Show Preview: Real Estate @ the Parish (11/16)

Date Wednesday, Nov. 16th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $13 from Frontgate

I have no idea how this show hasn’t sold out as of Monday night.  Opening the night is Big Troubles, who’ve released their Romantic Comedy just recently, and it’s done fairly well with the fans, not to mention this writer.  That alone warrants attendance, yet the big headliner is Real Estate. These kids have pretty much dominated the news headlines all over the Internet since their inception, and the band’s October release of Days, got all sorts of praise.  This is the type of show people dream about, so go on and get yourself a ticket.  Oh, and to top it off, it all gets played through the amazing sound of the Parish; now if I could only get them to lower their beer prices!

Show Preview: Gold Leaves, AA Bondy @ the Parish (11/13)

Date Sunday, Nov. 13th
Location The Parish
Doors 800 pm
Tickets $15 from Frontgate

One of the shows I’ve been anticipating since it was announced is this show featuring two of my favorite bands, AA Bondy and Gold Leaves.  AA Bondy is touring behind his new record Believers, but more importantly is the appearance of Gold Leaves.  Their record, The Ornament, has been playing around my house since it was released in August on Hardly Art, and it is still going strong.  It’s comprised of beautifully ornate pop tunes, which I’m sure will sound remarkable inside the Parish.  It’s got great sound, and with these great bands, you won’t want to miss this show.

Whalers On Daytrotter

I’ll apologize now for neglecting the Daytrotter website that has been so solid for what seems like an eternity at this point.  With that out of the way, I was pleasantly surprised to see our local ATH A2W band Whalers as the featured band of the day.  The guys grab a lengthly 5 song live in-studio set highlighting their short career in the music business.  Below you can find a live version of the song “Magic Tricks” which was the first tune that started turning heads around here.  Head on over now to grab yourself some free music by this up and coming local band.

Show Preview: Gang Gang Dance @ the Mohawk (10/3)

Date Monday, October 3rd
Location Mohawk
Doors 630p
Tickets $11 from Frontgate

I know, I know, Taking Back Sunday is playing Monday night, but this show over at the Mohawk is going to be far better, I promise. Some of the most creative indie music being made is coming to our town tonight courtesy of Gang Gang Dance.  They’re fresh off the summer release of their album, Eye Contact.  Their known for extravagant shows, and lets hope this is no exception.  But, you get twice as lucky if you come early, as opening band Prince Rama are a force to be reckoned with in their own right.  From what I know, PR brings one of the best live acts to town, so you couple that with Gang Gang Dance and you’re left with one brilliant show that’s a can’t miss. Pretty killer way to start off October with our friends at the Mohawk.

Show Preview: Appleseed Cast @ The ND (8/20)

Date 8/20/11
Location The ND
Doors 900p
Tickets $11 @ Frontgate

The CAST!!  That’s right ladies and gents, one of my favorite bands of all time The Appleseed Cast are making a much anticipated stop into Austin this Saturday night at the ND.  These guys have been doing their thing for so long now and I’m amazed that they still manage to make powerful music despite some people claiming they’ve lost it.  Heck, their song “Middle States” from the EP of same title released earlier this year is easily one of my top played songs on the old itunes.  They’ve still got what it takes kids.  In other news, I see no word of an opener on the ND website or via The Cast site so it looks like you’ll need to be on time for this one.

New Music from Quiet Company

The guys in Quiet Company have been hard at work the last few years, building a large fan base in Austin, and moving their popularity beyond our fair city.  On October 4th, the band will release their latest album, We Are All Where We Belong. They’ve been kind enough to offer the public a free glimpse of the record with the song “Fear & Fallacy, Sitting in a Tree.”  It’s based around a piano structure, and as it bursts into a pop euphoria, you’ll notice some similarities to the old tunes of Ben Kweller. It’s gentle, it’s hook-laden, and it’s just a joy to listen to, so give yourself a chance to familiarize yourself with Quiet Company.

New Tunes from Wheeler Brothers

It’s hard keeping updated with the ever-growing masses of music coming out of Austin, but every now and then you just have to stop and revisit the good tunes this town has to offer. Lately I’ve been listening to some of the tracks from Wheeler Brothers, who’ve just put out their album, Portraits.  It’s definitely appealing to my softer side, the one drenched in my dad’s love of Americana and folk music.  But, don’t think this is going to be an entirely weepy affair, as the great thing about the country-tinged outfit is that they still maintain a great bit of pop sensibility.  Sink your teeth into this song, and go get yourself a copy of Portraits.
