Show Preview: A Night with Low @ the Parish (2.9)

Twenty years on and Low are still making some of the most important tunes of the indie rock genre. Their evolution since I Could Live in Hope and Long Division up until last year’s drastically overlooked Ones & Sixes illustrates the work the group has done to build their own sound and stretch the limits of expectations. Luckily for all of us, the band will be playing the whole night on their own, so there’s no telling what treats we will be given by the band. Tickets from the Parish are still available HERE, and the doors will open up at 8 PM…so you can expect a long evening of the most glorious music, and still make it home in time for proper rest.

ATX Single: Sharks in the Deep End

We have somehow failed in the past by not mentioning Austin band Sharks in the Deep End and their infectious pop tunes. Today I remedy this error by posting their new wave sounding tune called “Shadows in the Sunset”. I’m loving the heavy, driving bass line and the overall catchy feel to the song. Seriously, how could one not love this?

Introducing Austin’s Plantation Band

Over at ATH Records, we’ve been working hard to bring you lots of good stuff, but Mike and I felt like we needed to mix it up just a bit. Luckily, an email rolled in with a submission from Plantation Band, offering us a take on their version of country music. Growing up, Townes and Waylon filled my living room, so it seemed like a perfect way to venture into new territory…so as not to get stuck putting out the same LP over and over. I know very little about the band, only some blurred photos they sent our way with the album and its art. The album’s filled with soulful ballads and country stompers, so I wanted to introduce you to the group today. They’re debut LP will come your way this April, so get yourself ready for Austin’s newest country balladeers.

Austin Spotlight: Digging Ponyboy & the Horsegirls

Living in Austin, there’s tons of stuff to cover, and we’re really trying to make sure we get to as much of it as we can. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of my friends bands book shows with Ponyboy & the Horsegirls, so I had to go check out their tunes. Surprisingly, they’ve got a few tracks to offer you, and they’re all pretty great…just to give you a heads up. Their most recent tracks have a softer feeling, like the gentle Winter we’ve embraced this year. Still, they also have a more rambunctious power-pop gem called “Ides of May,” which I’m quite fond of today. So, I’ve included both below to entice you to follow your heart (and ears) and get behind the ATX group.

Austin Spotlight: Casual Strangers Go Instrumental

Instrumental music can take on many forms, but often it undoes itself by forming repetitively and boring listeners…this is not what happens with the new single just released from Casual Strangers. While there’s a trip effect to the track, seemingly intentional if you look at the art work for their new album, there’s this electronic soulful vibe that’s quite successful. It reminds me of the early days of Air, when they were crafting these sultry bits of pop music. The Austin band will be releasing Pink Panther on February 26th, with a party the night before over at Sidewinder. Have fun folks.

Show Preview: Roses @ Barracuda – TONIGHT

It’s Thursday night ya’ll…and that means, at least this time of year, time for you to get out and see a really great local show. Now, admittedly, two of the ATH Records bands, Rose Selavy and Shivery Shakes, are playing, but I’m not just pulling the homer card here. I really really enjoyed the Roses set on NYE this year. At times they had this indiepop feel, other times I felt a Kurt Vile vibe, both which I dig. Also, Typical Girls are making the drive in to bring their dreamy pop tracks to the stage as well. It sounds like a perfect night for all you pop fans; Doors are at 9 PM.

Marrow Interview + Show Preview @ Lambert’s (1.31)

I caught up with the band’s Macie Stewartreal quick via email to chat about life, Chicago’s music scene and their continuing growth as a band. Opening for the band will be Sima Cunningham. Show Spotlight: X_X and Obnox @ Barracuda (TONIGHT!)

If you call yourself a fan of punk rock, modern or old school, you either end up at this show over at Barracuda or you’re a fraud. For starters, the night kicks off with local rockers Marriage and Coma in Algiers…no slouch in their own right. But, you get a touch of history with X_X, a band fronted by John D Morton (the electric eels). This guy’s been making real rock n’ roll for so long, it’s hard to ignore. And, the drummer for X_X is one of my favorite rockers Lamont Thomas, who will also be bringing along his band Obnox. You think Ty Segall is prolific? You haven’t heard Lamont.

Tickets are only 10 bucks and the Doors are at 9 PM. Come get your rock on!

Stream Summer Salt’s Going Native EP

We’re putting this Going Native EP out with the wonderful lads of Summer Salt. I don’t want to say too much on it because I honestly think the music, and the band’s live set speak for themselves. I promise you…in the next few months, if not the next few years, people will be talking about these dudes as one of the best in town. They celebrate with a release show at End of an Ear on Friday at 6 PM…or they also have a house show the following night that you can read about HERE.
