It’s really a bummer that Blood left Austin for Philadelphia, but at least they’re still dropping great tunes like they’ve always done. They’ve slimmed down to a four-piece, and whether that’s impacted the sound as a whole, it does feel like its tightened the ship a little bit, and even maybe subconsciously tying it back to their Austin days. For me, its like a discordant Spoon, maybe a Britt Daniels/Mineral mash-up. There’s definitely a push for a nice vocal grab, but the song revels in its ability to sound tight and ramshackle all at once. It’ll be interesting to see where they’re heading now that they’ve signed with Ramp Local, but you can be sure I’ll keep you posted.

If your one of the seven people that hit up our site regularly (thanks mom!), then you might notice a title change. Nothing big, but just dropped a word because I was tired of pretending to be too clever. I’m not. Alas, we are still out here covering as much music as we have time for, and still trying to figure out how to incorporate the TMZ style drama that makes the cool sites so popular. So, for me, last week had some highlights I was pretty stoked upon; I got to hear solid returns from Lust for Youth and Jackie Mendoza, not to mention another brilliant electropop goodie from Das Kope. We got the announcement of new Julian Never, Galore and Blue Lawyer LPs, which should make everyone in the Bay Area proud. Plus there’s a great show preview/review from J.Wags on Golden Dawn Arkestra, so be sure to check out his work!

Blood Return with Self Improvement Single

After delivering their rad Bye Bye EP, former Austin outfit Blood return with this rad new single to satiate your needs. This tune plays upon the group’s ability to reign in the cacophony of feuding noise and bringing it to a driving center, flirting with just the barest hint of melody. Like the song, the video encompasses the frantic nature, with images and clips overlapping and growing on your screen, matching the musical eruptions spewing forth from the group’s amps. Clearly their move to Philly is paying off as the band now have the backing of Fire Talk on their new single; hard work pays off kids.

So much good music last week, and so much to cover. Well, we tried to get up as much as we could, plus Brian got some great photos of Good Morning and Packs. Here’s our weekly musical recap, with lots of awesome news, like new releases from Tan Cologne, Field Guides…and Voxtrot! I think the news of their Early Music compilation definitely made my week, even as I was held hostage in my classroom by state testing. Enjoy some jams from last week.

Blood Share Luck Single

Formerly of Austin, now of Philadelphia, Blood are making music that seems destined to be overlooked, but highly revered by those in the know. They almost aim to turn you off at the get-go, with a stuttering guitar line followed by a squawking saxophone; the horn sets the tone for the rhythm section to slink into the track, wiggling its way beneath that funky guitar line. When the vocals hit, you’re visiting this heavy realm that’s reminiscent of Ought’s early work, when things rang out, but seemed discordant. Through it all, there’s an almost meditative nature to it, something that begs full immersion to really maximize your enjoyment; few bands are making track as compelling as this. Their Bye Bye 10″ is out June 3rd via Permanent Creeps.

Been a hot minute since we compiled all our weekly jams into one nice little playlist for you, but here we are again, wrapping up last week on a Monday. We’ve got tons of great jams in store, with some of the latest releases also featured. Austin gets some love, with singles/videos from Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Queen Serene and Blood (kind of/sort of). Blood Drop Brand New Single

Sadly, Blood is the band that Austin let get away (I blame Austin for that, but I’ll save my diatribe on Austin being basic-bitch indie rock for another day!). This is about the -now- Philadelphia outfit and their brand new single, which dropped a few days ago. Built atop a rolling drumbeat and these anxiety-inducing riffs, the song moves in and out of itself, slithering here and there. Frantic and emphatic, it opens up into this beautifully dreamy pop moment, offering up a mid-song ballad, albeit for a brief period of time before squirming in its seat all over again. This is why the band was always so fascinating, as they seemed indifferent to the rules and expectations…so good to see they’re still at it! They release their new Bye Bye EP on June 3rd.

Austin’s a fairly insulated city when it comes to the music scene. Sure, you’ve got your Spoon and The Black Pumas…and they deserve their due, but there are acts that might not ever make it out of the city, at least as far as the “media” is concerned. One act that we’ve all had our eyes on, hoping for larger exposure, is Blood, who just released their Why Wait Till ’55 We Might Not Even Be Alive EP; it’s a four song collection of undefinable shapeshifting rock n’ roll that sprawls over 20 minutes. In the confines of these four tunes you’ll find little droplets of hardcore and post rock, from Shellac to Cursive, yet done with enough pop panache that it’ll draw in fans of Shame, Black Midi and Fontaines DC. What a way to introduce yourselves to the world.

A Night At Free Week 2020

Nathan went out Thursday, I went out Saturday. We both got a dose of ATH Records goodness.

For me, catching Big Bill for the last time in their current form was of paramount importance. Sure there were several other great lineups, but drummer Alan Lauer is leaving our fine city. His wife is, too, and she makes amazing cookies so they brought cookies and they were delicious. The jams flowed. It ended up being a packed, raucous set with local celebs, plenty of shenanigans like jumping jacks, praying to the Hotel IndiGod and a pit during “What do you want on your salad?”…

Along for the ride was Exercise, Borzoi, Blood and Son of Stan. I also said hi to some folks next door at Mohawk. Click through for the big gallery…

New Heavy Pop Track from Bloody Knives

There’s a lot less blood on the hands of Bloody Knives than one would expect, if you were going by their name and the title of their most recent album Blood.  That being said, it’s sort of irrelevant because the music they’re making is pretty incredible, and you can grab that record from Saint Marie Records.  As a kid who grew up with his fair share of angst, there’s a darkness captured in the song itself, but the combination of shoegaze elements transforms the song itself, giving it a metallic sheen to coat its pop attributes.  Totally enjoying this one.
