sort of a rut, but going back over this year’s releases, I realized there are some definite local gems.  One of the ones I completely forgot about is Only Good Bands Have Animal Names by Tiger Waves.  Don’t know how I stumbled upon it, but it’s definitely worth a visit.  Still, to get to the point, the band released a new single not too long ago, so I thought I’d give it a look see. It’s this building number that trickles ever so carefully, sort of in the manner that Ducktails constructs songs. It’s a song that takes you on a quiet journey, and sometimes, those are the best to take.
