That New Massage Tune

If you happen to be into the same style of jams as us, you’re likely to know there’s only a handful of sites covering some of these genres regularly, which is where this tune first popped up yesterday. Massage has former members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, which to me shines through; you can imagine some of these tunes showing up as acoustic demos in the band’s practice space, taking notes from 80s UK indiepop (and some other nostalgic notes). Of course, we wouldn’t love a good slow burn if it didn’t feature delicate little touches of ringing in your ears rock n’ roll, placed delicately throughout so as to walk that tightrope between traditional pop and blends of shoegaze. Heavy hitter labels Mt. St. Mtn./Tear Jerk Records/Bobo Integral will help get Still Life out into the world on June 25th.

Quivers Announce Golden Doubt

I was all in on Quivers when they dropped We’ll Go Riding on the Hearses, so of course I have high expectations for their forthcoming Golden Doubt LP! I’m sure they’ll hate hearing this but the first 2 minutes or this so sounds like classic Grant-led Go-Betweens, using a casual vocal pacing from Sam, and incredible backing harmonies from Holly and Bella…needless to say, I was slow-tapping my toes and enjoying myself. But, as a fan of 10-20 second moments of pop magic, the musical interlude around 1:40 was a nice additional touch, setting me up for the body-tingling pop eruption at 2:30! Group harmonizing never sounded so sweet, and the churning jangles and overall brightness guarantee we’ll all need a copy of the new album; it drops on June 11th via Bobo Integral/Spunk/BaDaBing!

Tim Cohen Shares One Last Single from You Are Still Here

We’re just a few weeks away from the release of Tim Cohen‘s new album, You Are Still Here, and with that, there’s one final single to entice you to rid yourself of a few dollars. What I love from my listens so far is the simplicity and confidence in what Tim’s doing with this record. This jam is just this quick stomping riff, with emphatic lyrical delivery from Cohen that matches every note; the clarity on his voice really illustrates that growing trust in his pipes. There’s also this cool middling section to break the song in half, which I was totally digging (almost hoping he flipped in entire second song inside this one). Have a listen, and grab You Are Still Here from Bobo Integral.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share Rose Tinted Glass

We’re only a few weeks away from the release of Songs from Another Life, so the Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness have tossed us one final single to entice your ears. If you haven’t already heard the crisp pop rock sounds the band have to offer, then please, indulge us by clicking play below. Just imagine Teenage Fanclub peeling off their masks Scooby Doo style to reveal an even poppier version of themselves; this is what you get back. The pacing and vocals are pretty spot on comparison, but there’s this lightness that comes with the Boys presentation, something in the riffs just feels a bit more airy. Plus, they’re dropping the new LP via Bobo Integral on February 5th, and you know we love the label, so its a win-win!

Another New Tim Cohen Tune

I’m really surprised at how indifferent folks are to the new stuff from Tim Cohen, particularly considering how much everyone loves Fresh and Onlys. There’s a real steadiness to the verses on this tune, which you’d expect from Tim’s songwriting. But, I think the growth comes in that chorus; there’s this spirited pop bloom, emphasized by jagged guitar chords, horns and female accompaniment. Still, he kind of dwells in that mysticism mode, allowing the track to sort of brood then fade out in this hazy mantra that ends the tune succinctly. You Are Still Here is out on March 26th via Bobo Integral.

Another Track from the Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness

Before we left for our little holiday break, we shared several tunes from the forthcoming LP from The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness. But, over that little break, the band shared another great pop tune, so as we’re easing back into full-on work mode, I figured I’d share this bouncing gem with you. This tune is the perfect blast of power pop goodness, toying with an acoustic intro before dropping in a joyous blast of fuzz that echoes throughout the last bits of the song. I think for me, my only complaint here is that the song’s too short! I could listen to this all day! Luckily, Songs from Another Life is only a month away; grab it from Bobo Integral!

That New Tim Cohen Tune from You Are Still Here

Well, this Tim Cohen tune came out yesterday, but our attention was turned to our Catenary Wires/Heavenly, etc takeover, so we didn’t get a chance to praise the tune, until now! It’s been really interesting watching the Fresh and Only’s front man weave his way in and out of his solo career. This tune has this certain slow-burn to it, like a candle flickering in a dark carpeted room, perhaps for sance purposes. For me, aside from this voice, I think my favorite thing is that he seems to have completely erased the sound I associate with him, almost presenting me with something brand new…like a Cohen protg, with just a little more pain in the voice. You Are Still Here will drop on March 26th via Bobo Integral.

Stream Pop Filter’s New LP, Donkey Gully Road

Not more than a handful of months ago, we were treated to the debut LP by Pop Filter, a group largely made up of the songwriters from the Ocean Party; it was a glorious visit from old friends; they also took some time out to share a Rock n’ Recipes with us. Those old friends were able to get back together and write an entire new album, which they sort of dropped out of nowhere today. They chose not to offer singles, celebrating the release as its own standalone story, and in that, we all get the joy of listening to the whole thing together! Right now, I’m stuck on “Tree Change” as my favorite, but I reckon that’s because I’m in a sad bastard sort of Thursday. Love this group so much. Donkey Gully Road is now available via Bobo Integral.

Fixtures Share Jay’s Riff

All those cool kid year end lists are out, but there’s still great music to be had in 2020; the new Weak Automatic EP from Brooklyn’s Fixtures is one such release that’s landed on my radar for this Friday. This short new ditty before Friday’s release should tip the scale in the band’s favor; it employs a nice little riff that rocks right through, on the corner of Jangle Street and Fuzz Road. Still, the band have some playful little harmonies working through their jams that maximize the endearing quality they bring to the musical table. You might even find just a hint of a toe tap in there too. Weak Automatic is out Friday via Bobo Integral.

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share Falling Through

Not only do I love the colorful artwork, but every sound I’ve heard from the new Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness LP just rings dear and near to my heart. The riffs hang just on the right side between heavy and jangling, ringing with more force where necessary. Each melody seems focused on maximizing the emotional pull with the listener…and I say that as I try to hide the huge grin across my face. If you took the best of the late Teenies work and combined it with the melodic sensibility of the Lucksmiths, you’d pretty much be spot on with that comparison…but lets be real…this duo is definitely coming into their own! Songs from Another Life drops on February 5th via Bobo Integral.
