You thought they were done! But no, one of my favorite Austin bands, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, have found the time to come up with another album, and we’ve got that first single below here. I love the dense nature of this tune; the way the synth work stabs through the walls of guitar noise creates like this extra outer layer you have to swim through just to find Mike Lee’s melodic whispers in the dark. While the guitars have that dreamy front, a careful ear will reveal just the slightest jangling underbelly, which you know gets to the heart of my listening habits. What a stellar way to make a return to the fray. Be on the look out for more news about a forthcoming LP!

Hovvdy Share Two Brand New Singles

Another great record from Hovvdy is on the horizon, and with a little over a month away, the band opted to share 2 new singles today. I love the distinctive differences in the two tracks, setting up the album for a nice little mixture of sounds sure to charm. “Junior Day League” has this feel like it was leftover from the JEW Clarity demos; there’s something about the drum work and the vocals here that just feels like nostalgic emo pop. Plus, I love the spirit of the video; it’s got a joyous beat, so why not give it a little joyous nature…it’s a rarity nowadays. Then, skip to the next tune, “Around Again,” and you get a more melancholy approach, one that’s matched with a video that feels a bit more grainy, a bit more warn for this world. True Love is out October 1st via Grand Jury.

Brother Sports Share Won’t See You Again

Having released their iii EP at the tail-end of December, Austin’s Brother Sports return with a surprisingly uplifting song about dealing with grief. Opening with this sort of ghostly surf feel, it quickly jumps right into this Strokes meets Growlers garage rocker, tapping your toes all along the way. In contrast to the joyous feel, the song’s lyrics deal with how sometimes you just never get over grief, and I guess sometimes it just grows with you. I think for me, with that message and the music, you just have to take it in stride, realize we’re only here a short time, and carry that grief like you would carry joy, just as a piece of the puzzle that makes up your being. Or, of course, you can just enjoy a good pop rock number as it is!

New Music from Austin ft. TC Superstar + Nolan Potter

Well, things in Austin seem to be progressing along nicely, despite the fact that the city’s kind of a walking shit-show. But, a couple of rad jams popped up over we thought you might be into.

TC Superstar released their latest single from the forthcoming As Seen on TV. This jam has a little less pop and burst, and more of a subtle dance vibe. It kind of reminds me of the later LCD stuff, where you were grooving, but you were most likely watering the plants around your apartment. Their new LP drops on September 17th.

We’ve also got the latest from Nolan Potter, who will be releasing his band’s latest opus, Music is Dead, via Castle Face Records at the end of September. This song operates much as I expect the album to, moving in and out of incredible guitar freakouts and thunderous percussion, only to jettison off into the wizarding world of Harry Potter for a moment or two.

Half Dream Share I Am My Own God

I’ve been championing Half Dream since last year’s Monster of Needing EP, and it seems like Paige Berry and company have outdone themselves on their latest single. In the opening two minutes, you get Berry angelically maneuvering her voice through this dreamy landscape, in part aided by the ambient craft of local legend Thor Harris; I love how there’s this natural solitude to these early moments, gradually birthing the song into our consciousness. Then the song strikes! Drums pound ominously, giving the song this heavy depth that seems perfectly suited for the powerful vocal portrayal we’re given. If you’re in Austin, you can celebrate the band’s new single at their show this evening at the Far Out Lounge.

Curved Light Announces Spirit Echo

Five years in the making, it’s time for Austin’s Curved Light to release the debut LP, Spirit Echo. Our first listen shows Peter Tran coming to grips with the collective past, present and future, with loops and beats battling for supremacy, competing for relevance in the listener’s ear. At times, it might feel disconcerting, as if nothing’s distinct enough to really make its own rise to the top. But, then compile that with the visual imagery and poetic inclusion of the video, uniting all the sounds for a common goal…a push forward for Tran and his sound. Spirit Echo is out on October 1st via Gentle Reminder.

Alex Riegelman Shares I Don’t Know How to Care

As a member of Big Bill, you’d be forgiving for your misconceptions about Alex Riegelman‘s solo work, but with his latest single as a testament, it’s clear his musical touch goes far and wide. There’s definitely a playfulness in his vocal approach, and also perhaps in the song, which definitely ties back to the Big Bill lineage. But, at times he’s building these avant pop moments, akin to Of Montreal or Destroyer. Then the guitars jangle and the cymbal work comes fast, giving the song a little shimmy and a little set up that comes crashing in like an anthemic pop rock chorus that erupts for the audience. Be sure you’re all caught up on your required Alex Riegelman listening; he’s all over the place, in the best sort of way!

Alexaone Share Electric Sickness

I’m sitting over here, fully expecting this Alexalone record to be absolutely huge, ready to cheer on a few folks I know involved in the project. For me, this feels like the track that could really hook people, as it has the immediacy that you mightn’t have found in the first few singles. Alex and Hannah combine their voices in an almost meditative state, matched by the steadiness of Sam’s drums and the guitar chords, strangely feeling like an incredibly unexpected homage to Sonic Youth. Of course, that wouldn’t be complete without the explosiveness, which you do get as a sort of semi-chorus of feuding noise. Please make Alexaloneworld huge; it’s out August 13th via Polyvinyl.

TC Superstar Announce As Seen On TV

If you’ve been living in Austin the last few years, and you love a good show, you’ve hopefully had a chance to catch the pop sensation TC Superstar, who always encourage their live sets to turn into full on dance parties. Well, it’s time for the rest of the world to take note, and hopefully people will catch on now that the group has announced As Seen On TV, their new LP. Listening to the first single from the record, you can hear their influences, falling somewhere between Chromeo and Hot Chip, though I like to think there’s a little more thought in what they’re doing, considering all the songs generally have a choreographed live set up. Bob along, let yourself free, then wait for the new album to drop in September.

Hovvdy Announce True Love

I’m sure by the time I post this tune that it’ll likely already be everywhere, but we’ve got to represent the ATX and Hovvdy, right? For me, this track, and possibly the whole of the record, feels very Austin at the moment, both musically and thematically. Musically speaking, the band employ good strum work and overlapping melodies in their vocals to craft this blistering pop vibe that sort of radiates prismatic colors though your speakers. Message-wise, the tune seems to hit at this exhaustion we’ve all faced the last few years, but how reliance upon loved ones has been able to carry us through…whether that’s a partner, friend or family. Expect the band’s True Love LP to be a huge success, dropping October 1st via Grand Jury.
