ATX Spotlight: The Bright Light Social Hour

Our Austin amigos in The Bright Light Social Hour have been around the ATX scene playing shows, festivals, and backyard bashes for many many years now. Over that long span of a career, the band has grown a solid and loyal fan base from years of working their asses off. With such a large catalogue of music, it may be bold to say this new track “Ouroboros ’20” is my favorite release from TBLSH, but hey I think it’s 100% true. The new song finds a group who have seemingly fully matured into a sound which can be dreamy and spacey, while also providing some lush, driving melodies. If you’re completely new to the band, this would be a great place to start.

TBLSH plan to release this song on a new album entitled Jude Vol. II on August 28th. Pre-orders are live now.

 

Daphne Tunes Share Thinkin on a Mem Video

Daphne Tunes is helmed by one of our dear friends, Santiago; he formerly fronted ATH act Growl (those LPs are $5!). But, don’t let our allegiance to our friends steer you away from the playful video below, directed by Santi himself. Plus, we’re really picky, and we only love the greatest voices out there…so just listen to those pipes and I think you’ll get why we love his work so much. I love the guitar work here too, the way it kind of shuffles up your feet, getting your body swinging naturally from side to side. Right now I’m thinkin’ on a mem, and missing this band’s live sets! Memory Keepers Share Forskalii Video

The Sour Notes are one of my favorite local Austin acts, particularly as they’ve really come into their own over the last few years. But, this is about two of their songwriters using a more electronic approach to exercise their musical muscles as Memory Keepers. Last week they dropped the Forskalii 7″, which features a nice Primal Scream cover (rumored to be praised by the band!). In this video for the A-side, the pulsating synths get mixed with live footage from the band’s last show, courtesy of photographs from Vineet Gordhandas; you’ll also find some great texture work, layering guitar lines and synth lines just beneath the wash of Jared’s vocoder-modified voice. It’s always fun when you try to tie the two bands together, trying to see where their pop sensibilities united in their different approaches to craft. Plus, if you enjoy it and grab the 7″, the band are donating all those funds to the NAACP-LDF…so everyone wins.

The Midgetmen Announce It Is Now Recursive

Austin rabble-rousers The Midgetmen aim to make amends for their five year recording absence by dropping the It Is Now Recursive EP on July 24th. Our first listen to the band’s newest output is a furious little 2 minute number, and an exercise in using one lyrical line for the entirety of a song (they warned you!). I love the way the song opens up, encompassing that live sound that’s rare to get on tape; kind of makes me want to run around my living room screaming along while I pour beer all over myself. It’s riotous and pure fun, with a nice little guitar flare in the song’s middle; everyone gets a solo! Plus, if you grab the EP, you’ll get a remix version of this tune that hints at the band’s future foray into more electronically enhanced grooves! If you need a song to get you up, load a bowl and hop on your yard work, this is the one!

American Friend Release Debut Single

For quite awhile now I’ve been touting Jana Horn (she dropped a song on Slack Capital 3 too) as one of Austin’s great voices. This past Friday, one of her projects, American Friend, released their debut single. She’s joined by Adam Jones, of Deep Time, for percussive elements, definitely building in some textures to thicken up the sound around her guitar and vocals. “His Energy Runs Backwards” might be the most traditional of the two tracks on this 7″, with the fragility of Horn’s voice carefully treading above the instrumentation; Jones jumps in the song’s latter half to join too. “Cancer City” shows the duo really moving beyond the boundaries of the genre, incorporating a squawking clarinet (courtesy of Carl Smith) to the intoxicating mixture of guitar and drums. Definitely something you should invest your time in today, if you so choose.

Slack Capital 3 Drops Tomorrow

Every so often, I team up with our friend Eric from Big Bill to curate Slack Capital compilations. This year, we began working early in the COVID shutdown, along with new help from the supreme booking team that is Howdy Gals. We’ve dropped a few tunes already from Christelle Bofale and Sun June, but we wanted to give you one last taste before the compilation goes live tomorrow. 100% of proceeds raised will go to Austin Justice Coalition…plus, since its only available on Bandcamp, a percentage of their profits is going to NAACP!

We wanted to illustrate the compilation’s broad musical swath, so we’ve got a little hip-hop, a touch of electro-pop, and a few beautiful ballads. The 41 track compilation goes live tomorrow!




The Sour Notes Share Dandy Video

It’s been a rough week for Austin music fans, with the shuttering of several venues along the Red River Cultural District; Barracuda hit the hardest for us, personally. Our various channels have been flooded by friends and fans saying goodbye, but what better way than with a fresh video from our friends The Sour Notes, who present you their latest video…shot at Barracuda. It’s classic guitar pop, with the bands nod to Galaxie 500’s fuzzy approach definitely apparent to my ears. It’s nostalgic too, especially if you’ve been at Barracuda and recognize the wooden panelling on the wall…so you get a great track and a nice nod to what’s now in the past. This tune appeared on a recent 7″, but will also featured on the group’s forthcoming More is the Pity LP. Hats off to Vineet Gordhandas for the footage itself! RIP Barry.

New Stuff from Austin w/ Brother Sports + Sailor Poon

Just because its quarantine, it doesn’t mean folks aren’t working on great music all over the world, but let’s focus on what’s here at home on our end. First up is the newest tune from Brother Sports; we’ve been covering a bunch of their singles in 2020, and they do it again, with sort of slow burning pop tune, coated lyrics and nice backing melodies. I don’t think this track would be out of place on that new Strokes record at all.


After that, we’ve got the debut album from Sailor Poon. They’ve been regarded, deservingly so, as one of Austin’s can’t miss acts for the last several years, putting on phenomenal live shows and carrying an aura of indifference and brashness that puts many punk peers to shame. Finally we get Sailor Poon’s First Album, and its 13 can’t miss hits by one of the baddest bands in town.

New Big Bill Jam

ATH Records alumi and favorite Austin rockers Big Bill dropped a new jam in your face on Friday, so in case you missed it…here we are. Those familiar with the band will no doubt notice that the song’s stripped of the band’s usual energetic pulse; this song feels more like the group’s narrating their lives as they mosey through the line at their “Company Picnic.” You even get little soundbites of water-cooler chatter, with the band making sure that every second of the song matters. So go ahead and indulge in a different side of the Bill, then go through their catalog and fall for the rest in all its absurdist glory.

Have Another New Holy Wave Tune

Looks like Nathan has you all set up for some nice streams over the weekend, but I’d also encourage you to check out this new tune from our Austin friends in Holy Wave. “Interloper” is the title track of the bands brand new album and features a lot of the dreamy and psych oriented sounds we’ve grown to love about the band over the years. This one certainly has a Pink Floyd influence behind it, but a more pop orientation. Chalk it up as another hit for the Austin legends.

Holy Wave will release new album Interloped on July 3rd via Reverberation Appreciation Society.
