ATX Spotlight: Fresh Nameless Frames

namelessI’m really digging the few short listens I’ve had to the forthcoming LP from Austin’s Nameless Frames; it’s a good blend of punk fueled by energetic tunes and anthemic vocals. The single below has this grit to it that initially covers up some of the pop sensibility lurking beneath, but as the track evolves, that element rises to the top, asking you to tap your toes as you play the song over and over again. The band is releasing their self-titled album this week via Super Secret Records, with a release celebration at End of an Ear on Sunday (2.20) at 6 PM. Enjoy.

My Evening with Low: A Show Review with Photos

LowI met up with Brian, our photographer just after 8 on Tuesday night, a little anxious and a little weary. Low, since the late 90s has been a consistent part of my listening experience, not to mention one that I’ve often had trouble explaining my fandom. But, if anything, I left the venue that night with an expression of gratitude, to the band and the many fans that filled the Parish; it was one of those musical encounters few will understand…but those that do will cherish.

Classic Indie Rock Vibes from Pleasant Grove

pleasantLast week, Austin’s Pleasant Grove released their new album, The Heart Contortionists, revealing a mature band with a well-seasoned sound. That’s the most sincere compliment I can offer, as these guys don’t sound like they’re rehashing anything at all…it even seems like they’ve improved upon things, bringing in light atmospheric touches to match the percussion and piano work that serves as a great backbone to the tune. Definitely feels like this is something that went drastically overlooked by us in the storm of a month that was January. Really enjoying this album, so give this tune a listen.

Here’s New Music from A Giant Dog

A Giant DogSabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen have made a huge name for themselves over the past year with Austin’s Sweet Spirit, but I’ll admit that I’ve always gravitated towards their other project, A Giant Dog a little bit more; it has more energy and edge to it, which is exactly what you get on our first taste of their new LP for Merge Records. Ellis leads the band on over a tinkling bit of piano and driving guitar rhythms. You can almost see Sabrina doing her thing as the leader of this rowdy pack…and this time she brings way more hooks. Have fun with this one folks; PILE hits on May 6th.

Show Preview: A Night with Low @ the Parish (2.9)

lowTwenty years on and Low are still making some of the most important tunes of the indie rock genre. Their evolution since I Could Live in Hope and Long Division up until last year’s drastically overlooked Ones & Sixes illustrates the work the group has done to build their own sound and stretch the limits of expectations. Luckily for all of us, the band will be playing the whole night on their own, so there’s no telling what treats we will be given by the band. Tickets from the Parish are still available HERE, and the doors will open up at 8 PM…so you can expect a long evening of the most glorious music, and still make it home in time for proper rest.

ATX Single: Sharks in the Deep End

unnamed (2)We have somehow failed in the past by not mentioning Austin band Sharks in the Deep End and their infectious pop tunes. Today I remedy this error by posting their new wave sounding tune called “Shadows in the Sunset”. I’m loving the heavy, driving bass line and the overall catchy feel to the song. Seriously, how could one not love this?

Sharks in the Deep End will release Killin’ Machine on April 16th

Introducing Austin’s Plantation Band

IMG_5535Over at ATH Records, we’ve been working hard to bring you lots of good stuff, but Mike and I felt like we needed to mix it up just a bit. Luckily, an email rolled in with a submission from Plantation Band, offering us a take on their version of country music. Growing up, Townes and Waylon filled my living room, so it seemed like a perfect way to venture into new territory…so as not to get stuck putting out the same LP over and over. I know very little about the band, only some blurred photos they sent our way with the album and its art. The album’s filled with soulful ballads and country stompers, so I wanted to introduce you to the group today. They’re debut LP will come your way this April, so get yourself ready for Austin’s newest country balladeers.

Austin Spotlight: Digging Ponyboy & the Horsegirls

12371228_1510195042641689_36094317467136186_oLiving in Austin, there’s tons of stuff to cover, and we’re really trying to make sure we get to as much of it as we can. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of my friends bands book shows with Ponyboy & the Horsegirls, so I had to go check out their tunes. Surprisingly, they’ve got a few tracks to offer you, and they’re all pretty great…just to give you a heads up. Their most recent tracks have a softer feeling, like the gentle Winter we’ve embraced this year. Still, they also have a more rambunctious power-pop gem called “Ides of May,” which I’m quite fond of today. So, I’ve included both below to entice you to follow your heart (and ears) and get behind the ATX group.

Austin Spotlight: Casual Strangers Go Instrumental

casInstrumental music can take on many forms, but often it undoes itself by forming repetitively and boring listeners…this is not what happens with the new single just released from Casual Strangers. While there’s a trip effect to the track, seemingly intentional if you look at the art work for their new album, there’s this electronic soulful vibe that’s quite successful. It reminds me of the early days of Air, when they were crafting these sultry bits of pop music. The Austin band will be releasing Pink Panther on February 26th, with a party the night before over at Sidewinder. Have fun folks.
