Pleased to Meet You: Charley Horse

Our friend Kevin, who used to operate in Austin’s Allgood, reached out with his newest project Charley Horse, so we wanted to be sure we hipped you to the dreamy landscape that’s he working with now that he’s got a new band. As the album art would hint at, the group are playing with bit of tropical psychedelia, flirting with the genre’s pop boundaries, particularly on “Exercise.” When you get to the second of the tunes, “Weather,” it seems like the group are playing in a more relaxed groove, hitting the perfect notes when they get to that soaring chorus. Always nice when your friends write great tunes; we’ll keep you posted as we hear more from the new project.

Rad Gnar Drop Dead Strings

Our friends in Rad Gnar definitely have kept themselves busy throughout the last year, and I’m going out on a limb and tossing this new single as one of the best tunes they’ve put together. There’s a little moog action running through, so grabs on to a little of this sort late 90s emo or even-Rentals vibes in there. But, for a band dedicated to keeping the spirit of punk and skating alive, they still manage to spin a bit of heavy riffage and guitar-mony work into their songs; this gives the band the perfect balance of hard edge and sugary sweetness, keeping you coming back time and time again. Look for the Dead Strings EP from the band this today!

Twain Shares King of Fools Single

New Austinite Matthew Davidson, aka Twain, has a new track out there, and with it, we can only hope that it signals a new LP on the horizon. There’s something special about Davidson’s songwriting, something that feels naturally cinematic in nature. Through the verses on this song, there’s something both wistful and spritely, setting up the vocal meandering of the chorus, where Matthew clearly flexes his voice for the audience. Honestly, his range is all over this track, stretching to his unexpected notes here, settling into angelic moments there, all letting us rejoice in his craft. This single is out now via Keeled Scales, so let’s hope we get something more real real soon!

SXSW Interviews: Walt Disco

Well just in case you weren’t ready for SXSW to kick off in a couple of weeks, you’ve clearly seen that the ATH crew is more then ready. We’ve been dropping these interviews every day for the last few weeks now with no plans of slowing down until the bands stop responding or the festival week arrives. Have you started planning yet? Half Dream Music Return with Too Much Single

After all the praise I through at Half Dream‘s Monster of Needing EP, it seems only natural that I follow up with the band’s latest single, hinting at what’s coming later this year. You’re going to, of course, marvel at the power of Paige Berry’s voice; she’s got this dominating control that can spin a melody into a softened growl, which is matching up well with the band’s sound on this new track. It is, well, incendiary, firing off heavy riffs that bring in the punch almost immediately, turning the group’s dreamier folk nature into a force to be reckoned with, yet it never loses their personality. Excited to hear what’s in store for us later this year.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share She Spins

We’re about a month away from the release of the new LP from Letting Up Despite Great Faults, and they’re dropping another stunning single on you for Bandcamp Friday. On this one, I love the dueling guitar lines, one jangling throughout, while the other has this more crystalline nature to it; they play off each other perfectly, creating an imbalance that leads into the perfect melody for the vocals. Mike’s voice is super soft here, and it allows the emotional appeal to work its magic, particularly when he gets a little backing harmony to provide a supportive lift. If you’re digging what you hear (why wouldn’t you?!), then be sure to throw some cash down today so you can grab IV when it drops in March.

Good Looks Announce Bummer Year

Austin’s Good Looks has been banging about for a few years now, but they’re finally ready to drop their debut LP, Bummer Year. On this first single you get Tyler Jordan’s drawl stretching across an expanse of West Texas, vast and open, with little behind it aside from a light light strum and cymbal. Suddenly, the bass and drums drop in and the song begins to soar, with Jordan’s vocals stretching even further in the chorus. Really, it’s all about the chorus throughout, pushing the band into a more traditional rock territory that bridges the band’s home state and the modern musical climate. Expect good things from Good Looks, with Bummer Year out on April 8th via Keeled Scales.

Blushing Drop the Fires Single

We’re not too far off from getting to hear the entirety of Possessions from our friends Blushing, but they keep teasing us along with these singles. The latest is built on this huge sonic cliff, raising the listener while the the vocals sail out; it’s like a black and white version of someone standing on the edge of the Hawksbill Crag, letting their voice flow over the Buffalo River below. But, not content to settle in one mode, the track actually builds heavier and heavier, pounding through your speakers as the band push towards the tune’s end. They’re at the top of their game, so grab the LP from Kanine Records before it sells out; it drops on February 18th.

Don’t Get Lemon Announce Hyper Hollow Heaven

I know we’re all downtrodden, at least if I’m to believe everyone’s personal feeds, so thumping beats with masterful hooks are just what the doctor ordered going into 2022 full speed, and thus, I give you Don’t Get Lemon. The Austin three-piece are crafting this danceable brand of pop that’s built on layered textures that build and build throughout their new single. You can easily hear the pulsing beat here, rushing the song through your speakers; little electronic flourishes also make their way out, but it’s the atmospheric wash mixed with the heavy vocals that has me intoxicated. If you can hear the promise in this tune, then perhaps we can convince you that your money will be well spent by grabbing Hyper Hollow Heaven this coming March!

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Corners Pressed Video

In other news of things I’ve skipped the last few weeks, this new video from Letting Up Despite Great Faults; I did cover the original single though! So, here we are with the band jamming out in their practice space, each person getting a little solo time to walk about while the band jams around them. I love that you get a little bit of the live Kent vibe, as he’s one of my favorite bass players to watch. The band will be dropping their new album, IV, in early March, with a tour to follow out West with other ATH faves Blushing. You can pre-order the LP HERE.
