Winter Share Final Single from What Kind of Blue Are You

There’s been a lot of great records this year, but I get the sneaking suspicion that I’m going to spend a lot of time with What Kind of Blue Are You. As I said last time, each single is operating in the same orbit as the others, but each offers a different musical twist on left of the dial pop. This one drifts casually, relying upon Samira’s voice to slowly pull the listener into the song, then suddenly the beat drops in taking the song on this sort of trippy pop ride that operates like a sort of pop dreamscape. There’s a little of this, a little of that, and all of it, from the guests to the vibes, has been pretty special. Winter release their new album on October 14th via Bar/None Records, and hit the road with Peel Dream Magazine through the Fall.

Winter Announces New EP

Having just dropped an EP in April, I was surprised to hear that Winter had another EP in the works for early December via Bar/None Records; I was not, however, surprised by how great a first single they’ve shared. I love how Samira’s songs always toy with the boundaries of shoegaze, though never quite dropping that distortion pedal on full blast, instead harnessing the polish of pop. My favorite bit came right at the 40 second mark where her voice starts to hit higher notes, calmly hanging in the air and adding to the ethereal quality. If the Hazy EP is as great as this song, we’ll all be in for a treat; it drops on December 6th.

Justus Proffit Shares Hole

You’re going to hear a lot of Elliott Smith comparisons with the new Justus Proffit single, and I suppose that’s fair, as the song definitely recalls Smith’s later work whilst living in LA, Proffit’s hometown. Still, while the song’s structure and usage of melody is definitely on point, there are some sounds that illustrate a songwriter carving his own path. Something about the guitar sound seems a bit more psychedelic, showing off a willingness to explore the negative space in his songs with sonic adjustments; he’s coming into his own, and it sounds glorious. LAs Got Me Down comes out on March 8th via BarNone Records.

Welcome to the Party The Paranoid Style

unnamedElizabeth Nelson is a songwriter who works under the band name The Paranoid Style. While Nelson earned some underground critical praise last year, she is ready to explode on the scene with her debut LP Rolling Disclosure. To preview her upcoming album, one can check out this debut single “Common Emergencies” from her debut. I’m strongly reminded by Jenny Lewis here with the distorted guitar and take no prisoners vocal style. That’s definitely a good thing.

Rolling Disclosure will drop on July 15th via Bar/None Records.
