Show Preview: The Walkmen at Stubbs (10.7)

A few years back, when the Walkmen announced they were going on hiatus, we here at ATH were a little bummed, as we’re self-avowed superfans. But, it was understandable; they had side projects, they’d been at it for nearly two decades, so sure, we were sad, but we got it. Then, this last year they decided to get the band back together, and RayRay rushed off to catch one of their sets in Rhode Island; he said Hamilton still had the power in voice, which is always a selling point. So, this weekend, while I’ve aged out of ACL attendance, I still get a chance to see the Walkmen at Stubbs for their Official After Show. If they play “In the New Year” and “the Rat” we all win, but I’ll be looking for those deep cuts. Opening act L.C. Franke should be on after doors at 8 PM; grab tickets HERE.

Show Preview: Lewsberg @ Hotel Vegas (10.5)

If you’re one of the three people in Austin reading this site, might I encourage you to join me tomorrow night over at Hotel Vegas? Dutch outfit Lewsberg, who we’ve been covering for a few years, are headed to our town, fresh on the back of their excellent Out and About LP (12XU). I know there are tons of folks in the greater city limits who love “post-punk,” or the like, so this is certainly a show you’ll want to catch; it’s like if you were taking the modern trends and styles and spinning it through the wheels of Calvin Johnson’s DIY joy-machine, with some mixtures of Broadcast/Stereolab thrown in to be cool. Plus, Hotel Vegas got it right, with the band playing at 11, so you can still get home in a reasonable hour, though I suggest sticking around to catch Cast of Thousands, the new band fronted by Max of Flesh Lights. Tickets are HERE. Heard Mark from THEMM will be there too; he always brings boxes of sliders!

Sun June Share Mixed Bag Single

There are a lot of really great songs in the Sun June catalog, but if I’m being honest, “Mixed Bag” might have quickly risen to the top of my charts. Something about it feels like home, something that feels like Texas (and yes, I know there’s a mention of Texas, so its more than subliminal!); it feels like a cruise down the road with a carload of your best friends, windows down as the night’s just cool enough to feel a breeze, and still warm enough to make you sweat. Despite it feeling like a Texan teen dream, digging deep reveals all these striking little earworms the group carefully laid into the mix on this tune. Bad Dream Jaguar is out on October 20th via Run For Cover.

Semihelix Share Renovate

Of all the acts in Austin, a band that I’m always happier than not to hear from is Semihelix; they’ve promised a new 7″ before the year’s up, so we wanted to make sure they had your attention. While their last single was hitting some dreamy jangles, this one seems to peel it all back, driving the sweetness home in the presentation. For me, I absolutely love Geannie’s vocals here, particularly when they get dubbed for the backing vocals too. There’s a nice little sonic turn too, letting the track dwell in some late 90s rock n’ roll territory as it draws to a close, with an added bit of piano thickening up the mixture here. We’ll keep you posted when we know more about that 7″!

Voxtrot Share Another Fire

Whatever led to the Voxtrot reformation a few years back, well, we’ve all benefitted from it. Be it their reissuing of B-Sides or Compilations, or now, a fresh new tune, I’m so very happy they’ve taken to writing music together again. That said, almost all of them have been working on projects through the years, so they’re songwriting is definitely still sharp. For the opening moment, you get Jason Chronis throwing down a thick bass line that allows Ramesh to weave his melodic wizardry through your speakers. Then, we hit the minute mark and the party kicks off with drums and keys joining in, providing this huge bounce that allows the track to develop its rising action. When that chorus drops, the tune just soars, harkening back to the band’s heyday when they couldn’t help but deliver insatiable hooks. They’ve definitely delivered, with a huge hook-laden ballad that takes their infectious early vibes and brings it into the band’s present. Fingers crossed there’s more on the way!

Holy Wire Offer Latest Single

At our annual SXSW party last year, we were stoked to have Holy Wire on that bill; Alalin Paladis has been really diving into charming indiepop, harnessing the pieces of nostalgia we adore and continuing to push them those sounds. On the latest single from the project, you have a dancefloor ready number, punching the groove from the get go, with Paladis’ vocals soaring as they are wont to do. Interestingly, the musical element, and the euphoric vocal burst from Alain seem hell-bent on reaching euphoria, but lyrically, it seems like the song’s about retracing moments of regret, so you’ve got this class between concept and style…something right up my alley. The tune’s going to be on a cassingle, so grab it now HERE!

Good Morning Drop Two New Singles

It seems like our pals in Melbourne based Good Morning have been a mainstay on these pages for many years now and we always eagerly await new music from the band. Imagine the excitement when today we got word of not one, but two new singles as part of a new double release through their label Polyvinyl. The first track, “dog years,” features that familiar, jangly sound from the lads while the second track “queen of comedy,” is a more somber and mellow tune. Somehow both compliment each other beautifully.

And hey! Good Morning are coming to Austin later this month with Frankie Cosmos at Mohawk. Tickets are available now.

More from Feeling Small

It seems like every week we get to open up a delicious treat from Feeling Small, the solo project of Chase Weinacht. This song, perhaps, has Chase returning ever so slightly to where we first encountered him in Marmalakes, building this heavy brood that seems like it could erupt at any moment, splashing into this piece of bombast. But, it’s held back, holding tight to the tension that pulls you inside; Weinacht’s voice is recorded perfectly by local engineer Michael Landon, balancing the intimacy atop that tense ascent. All of it smashes to a close, a cleansing of sorts that lets us sit whilst we await the next piece in Feeling Small puzzle.

TVs Daniel Preps Never Change

Daniel Fried has been one of our favorite artists in the Austin scene, playing with Bad Sports and leading Video, but as of late, he’s been focusing on TVs Daniel. The group will be dropping a new LP, Never Change, in just a few weeks, so I wanted to put it on people’s radar outside of our fair city. There’s definitely a bit of a pop tilt in the songwriting on the singles below, though Fried’s past breathes a bit of tenacity into hook-laden rock n’ roll. You’re guaranteed to have a bit of fun, and still walk away feeling like you’re tough as nails; look for the record on September 22nd.

MoonKill Share Murderhouse Single

MoonKill are a fairly new Austin act on the scene, coming at us with the promise that they live somewhere in the world darkened punk realms where all things Danzig are held sacred. There’s an early single from their The Kong Sessions EP that feels as if its channeling the Misfits, but this new tune has the feel of a slightly more metal tinged go, particularly in the way the guitars seem to be descending and ascending in various scales. Even within the confines of the howls and growls, there’s something in the band that feels very much like you’re driving West on I-10 in an old Cadillac with your hair blowing from beneath your cowboy hat…basically Danzig fronting Clutch…and I’m not mad at that! The group celebrate their forthcoming release with a show on September 15th at 13th Floor, accompanied by My Education and more!
