Blushing Announce Possessions LP

Long long ago, in a galaxy here in Austin, we helped release one of Blushing‘s earlier EPs; they’ve since gone onto bigger things, and now the news is out that they’ve signed with Kanine to release their new LP, Possessions. The first single is a delight, not just because it features Miki Berenyi (of Lush), but also because it shows continued growth in their sound. I love the various movements within the song itself; this song’s got those dreamy jangles to open up the score, but also fades right into this gritty indie rock feel, before splitting wide open to allow for Miki’s voice to drape across the sonic groundwork they’ve put before you. Should be exciting to hear the whole LP when it comes to fruition; the new LP drops in February of next year.

Sarah La Puerta Announces Strange Paradise

Former Austinite (now New Yorker) Sarah La Puerta was long a staple of our music scene, through various projects, but perhaps most notable was as part of the old lineup of Tele Novella; she also graced us by sharing a tune for our Slack Capital 2 project with Eric from Big Bill. Anyways, she’s just announced her debut solo effort for Perpetual Doom records, and dammit if the open single doesn’t just knock it out of the park. Upon my first listen, I thought there was this simplicity to the craft, which allowed for the vocals to really sparkle; there’s this classic beauty to her sound here, something so effortlessly timeless. Still, go back and listen to the track, you can hear little quiet bass bubbles, ornate guitar flourishes and an evolving electronic ambiance. It all makes for a powerful statement that is sure to be fulfilling upon its November 12th release!

Zero Percent APR Drop Halbum LP

Let’s not beat around the bush here, Zero Percent APR is the alter ego of our favorite Austin ghouls, Being Dead; you might remember we helped the band put out this rad EP a few years back. Well, their here today to bewitch you with their Halloween album, just out on cassette via Spared Flesh Records. This collection of themed music still has the same experimentation and devilish humor that the band always utilizes in their work; it still has me wondering why they aren’t the biggest band in the world right now? Seriously, how is a band with these gifts and a rocking live show not bigger than Shakey Graves? I have no idea, but Halbum is a fun collection of tunes from the ZPAPR, something for you from the underworld.

Natalie Jane Hill Shares Plants and Flowers That Do Not Grow Here Video

The last month or so we’ve been really high upon Natalie Jane Hill‘s new work from her forthcoming Solely LP; it’s one of the more striking LPs to come out of Austin this year, which is saying a lot. On this one, somehow this seems more personal, almost like a secret she’s sharing with listeners. Her finger-strumming style creates this delicate feel, letting the power of her voice boom, giving her this sound that feels matured beyond many like-minded peers. Light strings provide some small subtleties that buoy the track, adding detail to the song’s empty crevices. Dear Life Records will release Solely on October 29th.

Hunter Cahill Shares Falling Down

Every month you get a new Hunter Cahill tune, at least until we’ve got all the tracks from his album Some Things You Don’t Know About Me. This one has this bouncing indie rock vibe to it, something built on a kind of bounding rhythmic line that lets piano notes tinker and guitar flutter when necessary. Perhaps one of the reasons I’ve really been all over this track is the subject matter, with the narrator admitting to turning to drugs at a young age to cope with the every day reality they face; it’s something I can personally relate to, and I’m sure I’m not the only one in that boat. There’s a certain intimacy that gets shared when you can find common ground like this, but I stand by the song’s musical joy as well! Keep your ears peeled back as you’ll get a few more songs before the year’s up; we’ll do our best to keep you posted.

 

Stream Semihelix’s New LP, Recoil

Pretty huge release day out there, with some ATH faves like Ducks LTD and Cindy dropping new albums, but I wanted to stay a little closer to home with a record we really love around here: Semihelix‘s Recoil. Honestly, I think Geannie Friedman and company really hit it out of the park here; the album plays in the realm with roots dating back to post-punk, but it uses that as a touchstone, dancing here and there. Take “Mourning Light,” which features this bubbling bass line and soothing melody, definitely taking some notes from the Sarah Records catalog, then jump ahead a few tracks to “Translucent,” using more pace and urgency to push the melodic notes. It all works so perfectly, you’re sort of shocked that this is the band’s debut. Me, well, I’m partial to “Come Around,” with Friedman’s best vocal performance, at least to my ears. Go ahead and give this album a few spins this morning.

Hovvdy Share Blindsided Video

Wanted to write about how much I enjoyed this new Hovvdy video; it’s really hard not to enjoy what they’re doing right now; the sounds are too too good. This very much just feels like home to me, and not just because they’re from Austin; it just has that familiarity to it, that vibe that only you and your closest friends could create together. I’d go into further details, but I’m grumpy because I like to follow rules, and this song had an “Embargo” on it until 9 am CST. So I don’t wanna write more. The song’s all that matters anyways, right? No need to copy and paste the press release. No need to link it to Phoebe Bridgers. Just listen to the song from their new album True Love, which is out Friday via Grand Jury.

Neckbolt Announce Midwestern Drawl

I’ll be honest, sometimes the Austin scene gets a little stale; it tends to feed off of its own bravado, then implodes to champion what sells…but honestly, its felt mostly safe as of late, until I heard this new track from Neckbolt. The band is comprised of various local figures, and a few out-of-towners, but they’re building this deranged twang-core that feels like an unholy Texan amalgam. Those gritty blues guitar sounds are fuzzed beneath this heavy wash of atmosphere, dripping with tambourine presence. Honestly, it’s like taking acid house vibes from the UK, throwing in sort of the dark experimental side of Liars, then throwing it all on stage in Marfa; it pretty much rules. Midwestern Drawl is out November 5th via Spider Dispatch Unit.

I’ve been posting a whole lot of singles and stuff this week, mostly because I like to over-indulge and see who is listening. No one, apparently. But, why not wrap up this week of working harder than I ever have before by sharing some cool records I liked that drop today? Yeah? Ok.

Smoke Bellow – Open for Business (Trouble in Mind)

Semihelix Share Will It Take

Not sure if you’ve got Semihelix on your radar, but this is one of the recent Austin bands I’m super stoked to jam. I love the way the song rushes in immediately, letting those jangling notes meet up with some fuzzy distortion creeping in from the distance. Geannie Friedman delivers two great performances; she toys with the song’s dreamy nature during the verses, but goes full pop when her voice soars in the chorus. Be sure to stick around too, as the fade into the ending is a real nice touch. It’s pop rock with a real edge, and just enough of that DIY spirit to be sure the band’s Recoil will be on your radar when they drop the full LP on October 1st via Mariel Recording Company.
