New Ty Richards Tune Drops

I’ve really been enjoying the work of Ty Richards on the cycle for his newest album, Welcome to Flat Earth. He employs these simple little hooks, but on this song, he seems to stretch it out just beyond reason, crafting a wonky vibe that’s both captivating and odd. For me, perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay his work is that he really seems to be having a blast on everything he’s touched…that’s infectious for folks like me who try to listen with close ears. That new album will drop on April 20th, with a local Austin release show at Mosaic Sound Collective.

In exactly one month, you’ll all be able to get your hands on the new LP from Austin’s Thanks Light, but before we get you there, we’re here to share one of the singles off the record. This number has this innate bounce to it, particularly during the verses as the guitars give off a bit of a shuffling chugga-chugga. Personally, I like some of the spaces between verses, where the guitars seem to crest and fall down as the cymbals crash in your speakers. Another Austin band with a knack for writing catch pop rock tunes; look for Terrifire on May 11th via Enjoy Ears Records.

Enjoy the New Single from Being Dead

Austin’s Being Dead just crept upon my radar, but I’m really excited to be on notice about this new duo. On Friday they just dropped this ridiculously infectious new single, “Wild Man.” The track has this carefree indifference, an almost childlike playfulness, though you can hear roots in psych and folk…just performed with an enthusiastic stomp. While you can’t help but fall in love with the lead tune on the single, the flip side “Life Between Leafs” offers a glimpse of another side of the group…bedroom pop with the slightest hint of oddity hanging in the balance. Go on, give the single a stream.

SXSW Awards – 2018

Your friendly neighborhood ATH staff members have emerged from SXSW week and I think we’re all finally ready to reminiscence on what transpired. As we’ve done in the past, it seems like a perfect time to hand out some awards for the festival with superlatives that we made up like 5 minutes ago. Keep in mind we saw a lot of bands, had a bit to drink, and ventured out to more venues than we can possibly remember. So buckle up, hit the jump and see who we deemed worthy and deserving of our very prestigious awards.

Stream The Journey for the Giant Jelly Bean

What? You had no idea there was an album titled The Journey for the Giant Jelly Bean coming out? Well, it’s out now, and you can stream it. Jarebear is the new namesake for Jared from Zoltars and the Infinites…two powerhouse Austin acts; he’s taken the time over the last decade or so to craft an album of garage rock hits for both kids and their parents. The premise of the record relies upon the search for a giant jelly bean that will save the world; each song is like a perfect chapter in the grander story. You’ll have to stream it below to figure out what happens in the end. Congrats Jared!

Pretty Rad Holy Wave Tune

There’s something about the new developments in the Holy Wave world that have piqued my interest; they’ve stepped slightly outside the realm of psychedelia to capture a broader sound, particularly on this new single. The first several minutes of the track do harken to the core genre, though they’ve included these brighter notes, just the faintest hint of Stereolab perhaps ebbing through. Then, the vocals enter the picture, with two seemingly contrasting vocal pieces, playing to each other; it’s a nod to dreamier bedroom pop, though with a larger sound one can’t escape. It’s like some weird sandwich that encapsulates everything in the current musical climate; I love it. Check the band’s Adult Fear LP on March 30th via Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Premiere: Sour Notes Cover Patti Smith

The Sour Notes just recently released their latest album, Darkest Sour, but they’re not stopping there. Encouraged by participation in various “hoot nites” in Austin, the band have recorded a full album worth of covers titled This Is Not Our Music. Today, we happy bring you their cover of “Gloria” by Patti Smith (well, it was by THEM, but they’re doing the Patti Smith rendition). Jared does a great job with his performance, pulling off the natural bravado of Smith in every delivered note. For me, the best thing is that it gives us a glimpse into the minds of the band. We all love to pigeonhole bands, tell them who their influences are, but here we have a band stepping out and saying, here’s what we love! I’m excited to hear some versions of Jawbreaker and Wire that they’ll have out soon enough!

Check the New Feverbones Track

Yesterday, the esteemed Austin Chronicle dropped a brand new track from Feverbones, and you can read their thoughts HERE. But, since we’re responsible for putting Dream Talk out into the world, it’s our obligation (and pleasure) to share the latest single with you. “Sight Inside” is a crunchy number, drawing influences from mathy-prog to folkier elements; I particularly dig the backing vocals in the tune. The album will hit stores and the digital platforms on April 13th. You can grab the pre-order HERE. They’ll also be playing a fine set over at the ATH vs SOTO Party this Sunday!

Premiere: Good Field Release Necessary Feeling Video

Last month, Austin’s Good Field released their third LP, Surface Tension, and we’re stoked to bring you the band’s brand new video for “Necessary Feeling.” Riffs ring out immediately, waiting for the drums to pound their way into the picture, as they do in this video. Singer Paul Price soon enters the picture, walking a line between croon and warble; he manages to pull in the reigns, stretching himself into the higher notes. The keyboard notes throughout provide some nice balance, polishing the rough edges ever so slightly to keep a certain pop sensibility. But, the song seems to come to a brief end just over 2.5 minutes, but give it a second, as the band comes back forcibly to leave their mark with one final punching run to the close.
