Will Johnson Has a New Band

Surely you’re aware of my undying love for all things Will Johnson, be it his solo work or Centro-Matic, but now he’s founded Marie/Lepanto with Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster of Water Liars. Johnson’s voice is clearly a standout on the band’s first single, quivering slightly with his distinctive tones. This tune’s also a bit heavier than the work we’ve heard from Johnson of late, which could be due to Kinkel-Schuster, but regardless, the melodic elements unfurl beneath the crunchy guitar work. The duo will release Tenkiller on January 26th via Fat Possum imprint, Big Legal Mess.

Brand New Ballad from Justin Peter Kinkel-Shuster

I know it may not seem like it down here in Texas, but there’s winter just around the corner, ready for the perfect fireplace listening experiences. I think I’ll end up having a lot of this JPKS spinning during those fireside chats with my old lady, as it already seems built for such times. Kindle-Shuster’s vocals are perfect, but I love the intimacy of his playing style; it almost sits back in the mix, allowing the world around your speakers to fill in what space remains in the ether. You don’t want to sleep on Constant Stranger, which is being released by Big Legal Mess on September 30th.

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster Goes Solo

Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster has made a name for himself over the last several years as the primary songwriter, singer, and guitar player for indie rock band Water Liars. With all of his success as part of a band, Kinkel-Schuser has decided to step out on his own for a bit and take a shot at recording and performing as a solo musician. The first taste of his new material was offered up yesterday with this new single “Headed South”. It’s downright beautiful and features a sort of melancholic, yet sill somehow bright take on the songwriter genre.
