Hunter Cahill Shares Goddamn Single

When you press play on this new track from Hunter Cahill, you’ll get a muted guitar that opens up into the perfect rock ballad; it kicks in with this perfect punch of classic indie rock. Cahill has some vocal similarities to David Bazan, which definitely drew me into this tune, but I think the best moments here revolve around the chorus, allowing the guitars to hang up in the air, before crashing down with this emotional punch that eventually evolves into this soaring melodic burst. If you dig what you hear, keep an ear out, as Cahill will be releasing a new single every month as he gears up to share his new LP!

Levitation 2021 Announces Phase 1 Line Up (Oct. 28 -31)

Yes! The return of one of my favorite festivals/events in Austin. Long ago, Levitation was once Psych Fest, and it was glorious. Then it switched from Psych Fest to Levitation, then switching from one giant beautiful field to multiple venues, and honestly its been like the best part of SXSW! It’s the part where you get music heads chasing great bands like this year’s line-up featuring Black Midi, Chicano Batman, Tinariwen, The Hives, Japanese Breakfast and more! But, at least the 2019 version, it was pretty absent the free-swag army chasing beers and keychains. This year, the event will be spread out over four days, across venues like Stubbs, Mohawk, Cheer Up Charlies and Empire.

You can grab yourself some tickets right HERE, with more bands to be announced as the date draws near. And then check the recap of the 2019 experience!

Alexalone Shares Eavesdropper

There’s so many reasons to fall completely in love with the brand new track from Alexalone, the work of Alex Petersen and their friends. For starters, you’ve got Hannah of Lomelda jamming out on bass here, as well as our friend Sam from the Hermits/Infinites rocking out on drums. But, I also love the fact that the track operates between this sort of heavy prog and this sort of creative post-rock; the whole thing is this incredible jam session where you get to see the band really letting loose and hanging on each other’s musician ship thanks to the directing of Brittany Reeber. Alexaloneworld is shaping up to be a beast of an album; it drops on August 13th via Polyvinyl.

Sorry I Missed This: Abram Shook Shares No, Not Carolina

Going on vacation leaves you in some email pits of despair, but I think I’m officially out, as I’ve reached the end of all the missing emails with this great new Abram Shook tune. As was hinted at his last few singles, he’s crossing into that funky rock category, letting the guitar lines go on a nice little jiggling walk through the tune. Shook, for his part, has these softened vocals, almost like gasps of breath whispering into your ear. Again, we have Abram changing directions, giving us glimpses at his past, while forging new musical direction, which, if you ask me, makes him one of the stronger artists in our ATX hometown. Look for a new album on the horizon my friends.

Caleb de Casper Shares Too Many Boys Video

Let’s face it, Austin’s just not that weird anymore, but one act still trying to map out their own world is Caleb de Casper. He’s crafting his own brand of pop music, seemingly made up of parts of disco, new wave, hard rock and probably a little bit of everything in between. I love how this opens up with this galloping club stomp, before this swinging guitar allows Caleb to make a seductive entrance into the track, both sonically and visually. But, as the song breaks down, it blasts into this heavy rocker, packing a huge punch for the listener as he explains ‘what it is to be a gay man in 2021.’ His album Femme Boy is slated for release later this year!

Zachman Shares I Just Wanted to Be Well Video

Today seems like as good a day as any to just push out a bunch of incredible endearing pop rock tunes out into the world, so why not share this new video from Zachman! First, the song’s got tons of Austin love in it, with the footage covering the area near ATX’s Pennybacker Bridge, and being shot/directed by our friend Roger Ho! Still, the song has to offer something too, right? From the galloping drum lines to those ringing guitar jangles, it’s hard to find yourself not captivated by the natural exuberance that pervades this track. Plus, the video carries that spirit with a smiling performance from Johnny Zachman that shines right through the screen; his infectious spirit makes the song all the more endearing for me. You’ll find this track on the band’s forthcoming Lotto EP, but if you need a dose of that joy, stop by and catch the band sharing it live on June 23rd over at the Far Out Lounge.

The Narrow Escapes Return with New Singles

The Narrow Escapes have been quiet for almost a decade, but they return today with some jams on new label Tenth Temple Records (its ATH adjacent). The project is led by Art Silva, who played in Rose Selavy, and he’s joined by members of Meryll and Tres Oui, so you know that the songs are going to be energetic and hook-laden. “Cruise Life” is a little bit like the title, a nice little sailing trip off into the sunset, cruising through the seas with a nice little smile upon your face. “Night Owls” is a definite jam, and one you’d expect with the members involved; it feels like a power pop anthem crafted in the latest corners of the night, propulsive but just hinting at darkness. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more about what’s coming from the band and label!

Darkbird Drop Pop Hit

A few years ago, when we were throwing one of our ATH vs SOTO SXSW shows, we had Darkbird on the bill, and since then, we’ve been keeping tabs on one of that shows standout performers. This week, they’ve got this incredible bouncy pop tune ready for you all, produced by Walker Lukens, so you know there’s going to be hooks galore. I mean, the driving synth lines definitely feel like they’re here to provide you with the necessary energy, just bouncing and pumping your fists in the air as you sing along with your friends. I’m not always a straight pop fan, but when its this good, you can’t really turn away from it can you? No! So just turn it up!

Molly Burch Shares Heart of Gold Video

Molly Burch will be dropping Romantic Images at the end of the month, so we’ve got to keep you up to date by sharing her latest single and its accompanying video. As always, Molly’s voice is the star, able to hone in on its natural smokiness, but not afraid to let it broadcast angelic notes as she strikes the chorus. In the rhythm section you get pure steadiness, it actually makes the whole tune kind of dizzying, letting you tap your toes while your head spins with the vocals echoing in the distance. Captured Tracks will be dropping the new LP on July 23rd, and it’s destined to get raves, so don’t miss out!

New Music from Alex Riegelman

Are we Alex Riegelman stans? Uh, you bet we are! And why wouldn’t we be, as Alex is one of the kind souls of Austin’s music scene…and that doesn’t even scratch the surface of his songwriting ability. On his latest single “Once” you get to hear the other side of Alex (who stars in Big Bill), as he’s offering up this shuffling little pop number, fueled by these lightly jangling guitar riffs and uplifting synth lines. Honestly, the star, for me, is Alex’s vocal performance; I thought his opening verses were great, but then he erupts to let his pipes soar along with his guitar chops! Damn, that breakdown in the song’s close is stupendous. Get you some Alex!
