Skloss Announce The Pattern Speak

Austin/Glasgow duo SKLOSS have been making waves the last few years, releasing their Voices Travel Through EP in 2022; their buzz has led to the signing with Fuzz Club Records for their forthcoming LP. The video version sets the ominous tone with a dimly lit convenience store introducing the opening riff that builds before Karen enters the picture with wailing vocals over the top. Slowly, drums begin to thump while the guitar continues to reverberate. Everything smashes together and the two lock into a heavy groove, displaying the full force the duo bring to the table. David Israel Releases Diane Video

If you go way back, like six years back, our friend David Israel let us help him get The Year That Felt Like Two out into the world, and we were more than happy to be part of it! David has popped up today with a new single, and as devoted fans/friends, we had to send your way. If you’ve never heard David’s work, you’ll find yourself engrossed in the power of his voice, dark and stormy, yet shaded by his eternal kindness. His wordplay is also a rarity, working between pure poetry and the idiosyncrasies of outsider pop. Enjoy this new song, and if you’re in the Austin neck of the woods…there’s a show tonight at Hole in the Wall to celebrate the single!

Being Dead Share Dragons II Video

Having just released EELS, Austin’s Being Dead aren’t stopping with promoting the album, delivering another video of what I think is one of the strongest tracks on the record. It’s strange, but they’re offering up this beautiful simplicity, working with little more than a melodic strum and their vocal work; they’re intermingling vocal notes create such a striking sincerity that you can barely pull yourself away. This is the sort of magic they’ve always possessed, and what everyone in Austin has known about for years, so it’s great to see that this is growing beyond the confines of our fair city.

Matthew Squires Shares Song of a Cactus

If I had one complaint about Austin songwriter Matthew Squires it would be that he’s been too quiet as of late; he’s one of my favorites voices in the city, so I selfishly keep hoping for more. Alas we’re here to listen to this delightful new tune, which is the perfect bedroom pop gem, and a perfect place to get your Monday off to the right start. His distinctive vocal qualities continue to endear him to those of us looking for a wayward voice to guide us through life, though they might also recall D. Johnston comparisons. Listen carefully to the way the arrangements carefully build depth to the song, ultimately erupting when you get to the track’s end. Hope to hear more from Squires in the future!

Air Celebrate 25 Years of Moon Safari at Moody Amphitheater in Sublime Futuristic Fashion

Wednesday night at The Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Tx, iconic, electronic French duo Air brought the North American leg of the Moon Safari Tour to its finale. Playing for a capacity crowd, clearly carrying their deep admiration for the 1998, pioneering, electronic classic, Moon Safari, the French duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benot Dunckel accompanied by touring drummer Louis Delorme exceeded any expectations that this experience would be nothing less than sublime. Whalers Return with Love & Drugs

Our early days as a blog had lots of coverage of Austin act, Whalers, but as life goes on, folks get busy…though that doesn’t mean the band haven’t been sprinkling the odd show and track into the ether. But, today, they officially return with a smoldering bit of indie rock, and we’re stoked to hear from the group again. They set the song up carefully, letting a little guitar line dangle and dance around with the vocals; they add in a little textural ambiance, waiting for the drums to pick up the pace. From there, the tune picks up speed, much like one would expect from the narrative of the lyrics, when love and drugs take over a relationship; you’re caught up and swept away by the swagger and swing that drives you towards the end!

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Prep the Sketch LP

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch are one of my favorite acts in the Austin scene. They have this sweat dripping tenacity that reminds me of an early Jay Reatard, rushing through songs as if possessed by some supernatural punk spirit. The song below’s been bouncing around for a minute, capturing, as best you can, the live energy of the group. This tune pops up with the news that they’re announcing The Sketch, their new album, dropping on January 17th, perhaps as the first best record out of Austin that year. Plus, a fun fact is you can play 7 Degrees of ATH Records with the band, but perhaps only I’m in on that story. I’ll save it for another day, while you crank the volume up!

Levitation Interviews: Strange Lot

Levitation Festival kicks off on Thursday here in Austin with a great lineup of bands coming into town for shows going down all over downtown. It should be another good time to catch up with some old palls while hopping between venues near and around Red River. Quin Galavis Shares New Single

Songwriter Quin Galavis has been around the Austin scene for quite awhile now, and we’ve been fortunate to watch from the sidelines as his craft has transformed from his full band work to his more recent solo stuff…but boy are you in for a surprise on his new single. Naturally brooding, Quin exhibits the patience here that allows him to draw the maximum emotion from the listener; you can feel the tension has he carefully walks his voice along the guitar path. Percussive elements don’t even bother entering the fray until after the one minute mark, allowing tension to build and build, though it never fully unfurls before us. There’s some fleshing out of the tune courtesy of Annecy Liddell and some guy named Thor Harris. Define Your Time, Quin’s new album, will hit on Novebmer 20th, with lots of special details in the mix.

Pets Share Fixed Taunt

There were a few sprinkles of Austin act Pets that came to my attention (you can check them by clicking on the band’s hyperlink). But, with that being said, I didn’t expect the band to come out of the gate and rule like this new single does. They’re operating with this melodic dissonance, oftentimes working with this speediness that evolves into blissed out moments of an ethereal nature…particularly when the vocals seem to just hang in the air, almost lifelessly, before crashing back into the core of the song. If you’re driving around Austin, looking to find what rips, well, this is it. Crank it up and dig in. Hopefully there’s more real soon!
