Show Preview: Merchandise and B-Boys @ the Sidewinder

I’ve been really looking forward to this show for awhile, as I’m wholly stuck on B-Boys new record, Dadism. The band have this old school punk vibe, though thrown into a world of odd structures and a sense of urgency…it’s like if Parquet Courts had gotten artier (and better). Plus, the headliner is Merchandise, who always put on a really great show, continuing to impress with their constantly changing vibe. Street Themes will also be going on early to kick off the night. Doors at 6:30 over at Sidewinder, so be there or risk missing out on one of the best shows coming in town this summer.

Sleep Good Is Back with a New Single

It’s been a few years since we last heard new music from Will Patterson’s project, Sleep Good. He’s back now with a brand new album titled Bohemian Grove, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear what he’s bringing. I love the bouncing piano lines that hit in the background, but the swelling wall of sound that spins around the chorus is pretty remarkable. His pedigree includes working with SoundTeam back in the day, but I suggest you also take a listen to Skyclimber just to refresh your ideas on his gifts. Look for the new LP later this year in August.

Big Bill Residency and Brand New Single

Our long time favorites, and ATH Records alumni, Big Bill are here to make sure that the month of June is as exciting as ever; they’re kicking off a residency at The Electric Church this very night! They’ll bring along their friends every Friday and provide you with an evening of great Austin music and, likely, sweaty fun.

In celebration of their residency, the band has just uploaded a brand new single (rumored to be on a forthcoming LP). I love the playful exuberance in the song, especially once they get things going with the shuffling guitar chords and rolling drums. This could be the hit dance crazeof the summer (I think most showgoers in Austin already have it down!). Come on out to the Electric Church tonight and be sure to buy the song from the band so they can go make you more hits!

She Sir Returns With New Album

Those of you that know of my appreciation for indiepop and the like will surely be aware of how much I adore Austin’s She Sir. Today we’re here with this brand new tune to announce the release of their new LP, Rival Island. Even if you’re not aware of the band, this is a great place to start, as the guitar work here is exactly what makes the band so special…sometimes it’s jangling, sometimes it’s circular, sometimes it’s dreamy. Russell’s voice sounds perfect behind it all (soft and understated), providing what continues to seem like effortless pop of the best sort. There are few, if any, that do it better than She Sir, so look for the new album from Shelflife on July 21st.

Show Pics: Tres Oui and Growl @ Hole in the Wall (5/25)

…with Blushing, too.

I am finally getting around to sharing some pics from our little party the other night at Hole in the Wall. I used to go there quite a bit way back in the day. I went on a few dates with a girl whose family lived there. I dared not go back for a decade after breaking up, just in case.

HitW also made for a great test of some new hardware. I have gone mirrorless with Sony. It is a brave new world.

Click through to see some photos from the night full of Blushing, Tres Oui and Growl with a few thoughts on both music and photography.

Monk Parker Announces Sophomore ALbum

Monk Parker‘s probably one of Austin’s best kept secrets, though I hope it doesn’t stay that way, especially after hearing this brand new single. It falls in the world where Clem Snide and Jeff Mangum end upwriting true Western ballads. The musical accompaniment is truly leaps and bounds above other like-minded acts, and there’s this fragility in Parker’s voice that fits perfectly into the genre of balladeers. I feel like this is one of those songs that will leave a mark on your soul, haunting you in the way only the best music can. Give it a listen, and stay tuned for Crown of Sparrows on August 4th via Grand Jury.

Brand New Basketball Shorts Summer Jam

That’s right, summer’s right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with our friends Basketball Shorts! The pop punkers have just announced a brand new 7″ for Spain’s Jarama Records, with this brand new anthem, aptly titled “This Summer.” For those that devoured the ATH released, Hot and Ready, you already know you’re going to get an energetic bit of pop music that will engrain itself in your brain. With only a few days left in the school year (for me anyways), seems like the perfect time to give you a listen to this hit.

Fresh A. Sinclair Jam

I’m really happy about all the success that’s been coming to A. Sinclair, as there are few bands who deserve the accolades more. The band just dropped this brand new tune for their label Dangerbird, which is part of the label’s monthly Microdose Series. Pressing play, you’ll hear a throbbing bass line, and a lot of great guitar work…sharp little stabs, notes ringing out in the distance. It’s honestly one of my favorite songs I’ve heard the group record, which says a lot, considering how long they’ve been at it (in some form or another). Need a good hit? Here you go friends.

ATH Presents Blushing, Tres Oui and Growl @ Hole in the Wall Tomorrow

From time to time we like to put together little rock n’ roll shows, and boy do we have an incredible one for you tomorrow night at Hole in the Wall. It just happens to feature some ATH Records bands breaking down the doors and throwing some great pop music in your faces. Blushing is one of our favorite new acts in town, so hopefully you’ve caught on to their dreamy stylings. Tres Oui, well, those guys are great…this is jangling Prefab Sprout at its best. Oh, and you didn’t hear Growl all over your local radio in April? Well, come see them! Doors are at 9..we’ll see you there!

Another New One from Leather Girls

While the recent singles indicate some solid diversity from Leather Girls forthcoming LP, this new jam finds the band in their sweet spot, hitting those psychedelic vibes. You’re immediately transported back in time, shimming about the coolest lounge you’ve found. I love how the group holds tight to a quick pace, almost leaving the song behind as the tune moves into a carefully mapped freakout. The band drop their self-titled LP next wee via Yippee Ki Yay.
