Say Hello to Tiberius

Tiberius is a band hailing from Boston, who despite their NE location, create this sort of twangy style of Americana drenched indie rock. This track, “Sitting,” will serve as a perfect introduction as it gives off hints of early Centro-Matic with real reverby vocals akin to say Jim James. It’s a lovely track filled with some truly beautiful moments locked within. Dig it.

This track is part of a new full length entitled Troubadour, which was released a couple weeks ago. You can check out some purchase options via bandcamp.

Tiberius Release Felt Single

As they gear up for the release of their new record, Troubadour, I thought I’d check in on Boston’s Tiberius. Their latest single has me returning to some of my earliest roots in the indie world, as I can hear some sonic similarities in Brendan Wright’s voice; there’s a distinctive delivery and pseudo-drawl that is reminiscent of Clem Snide/Eef Barzelay, and I’m not mad at it. Musically, they’re working in this territory where Americana grabs a bit more weight, taking a genre and giving it a little bite, capturing the genre’s ability to rock in the live setting and putting that to tape. If you’re digging it, Troubadour is out on November 10th via Audio Antihero.

Premiere: MK Naomi Revive the Emo Vibes

Our past emo selves continue to emerge here in the ATH offices as many new bands keep hitting us with those past life vibes. For many of us, myself included, those mid-west days never truly left and I am loving the emergence of new groups like Boston’s MK Naomi who not only carry the torch, yet evolve and grow the sound. New single “Wasserland,” as example, certainly has a Rainer Maria, pop emo feeling, but also adds in these lovely vocal harmonies and tight drum fills to create something fresh. Keep these coming!

Say hi to MK Naomi on IG or pre-order their new EP Dream Hiss on bandcamp. It’s out on June 20th and comes in a fancy purple cassette version!

Tiffy Shares Mirror Single

Was looking for something a little fuzzy and a little catchy, so glad that I stumbled into this new jam from Boston’s Tiffy. I loved the jagged riffs that worked right into a bait-and-switch, puling back to let the verse open up with a bit more sweetness. There’s a bit of crunchiness, making it just rock n’ roll enough for the cool kids to whet their appetite, though it certainly swirls about in this twister of pop sensibility. Plus, everyone deserves bonus points when they just smash down the back half of the tune with walls of joy and noise! Tiffy will drop the 2 EP on August 2nd.

Otis Shanty Share Why Do I Care + Announce Up on the Hill

If you’re looking for a new act to tie to your ship, might we encourage you to check in with Boston’s Otis Shanty. The group are set to release their debut album this September, having dropped an EP this past year, and already you can tell how much they’ve grown here. Beginning with this angelic guitar line that seems to fall from the skies, the track quickly moves into offer up the sprawling vocal work of Sadye Bobbette; things seem fairly safe here, but the group throws in some little flares from time to time, illustrating their willingness to mix in various flavors. You’ll hear that in the chorus, blossoming, but then it moves into a sharper drum beat that employs fast cymbal snaps to give the rhythmic push that accelerates the song’s pace. Twist and turn, and back again, you’ll be mesmerized at the freshness amidst the familiarity. Up on the Hill is out September 20th via Relief Map Records.

Choo Choo la Rouge Announce the Sunshine State

Choo Choo la Rouge isn’t a band that I’m altogether familiar with, though I think I’ll aim to rectify that now that I’m indulging in their fresh single…as I hope you do. Through and through, this is a pop ballad, though strung together with a rolling percussive stomp and a nice acoustic strum. To me, it doesn’t feel too far off from what you might expect from a Jeff Tweedy solo outing, the strum and vocals pushed way out front in charming fashion, while an electronic piano gets to have its say in the absent moments sprinkled throughout. Give this track a listen; The Sunshine State is out April 5th via Kiam Records.

New Single From House of Harm

Boston based House of Harm create a unique, sort of gothic pop music touching on the darkness of bands like The Cure, but with hints of a twee pop brightness to make things brighter. All that to say, you should check out this new single “Two Kinds” if that sort of sound peaks your interest. I think you’ll find that it is a jam.

This track appears on the new House of Harm album due out December 1st, Pre-orders are live for that one now.

Stream A New LP From Bedroom Eyes

While you’re looking for more tunes to enjoy this weekend, might I suggest this new, 9 song, full length album from Boston based group Bedroom Eyes. Having honed their craft for over 10 years now, new album Turned Away, shows a band leaning heavily into the noise of shoegaze with driving bass lines and rapidly paced drum beats. This is well worth a weekend listen. If you’re into it, consider a purchase over on bandcamp for either streaming or physical consumption.

Go Check Out Medical Maps

Over the last few years I’ve given up on the grind of trying to keep up with the Joneses, in terms of staying on top of the coolest of the cool; I mean, we’re all here Pheobe Bridgers B-sides anyways. So, I keep going back to bands who have quietly released beautiful bits of pop like Medical Maps. I’ve had lots of little mental asides when trying to describe the band’s sound; they sound like the Atlantic Ocean’s answer to the Bay Area scene, albeit with a hint of late 90s slowcore, like Bedhead, with perhaps a sprinkle of that same period’s emo flare. If you’re mesmerized here, as I was, then might you consider checking out their album That is That, which just dropped?!

Fine Release Love Death Dreams and the Sleep Between

Did you know there was a Boston in the UK? I reckon that makes sense since we stole most of the colonial establishments. But, it also happens to be the home of pop songwriting duo Fine, who’ve just dropped another 19 tracks of brilliant tunes, courtesy of the super fine folks over at Subjangle. There’s not a single track over 4 minutes so its easily consumed, so don’t be afraid of the daunting number of tunes; I kept going back to “Sleep,” as it has that gentle jangle and a rolling beat that kind of pushes the song’s pace a bit. It’s hard to really pigeonhole their sound, but I like to think of it as aged Death Cab/Belle and Sebastian fans opening up their Sarah Records collection for inspiration. Anyways, stream it below!
