Another Charmer from the Goon Sax

This Goon Sax tune dropped on the Internet yesterday, but I was working at the real job and such, so wasn’t able to get to it quite yet…until this morning! Admittedly, it’s one of my favorite tunes off of their new LP, so I had extra encouragement. I love how the track opens up with vocals working over a percussive loop and quiet piano chords. Then it switches, with an acoustic guitar strum accompanying the male vocals; I wasn’t completely sold, however, until drummer Riley joins the vocal fray for a powerful verse. The youthful attachment was shed for me on this song, as it showed me a great maturity I might not even have been expecting. We’re Not Talking drops on September 14th via Wichita Recordings/Chapter Music.

Cool Sounds Share Cool Sounds

I’ve been into the work of Cool Sounds for just a bit, and with the announcement of a new LP on the horizon, lets get back on it. The opening minute and a half is a little more subtle than before, perhaps drawing inspiration from a more classic rock guitar sound, maybe even a fine slice of country. Still, the Melbourne outfit are a pop outfit, so they’re not turning their back on that sound, letting the tension build up until a funky little jam delivers pop sensibility to keep you all in check. Cactus Country will be out on October 26th via Osborne Again.

Striking Opus from Rabbit Island

Admittedly, when I stumbled upon the music of Rabbit Island, I knew very little of Amber Fresh and her project. But, with her forthcoming album, she seems to have struck a cord within me that’s not easily ignored. For instance, this track has this emotive organ as the key musical element; I, oddly, don’t even think it needs much more than that. Amber operates between spoken word and half-hearted song throughout, and its her dedication to musical patience that draws you further into the depths of the song. Deep In the Big is going to take me on a magical journey, and I couldn’t be happier about it; it drops this week via Bedroom Suck Records.

New Video from Moonlover

I wrote about Moonlover earlier this year as Quang Dinh was readying his album, Thou Shall Be Free…and now I wanted to share this video for the album’s “Wedding Day.” At times, it feels as if you’re approaching some beach front property in an arid climate, but the solemnity in Dinh’s voice also seems to lend itself to heartache…operating on the dynamic between dark and light. The video offers that same contrast, with black images moving upon lighter backgrounds. If the song piques your interest, then be sure to go grab the album HERE.

Terry Release New Single and Video

Hats off to RSTB for sharing this new Terry gem off the band’s forthcoming I’m Terry album. In contrast to the spritely bounce of their first single, “The Whip,” their new single offers a calming dosage of pop. Oddly, the rhythm section holds a similar style, but the pace and the presentation of the vocals give the song a softer underbelly. The closing moments do bring in some brash discord, illustrating that the band aren’t bound to stylistic chains of any one genre. They’ll be releasing the new record via Upset the Rhythm on August 31st.

Lovely Pop Tune from Gregor

The Australian music scene is more than just those bright ringing guitars, so today we’ll turn our attention to the beautiful croon of Gregor. He’s preparing to release his debut album, and he’s shared this subtle number; it’s little more than voice, bass groove and a wash of keyboard sounds. It feels like a late night walk through a brightly lit street, capturing elements of darkness and light all at once; it’s pretty intoxicating upon repeat listens. The chorus barely steps out of line with the song, but you’ll notice a slight tonal change that only adds to the emotive power. Silver Drop is being released on October 5th via Chapter Music.

A Rocking Number From Relative Ways

It’s Monday morning, it’s hot as hell, and it’s time to kick off the week with a little rock n roll to take the edge off. Today my rock music is coming from Aussie Matt Finnemore and his relatively new project known as Relative Ways. For sharing today is his new single “This World” which features several elements of the 90s grunge rock movement combined with a somewhat brighter sound of modern day rock bands like Wavves or Surfer Blood. I love the edge and grit shown by the vocals and the music from Matt.

Relative Ways will release new album Alaska on August 10th.

Pinch Points Drop Debut EP

Recently stumbled across this brand new Pinch Points EP, and its stuck with me ever since. The Melbourne based four piece plays that sort of proto-punk that has you stuck between a solid bedroom pogo and a circle pit. The whole EP is sharp as nails, with standout “Jellybrain” sure to have you coming back to the band for more. Plus, there’s a slight political undercurrent, though not overdone, so you can go merrily on your way without grasping at the message, if you so choose. The Mechanical Injury EP is available now, and streaming below!

Downer Pop from Mope City

The name Mope City alone suggests the down-trodden, and I bet the band doesn’t mind that one bit. In the guitar sounds, you have a sort of laid-back grunge to it, though dropped in tone so that it seems to merely crawl through your speakers. You’ll find the vocals steady and solemn, with little intonation…that’s until the Amaya lends her voice to the track. It’s that slight little touch that elevates the tune into the realm of pop sensibility. This song will appear on the Aussie act’s News From Home, which will drop this October via Tenth Court.

Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton Return

It’s only been a few months since the debut from Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton, but they must have enjoyed the partnership quite a bit, as they already have a second record waiting for you. This picks up right where one would expect, though Lachlan takes the lead here on this number; he’s got this warm delivery that I always find intoxicating. Emma adds her voice to the chorus, proving the perfect accompaniment. I love how these two just sit in this homeostatic pop wonder world, not pushing anything to the extremes, only holding on to their pop penmanship. Keep on Trying is out on July 18th via Osborne Again Music.
